To be wound up by primary school kids wearing shag bands

I work in a high school and we had Y5 primary school kids visiting for transition today. Lots of them had shag bands on. These have been banned from our school, and I'm sure most of the younger kids don't know what they represent, but it still goes through me to see them being worn.New here, be gentle!

See, racism I can deal with effectively and calmly.
I definitely feel more uncomfortable dealing with sex, which I know is a reflection on me more than anything else.
I'm finding it hard to come to terms with the loss of innocence, tbh, particularly with regard to sex, although I know it is, of course, inevitable. I just didn't expect she would be so young

Agree though, that it's fantastic to debate with intelligence and grace

we used to wear them, but the colours didn't have meanings, and we did call them shag bands. We just used to give each other them as a sign of friendship.

Blimey. Original poster here. Only wandered off for a medicinal beverage and to watch the telly for a bit and find myself being accused of colluding with the Daily Mail. For future reference I'd rather extract matchsticks from my own excrement than read that particular publication. This was my first post here - looking forward to more!

Rattus, I was more idly speculating than accusing you. But if there was some kind of MN bingo you could now scratch out the 'in league with the Daily Mail' square.

I have not, as yet, been called a loon. I may try for that as a sign of MN experience.

Looking forward to more debate in the future. Off now to shout random wrong answers at Jeremy Paxman.
