Never seen it on MN until a few months ago. And now it's everywhere!

OP posts:
Rhubarb · 26/11/2009 16:59

Don't be so narcissistic!

diddl · 26/11/2009 17:00

Think it´s a pretty close call with "toxic" tbh

OrmIrian · 26/11/2009 17:00

And doesn't it mean selfish?

OP posts:
cyteen · 26/11/2009 17:00

It's all about you and your opinions, isn't it Orm?

OrmIrian · 26/11/2009 17:01

Naturally.

OP posts:
Morloth · 26/11/2009 17:01

I hope not, because I can't spell it.

bibbitybobbityhat · 26/11/2009 17:01

Yanbu.

GibbonInARibbon · 26/11/2009 17:05

I too have noticed and added it to my MN Buzzword Bingo card.

DanDruff · 26/11/2009 17:05

lol at cyteen

BecauseImWorthIt · 26/11/2009 17:08

... but very helpful. I've just been able to help a friend work out why her relationship with her mother is so non-existent because of reading about NPD on MN.

mumblechum · 26/11/2009 17:15

No one's allowed to be imperfect any more, they're all narcissistic/abusive/toxic.

Sigh.

Someone's been reading too many cod psychology books imo, and needs to get over themselves.

No one in particular, there just seems to be a real weedy department in MN at the moment. Maybe they should have their own section, "Whining about people and sticking daft labels on them"

Then I could exclude that bit.

mumblechum · 26/11/2009 17:17

That probably makes me toxic.

Hassled · 26/11/2009 17:20

Some people are just wankers. That's the only label that need apply.

GibbonInARibbon · 26/11/2009 17:21

rofl "Whining about people and sticking daft labels on them"

Pixie, Orm is not a troll. She is a much loved and sensible member of the MN massive.

Big at much loved and sensible.

I'm much loved and sensible I am....

And of course mumblechum is a most discerning and intelligent judge of character

OP posts:
Bonsoir · 26/11/2009 18:59

I agree. What's wrong with selfish or self-centred? That's what we used to call what we now call narcissistic behaviour...

OrmIrian · 26/11/2009 19:21

I wonder if it's because it makes the narcisstic person feel better about being a tosser

OP posts:
NanaNina · 26/11/2009 19:28

I agree. I had never heard of narcissistic personality disorder before MN but now I see it quite regularly on posts. Often when someone complains about someone else, it is suggested that they may be suffering from PND! Incredible.

VengefulKitty · 26/11/2009 19:46

I am narcissistic because I take photos of myself and post them on FB

I am shocked that some had never heard of it before - were none of you ever taught about Narcissus in Primary school? The guy who was so obsessed with looking at his reflection in the water that he fell in?

But yes, it is when someone over estimates their abilities and looks

Janos · 26/11/2009 19:49

I think you should just thank fuck you have never had to deal with these people.

Who are any of you to sneer at someone who is dealing with a difficult situation to those that are trying to help?

OrmIrian · 26/11/2009 20:34

Oh janos! Don't be so defensive. Some of us are dealing with all kinds of things that don't have a clever name. It just seems a new definition for something that presumably people had to deal with for many many years.

And you have to admit that there are many posts on here that use NPD all of a sudden, when the real word is 'self-centred'.

OP posts:
ArizonaBarker · 26/11/2009 20:39

I would very much doubt that the majority of people diagnosed on here as having NPD actually have it. It's a buzz word that's taken over from toxic and passive/agressive.

But it's comforting to give things labels.
