Can you take cocaine socially without it becoming a problem?

whattodonow1 · 09/11/2009 10:15

Father of my 3 children has admitted to me that he has been taking cocaine approximately once a month when on nights out with friends pretty much ever since we got together. Says he spends about £30 a month on it. I trust what he has told me as he is basically decided to put his cards on the table as he doesn't want to lie to me anymore. He knows I'm not into this type of scene and have never been involved in anything like this.

Basically he says he is not ready to give his habit up but hope one day to be in position to do so. I am pleased that he is finally be honest with me with a view that if he told me that he would never touch it again, he'd be lying as he knows that one day he will take it again. He doesn't see it as a big issue as he has been doing it for years and can on some occassions go for a few months without taking anything.

Basically want to know has anyone been in the situation where they or a partner has taken this drug and then grown out of it (partners 29 and most his friends are young with no responsibilities) In a dilema whether to run and struggle with 3 kids on my own or try to ignore this and hope evntually it goes away

Just to add - I think illegal drugs are much the same as legal ones. Lots of people have the odd glass of wine, sometimes even get very drunk, and never become alcoholics. Some people can happily be 'social' smokers for years and never migrate to 20 a day. Hell, I can leave a box of chocolates sitting in my kitchen for weeks on end and I know a lot of people couldn't last a night without scoffing the lot!

I know that some things are more addictive than others but there is a lot of the individual that you have to factor into the equation too.

CitizenPrecious · 09/11/2009 20:35

ere, the OP still hasn't been back-

is it appropriate to do the face yet??

Oblomov · 09/11/2009 20:37

Nothing like a coke question to get people over-exagerating.
People saying, oh i bet its not £30. every user underestimates their usage.
How do you know that? thats quite an asumption.
oh , if he's using more than once a year, its so easy to become addicted.
Well, yes. possibly. for someone who has addictive qualities, other areas of their life in turmoil, etc etc. yes, possibly. not for everyone, you know.
It is possible to enjoy coke, once or twice a year. go out plenty and not ever think about taking it. I know plenty of people who do that.

My only concern with OP, and look, quelle surprise, she hasn't come back, is that he has been doing this since they got together. they have 3 kids, so they have been together ages. and this neer occured to you ? you never noticed ? this is very very odd. either he is very secretive , or you are very unaware or .......
seems like this has all come as a bit of a shock. now that is odd.
Like someone saying, I have been an alcoholic for the last 15 years and you never noticed. very odd.

whattodonow1 - To answer your question, yes, people can and many do take cocaine socially, without it "becoming a problem". Using it once a month is very infrequent indeed, and does not sound like a nasty habit to break your family over, to be honest.

fairycake123 · 09/11/2009 20:54

Given that the average wrap of "coke" is actually comprised mainly Bold and ground up paracetamol, I don't think there are going to be any addiction issues. I genuinely think that for most people it's the ritual and the naughtiness that appeals, as opposed to any chemical effects. Personally I think spending money on coke is stupid, but it wouldn't bother me if DP wanted to do it once a month or so.

jasper · 09/11/2009 21:50

EMSIE, the tooth in a glass of coca cola thing is a myth.

The coke on steak ? I have no idea, but if it is true it is neither trite nor pointless

groundhogs · 10/11/2009 18:04

My DH told me about the Coke on a steak - he saw it... He was shocked and would never, ever touch it.

It's how Colombians demonstrate what a stupid thing Coke is to actually do.

Whatever it takes to express how much of a total prick anyone has to be to stick that shit up your nose is never, ever pointless.

EdgarAllenPoo · 10/11/2009 18:24

can you take coke without becoming addicted? - yes.

whether you consider it blase or not, this a fact borne out by the experience of many on this thread. many people take Coke and never suffer any more ill effect than they would from a night on the tiles.

is it an appropriate thing for the father of your three kids to be doing?

  • up to you, i would have some qualms personally.

is it ok he has lied to you for this long?
No!

really OP, you have to wonder why he hasn't mentioned this in so long.

also, lets not confuse the effects of the illegality of coke with the drug itself. Also much coke these days is produced in labs from things such as lanacane (one ester different chemically) so does not involve Colombia, or at least, no more than the production of the pharmaceutical does.

I would be upset by his blatant "lying by omission". What else is he not telling you?

I would also be very doubtful if he is only spending £30 per month on it aswell.

catinthehat2 · 10/11/2009 18:45

Fairtrade coke

Intersting article in Sunday's Observer about a third drug being created by the body when mixing cocaine and alcohol. Suggested as a possible reason for premature deaths

CoteDAzur · 10/11/2009 19:40

"coke on a steak"

You people are completely clueless if you think dabbing some coke on steak will rot it. Loads of people rub cocaine into their gums over a period of hours. And yet, they still have gums the next day, would you believe I have done this in the past, quite a few times, and what do you know, my gums are also intact.

This story sounds like Chinese whispers where someone down the line heard about leaving meat overnight in Coca Cola*, and thought they were talking about cocaine. It was a common school experiment 20-25 years ago.

pacinofan · 10/11/2009 19:40

In short, no, you can't. Using coke and parenting is a big no-no, your other half needs help, and fast.

Have taken coke frequently - not an addict. Have gums, have nostrils, have a life.

It's been while but only I haven't been in a situation where it is offered / available. I will most likely take it again.

Before you divorce him and enter him in rehab I'm curious about why he's telling you now.

CitizenPrecious · 10/11/2009 20:26

tsk. I thought I would try the coke-on-a-steak experiment for myself to settle the matter once and for all, so this morning I nipped out to see our friendly neighbourhood dealer, and popped to the butcher's to get the steak. I left them both in the kitchen and went back out for the school run.

Imagine my horror when I got home later to find that dp had trousered the coke, the dog had eaten the steak and they had both gone down the pub.

Needless to say they will come home to find their stuff in the garden and the locks changed.

Oblomov · 10/11/2009 20:30

ROAR at precious. best you join second and bullet at divorce and rehab then. ha ha.

CitizenPrecious · 10/11/2009 20:56

just a thought groundhogs- if they use the old coke-on-a-steak demonstration to show Colombians why they shouldn't do coke, it's not all that effective, now, is it?

and thesecondcoming I don't come across you all that often, but when I do I can't help but picture you getting into a fancy car with nice shoes on while flicking the vs at a passer by. am I close?

...ooh sorry. seem to have gone emoticon kerrr-azy there

meltedchocolate · 10/11/2009 21:03
