Never seen it on MN until a few months ago. And now it's everywhere!

suddenly everyone on mn is a psychiatrist with a lexicon of terms and ICD-10. the online diagnosis is the scariest (and sometimes funniest too)

BitOfFun · 27/11/2009 19:59

Great- I will read that without wine this week, thanks.

JaceyBee · 27/11/2009 20:29

gettingagrip - you make an interesting point about ME/CFS. Certainly as little as 5 years ago many dr's thought it was bullshit. Would you be able to provide a link to any studies about abnormal brain functioning in PD, I would be interested to read it? I'm guessing it would have something to do with the synapse pathways necessary to feel empathy not being formed properly due to childhood neglect/abuse?

I wasn't actually saying that I don't personally believe in them, I actually do. I have a very good friend with Borderline PD.

And FWIW, I really don't think Orm meant to be offensive to you and others who have had experience of this, but it sounds like you have had a horrible time and I am sorry for that.

mathanxiety · 27/11/2009 20:48

OrmIrian, maybe you have a different definition of the term "buzzword" (in your OP) than others, including me. To me it comes across as rather derogatory, and some posters here seem to have also taken it as a derogatory term, an invitation to laugh at the concept of personality disorders or NPD, something a good few posters here obviously know nothing about.

Scottishmummy, every thread on MN urges posters and readers to be aware that nobody may be assumed to have any professional knowledge of anything they post about. I assume everyone on certain threads is aware that MN is useful as a sounding board or a reality check but no substitute for a professional diagnosis. Good information and advice and even a diagnoses are not to be found solely in the doctor's office or from the HV or anyone else with professional qualifications, though. There are threads about all kinds of issues, from breastfeeding to rose pruning, and all and sundry chip in with different ideas and contributions of varying relevance. Who knows what someone posting or lurking may find useful or relevant to their circumstances? Glad you find the posts where someone is going through hell with their life partner and looking for advice funny, though

OrmIrian · 27/11/2009 20:51

No Jacey, I didn't mean to offend those genuinely affected by this.

SIL has ME. It is most definitely a terrible debilitating condition. It has changed her life beyond recognition, and that of my DB and their DC.

IMO someone saying their parent/partner/friend has NPD without diagnosis because they display some of the characteristics, is the same as saying they have ME because they area wee bit tired.

Fine math. Have it your way.

Shivvering · 27/11/2009 20:53

No idea wtf this threadhas turned to but leave OrmIrian. Always been okay. Must be others if there is a problem.

It's way too long to read.

It is everywhere (narcisssssiiiiim), has been for well, a while.

mathanxiety · 27/11/2009 20:55

Am now thinking of a new thread -- AIBU to think that posters who can dish it but can't take it are being U?

OrmIrian · 27/11/2009 20:58

math - I wasn't dishing anything. But as I said earlier I think I've become a Aunt Sally.

DO you really read the OP as saying the narcissism dooesn't exist?

OP posts:
OrmIrian · 27/11/2009 21:00

Oh and if you think that comments about my dad were acceptable then you are clearly not on the same planet as most people.

OP posts:
Janos · 27/11/2009 21:03

I do see what you're getting at OrmIrian and I'm really sorry you were upset.

(An aside but please can people remember there is a person on the other side of the keyboard before launching into personal attacks ?)

I think what people are are reacting strongly to some of the other comments made - not yours - which really were rude and ignorant.

mathanxiety · 27/11/2009 21:07

OK Orm, I have now read all your threads. And now more than ever, I find your flippancy offensive. I didn't say you think NPD doesn't exist. What I said was that you think it's a subject worthy of mockery and invited others to laugh at it with you. And I was right.

Shivvering · 27/11/2009 21:10

flippany offensive = look we are all bloddy different people, you really need to start getting used to that.

OrmIrian · 27/11/2009 21:10

You've read all my threads? Well done.

If you come to that conclusion then you must think very differently to me. I said that the term was overused on MN. WHat others chose to do is up to them.

And you think the comment about my father was acceptable do you?

OP posts:
Shivvering · 27/11/2009 21:10

bloody not gobbildishite.

Besom · 27/11/2009 21:11

Orm - the same thing had occured to me simply because I work in mental health (not on the medical side) with lots of people with diagnosed personality disorders, but have not come across npd. I was wondering how come everyone and their uncle on MN seems to know someone with it.

However, I am prepared to accept that it may be that people don't come into contact with services to the same extent as other pds.

I have no doubt that people suffer at the hands of those with these personality traits. I don't think the OP was mocking anybody.

Online diagnosis may help some people, but equally might be extremely unhelpful in some circumstances.

A bit of caution needs to be applied, I feel.

OrmIrian · 27/11/2009 21:13

"bloody not gobbildishite."

Eh? thanks for you support shivering . But ...????

OP posts:
OrmIrian · 27/11/2009 21:14

besom - no I wasn't mocking. Thankyou.

OP posts:
Shivvering · 27/11/2009 21:15

Just leave it OI. Not worth the stress. Turn it off. Go watch I'm a Celebrity. My thoughts are with your father and family.

Don't let them make you cry, they are other ppl at the other side of keyboard and yes they have feelings but some ppl thrive on this shitty type of thread.

Shivvering · 27/11/2009 21:16

Oh just ignore me. few too many ... No but seriously I like you, I know you. I am slightly bonkers anyway without the alcohol.

mathanxiety · 27/11/2009 21:17

'Posts' here on this thread, OrmIrian, sorry for the wrong word. I haven't read all your threads.

What comment about your father are you referring to?

"the current MN buzzword" (your OP) is a dismissive phrase.

Flippancy is offensive if you've wasted years with a narcissistic abuser, Shivvering. Just as offensive as flippancy about a term like date rape, which is also a relatively new concept.

PerArduaAdNauseum · 27/11/2009 21:19

Just chucking in a tuppence-worth for Orm. Yes, There is sometimes a tendency on MN to over-diagnose unpleasant behaviour. But no-one's denying that NPD exists, any more than they'd deny that DV/DA exists. Or that Emotional Abuse - whatever the cause - is copletely unacceptable and the victim should run fast and far.

But maybe it's got too heated and should be pulled?

There are people on MN who have suffered at the hands of Ns. Maybe it's time for a new support thread. Maggie - gwan - set one up again?

OrmIrian · 27/11/2009 21:20

math - it is only offensive if you think I am referring to NPD as a buzzword. I am in fact referring to it's overuse on MN as a 'buzzword'.

And if you had read all my posts I'm sure you would have seen the mention of my dad's op as a fit subject for mockery.

OP posts:
OrmIrian · 27/11/2009 21:23

perardua - I suspect you are right. It needs to be flushed. As what I actually posted (which was only a very few inoffensive words) has been misinterpreted and inflated.
