to think that Brazilian waxes are NOT the norm. Or am I deluded?

Article in the Times basically saying that it is an expectation nowadays that women will have Brazillians.

women.timesonline.co.uk/tol/life_and_style/women/relationships/article6893826.ece

Is this the case nowadays? I have never had a wax job down below and have no intention of. Sod that!

Particularly at this quote: "There is something hugely irritating about being forced to conform to an aesthetic ideal instigated and perpetuated by the porn industry, but...it is now expected. If your boyfriend has been conditioned to expect a tidy Brazilian, he may genuinely find anything else very off-putting".

Really? Or in actually still having pubic hair am I the modern equivalent of the wild woman of Borneo?

peedoff Ive seen a man shaved.... some men do it too because they think it's neater. and i also have a male friend who confessed to me he was "trimming" his in the same way as he waxes his chest..
now im early 30s and i dont shave, only do the edges when i can be bothered (last time would have been in may before going on hols!).
i shaved once and my DP was horrified!

gagamama · 02/11/2009 11:49

I Nair it all off once a month or so.. styling it into any kind of shape is too much hassle, plus it's cleaner and feels so much more sensitive during sexy time. Within a week it looks obviously post-pubescent again so it's not a huge deal.

wheresmypaddle · 02/11/2009 12:18

Wish I could pluck (ha ha) up courage to have a wax -get my eyebrows done but too much of a chicken to get bikini line done. Have visions of me running out half done and being all lobsided.

However, I don't want it done to improve my sex life but because I am a 'hairy person' and don't feel comfortable with 'bits' showing past my underwear or even worse my swimwear. Wouldn't want the lot off though but would love to be a bit less bushy!!

To deamylady- I trim (trying to avoid TMI but there seems to be no limit to the length that I could achive if I didn't). I find if you do big even cuts it causes itching but if you 'chop' onto it a little after trimming its not all so uniform in length and feels much better. Hope that makes sense!!

elsiepiddock · 02/11/2009 13:03

I had mt first Brazilian just before a holiday a couple of years ago - I went in for a normal wax and the beautician persuaded me to give it a go.

I am a complete convert and I can't imagine ever going back to a full bush. It feels so nice and clean. My dh loves it too and no, he's not a paedohile or a pervert.

I have to say that it is becoming the norm. I see loads of women every day at the gym and the vast majority of them have brazilians. The only ones sporting the full bush are the older ladies!

fumanchu · 02/11/2009 13:12

Agree with tatt. Its a personal choice, but hygiene has nothing to do with it if you shower/bathe regularly! I bet all those in favour of brazilians would moan like mad if they were forced to shave before childbirth as used to be the case! Read The Female Eunuch by Germain Greer - why would an adult woman want to look like a little girl? Are all men going to end up like John Ruskin and faint at the sight of pubic hair?

I don't think I have noticed anyone fully "bare" at the gym (not that I make a habit of looking!). Everything from the aforementioned lightening bolt look to fully furry, but no-one without anything, mostly made up of yummy mummies.

I am only 32, surely I am not an older lady yet? Am I?! (I can live with older, lady might present a few difficulties).

Meandacat · 02/11/2009 13:21

I discussion along these lines with a male friend about a year ago prompted a straw poll amongst him and his mates (all in their 30s). Outcome: out of four guys, one liked things completely clean, one liked a landing strip, one said he didn't mind "as long as it was under control" and one liked things as nature intended.

Can't comment on any younglings but I do sometimes wonder women's bodies are becoming further and further removed from reality. Are men really that squeamish?

mrshibbins · 02/11/2009 13:22

I regularly go the full monty as a treat for OH and myself on special occasions. It just feeeels nice for both of us and means that i get a LOT of love action

mrshibbins · 02/11/2009 13:23

by the way i'm in my 40s

dreamylady · 02/11/2009 13:23

thanks for the topiary tip where'smypaddle
if i can manage a fringe on my DD should be able to cope with this

KnottyLocks · 02/11/2009 13:25

Haven't gone full monty - the thought of my c-section scar grinning at incoming DH too funny.

nickytwotimes · 02/11/2009 13:29

I think it's gross tbh.

Little girls are bare. Women are meant to have hair. Fair enough, tidy it up if you like, but getting the lot off is yet more pornification of mainstream culture.

And wtf is sexy about having hair in one of the most sensitive parts of your body yanked out by the roots? Or ingrown hairs? Or skin infections? Nice.

mummee09v · 02/11/2009 13:46

hiya, i have been having brazilians for a few years now!!!

it hurts the first few times but as the hairs get weaker and groww back thinner it seems to hurt less each time.

before that i used to shave it with a trimmer pretty much bare anyway, have been doing that since my mid teens.

i dont care if men prefer it or not - none of my boyfriends have ever really mentioned it or expressed a preference - but I prefer it.

joannaspanner74 · 02/11/2009 13:54

who'd have thought this would generate such strong and opposing views.
short answer. consensus is that any trimming/waxing/shaving makes things more sensitive downstairs and therefore more pleasurable...that has to be a good thing, no?
I would not go in for full waxing business myself on grounds of expense/upkeep/embarassment, but nothing wrong with a bit of a trim & tidy up leaving whatever length/style you feel happy with.
personally not got a lot of time for these things but a prune every few weeks seems to help in lots of ways!

MABS · 02/11/2009 14:02

loads of women at my gym with all off, not that i've done a survey tho just quite evident as people queue for showers.

FanjolinaJolie · 02/11/2009 14:03

To those of you who do opt for the Brazilian or Hollywood options do you have problems with ingrown hairs etc how do you avoid this?

Morloth · 02/11/2009 14:04

Alright now I am starting to wonder if it has something to do with where you live?

SexyDomesticatedDad · 02/11/2009 14:37

Isn't the sensitive bit on the inside - or have I been doing it wrong all these years????

I know my stubble grows quite quickly and the plucked chicken look doesn't do it for me.

tatt · 02/11/2009 14:44

Olifin - read it in context. I was brought up on what consenting adults do in the privacy of their own home was their choice. So whatever turns you on, as long as you aren't trying to belittle anyone behaving differently.

seaglass · 02/11/2009 14:50

The only times I've been bare down there is when I've had c/sections - 1st time, the nurse did it, 2nd and 3rd, I did it myself - horrible - looked like a plucked chicked - yuck!
My dh once shaved everything off - I think he was going through some sort of kinky phase, but there was nothing sexy about it, it just looked like a long nosed old man

Olifin · 02/11/2009 15:17

Fanjolina One can avoid the ingrowing hairs by exfoliating and moisturising the area. You can add a wee drop of tea tree oil to your moisturiser which helps avoid ingrowing hairs and soreness.

SexyDomesticatedDad Yes and No. The outside bits are quite sensitive too and much more so when hairfree, IME.

benjysmum · 02/11/2009 15:18

I don't think this is about the pornification (is that even a word?) of anyone or anything. In some cultures (esp in warmer climates) bare down there is the norm for men and women for hygiene reasons (hence the name Brazillian).

I think women should decide what they want and not be condemned as trying to look like little girls, contributing to pornification (?) of anything or indeed have their partners told they're paedos.

Depends (cubicles) - many gyms don't. And most swimming pools do, but a lot of women still just change in the general bench area. Doesn't bother me - (I think that when people mention what they've seen we are talking glimpsed not actively observed!)

Must say did feel a little odd though when I went bathing in japan once. And yep, I felt hairy - they aren't particularly.
