We visited santa yesterday and my 2 year old DD told 'her' - yes a female santa!- quite clearly that she wanted a pink bike.

We have 2 younger DSs and so opted for the red and yellow trike from the well known toy store as it would be a 'more sensible' hand me down sort of colour!(DP has very old fashioned ideas on gender stereotyping of colours and wouldn't like to see DSs with anything pink, quite funny actually as 18 month old DS1's favourite toy of the moment is older sister's talking mirror that says 'don't you just love being a princess!)

Now i'm feeling quilty, should we return it and get the colour she asked for?

Awww, but she wants a pink one! I'd take it back and get her the pink one, I wouldn't be able to resist. If you can't pass it down, you could always sell on ebay or whatever. She really wants the PINK one!

DD1 has Pat Butcher taste. We're talking seriously naffo, on the same scale as Dubai for gaudy.

I prefer Pottery Barn and Cath Kidston or Laura Ashley and zen.

I bought her a rucksack for school that is beyond tacky - hot pink Disney Princesses.

I almost need sunglasses.

But SHE loves it. And it's about her and her using it, not me.

Yes, a bike is a bike to a grown-up - but she's 2 and she wants a PINK bike. If you had been given a bike to give to her and it was red & yellow and you couldn't afford to buy a different one then fair enough, but if you have the option to get her a pink one for no extra cost I think it would be nice if you did and she would be so happy.

YANBU - get her a pink helmet and some of those pink tassels to go on the handlebars and she will be thrilled.

btw - 3 DC's under 3! that must be hard work!

God i'd not even thought of a helmet!I dont suppose she'll be going very fast but it is quite a way to fall onto a hard surface and it starts her in good habits!

Thanks for that, what an irresponsible, mean parent i'm turning out to be!

I hate gender stereotyping, pink is for girls type nonsense. Your DP is being a bit unreasonable there.

I would also say if you plan to hand her things on to her younger brothers, will her preference always be compromised when they are chosen?

I would swap it for a pink one. DS1 had a red and black bike which DS2 is learning to ride on. He can also go on DD's pink one if he wants. It is only a colour..

I'd stick with the red one.

You could look into getting her a babyseat for the back to put her dollies. Or can you get some peel off stickers so you princess it up now and peel them off ready for the boys ?

Well, I never gave a rat's arse or a second's attention to all this 'gender stereotyping' bollocks.

But the elder girl loves pink and the younger one is getting the tool set and stethescope she wants for Xmas.

If it makes 'em happy, hey, I figure, I'm going to have far bigger battles with them in the future than a fucking colour

If she was 3 or 4 I'd have gotten her the pink one- xmas is for kids and I'm sure you could fork out for a trike in a different colour for the next DC next year- some are only £11 on Argos website.

But I don't think she'll be scarred at 2 so do whatever you like, she'll be so excited by the magicalness of it all, she won't care it's snot green or dog poo brown with rust sprinkles.

But they don't HAVE to get an extra one in a different colour - that's just the OP's DH not liking the idea of a boy on a pink bike, which is ridiculous. Should she also have to wear boys' clothes so they can be passed down??? I think she should have a nice gift that is for HER to enjoy and is what she wants.

If she had asked for a pink hand bag and she got a black and red bike, then that is one thing, but to know she really wants a pink bike and she gets a red/black one will be much more disappointing and she will not be happy with Father Christmas.

Some men c an be such planks about this sort of thing.

I wouldn't swap it. Of course is nice to get exactly what you want for Xmas, but she's 2, she'll get over it in about 5 seconds.

Dd loves her Thomas scooter that used to be ds1's. She only got a new pink princess one for her 4th birthday as she wanted a 2 wheeler one. But she actually uses the 3 wheeled blue Thomas one a lot more.
I'd get the pink one. The younger 2 will cope fine with a pink bike.

Besides unless it's a bloody exprensive Puky one or such like it'll have fallen apart well before the youndest ds gets his hands on it.

If I had the money (and knew I?d still will have the money in a year or so?s time to buy new blue bikes when they were needed) I might not be able to help myself and I?d be very tempted to get the pink bike?..however, if there was any chance that when the sons wanted bike we?d be a bit skint, I?d get a unisex one now.

p.s 3 under 3?s???.make sure there is a very good treat under the tree for yourself!

the only reason she won't get the pink one is because her husband doesn't like the idea of one of the boys on a pink bike.
