My daughter is fixated with The Little Mermaid and Tinkerbell. I have just been listening to her sing along with Ariel to the song "a part of their world". Whenever she signs along to this ot the song at the end of tinkerbell I always get a lump in my throat becuase she sounds so cute and yet so grown up. I am also a softy for many of the songs listed in this thread and the slightest thing can set me off. My favourite song ever is "Season in the Sun". Don't know who sings it though. Any Ideas.

Don't forget the 2nd verse of "Summertime" by George & Ira Gershwin, Heyward DuBose.

Summertime
And the living is easy,
Fish are jumping
And the cotton is high.
Oh your Daddy's rich
And your ma is good looking
So hush, little baby,
Don't you cry.

One of these mornings,
You're gonna rise up singing
Then you'll spread your wings
And you'll take to the sky.
But till that morning,
There's ain't nothing can harm you
With your Daddy and Mummy
Standing by.

My Last Breath by Evanescence

Hold on to me, love
You know I can't stay long
All I wanted to say was
I love you and I'm not afraid, oh

Can you hear me?
Can you feel me in your arms?

Holding my last breath
Safe inside myself
Are all my thoughts of you
Sweet raptured light, it ends here tonight

I'll miss the winter
A world of fragile things
Look for me in the white forest
Hiding in a hollow tree
(Come and find me)

I know you hear me
I can taste it in your tears

Holding my last breath
Safe inside myself
Are all my thoughts of you
Sweet raptured light, it ends here tonight

Closing your eyes to disappear
You pray your dreams will leave you here
But still you wake and know the truth
No one's there

Say goodnight
Don't be afraid
Calling me, calling me
As you fade to black

Holding my last breath
(Say goodnight)
Safe inside myself
(Don't be afraid)
Are all my thoughts of you
(Calling me, calling me)
Sweet raptured light, it ends here tonight

Holding my last breath
Safe inside myself
Are all my thoughts of you
Sweet raptured light, it ends here tonight
Holding my last breath

Makes me cry every time.

'sob'

Can I add 'I hope you dance' please ?

I hope you never lose your sense of wonder
You get your fill to eat, but always keep that hunger
May you never take one single breath for granted
God forbid love ever leave you empty handed

Chorus: I hope you still feel small when you stand beside the ocean
Whenever one door closes I hope one more opens
Promise me that you'll give faith a fighting chance
and when you get the choice to sit it out or dance,
I hope you dance, I hope you dance

I hope you never fear those mountains in the distance
Never settle for the path of least resistance
Livin? might mean takin? chances, but they're worth takin?
Lovin? might be a mistake but it's worth makin?
Don't let some hell bent heart leave you bitter
When you come close to selling out, reconsider
Give the heavens above more than just a passing glance

And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance,
I hope you dance (time is a wheel in constant motion always)
I hope you dance (rolling us along)
I hope you dance (tell me who wants to look back on their years and wonder)
I hope you dance (where those years have gone)

I hope you still feel small when you stand beside the ocean,
Whenever one door closes I hope one more opens,
Promise me that you'll give faith a fighting chance,
And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance,

I hope you dance.

I always thought Puff the Magic Dragon was about drugs?

MrFlibble · 10/09/2009 17:15

I thought I was doing well reading through this thread and not succumbing to the tears, but then I got to the bit where someone had posted the poem from four weddings and I cracked!

One song that gets me going is Heaven is a Halfpipe, my ex-boyf died in his sleep when he was 19 and we played this at his wake.
If I die before I wake
At least in Heaven I can skate
'Cos right now on earth
I can?t do jack
Without the man up on my back.

Its very hard to listen to.

abbierhodes · 10/09/2009 17:15

Can I add 'the Dance' by Garth Brooks, and a song called 'Honey'...I can't remember who.Hang on, I'll google.

madameDefarge · 10/09/2009 17:32

does it make me crazy to cry whenever I hear the cbeebies goodnight song? Mind you, its been a few years, ds being 9 now, but always got me going.

mumof2teenboys · 10/09/2009 17:43

MrFlibble

I was fine until the poem ,was trying to read it to my son and got very emotional

I love Heaven is a Halfpipe, my eldest son said that he wants it played at his funeral. So sorry for your loss, I can't think of words now.

prettyponies · 10/09/2009 17:50

Now, don't any of you read The Velveteen Rabbit, will you....

Ponders · 10/09/2009 17:52

Oh not Honey, abbie (it was Bobby Goldsboro btw) - that was practically Seasons in the Sun mawkish to me

"and a small cloud passes overhead & cries upon the flowerbed that Honey loved"

(sorry)

pranma · 10/09/2009 17:53

I hardly dare admit it but Danny Boy moves me to tears
Oh and Leonard Cohen's Hey thats no way to say Goodbye[wish I could find the words
And reading 'no matter What'by Deddi Gilori to dgc because I know that I am not really likely to see them grow up and the last line,'Love, like starlight, never dies'is so beautiful.

hocuspontas · 10/09/2009 17:57

'One day when I was not at home,
while she was there and all alone
the angels came....'

WAAAAAAAH

pranma · 10/09/2009 17:57

Does anyone remember an ad for Kodak film years ago which included a song called 'Turn Around'?part of it was,'Turn around and she's growing, turn around and she's grown
Turn around and she's a young wife with a child of her own'again I wish I knew all of it.It was around when my dc were very small and now dd is indeed 'a young wife with a child of her own'[2 in fact].Where did all the years go?

Ponders · 10/09/2009 18:02

Apart from that, I am also a sucker for Two Little Boys & Puff, but only since having children - could sing them quite happily before that, can't even start them now.

Who knew Two Little Boys was written in America in 1902? I thought Rolf wrote it!

Ponders · 10/09/2009 18:05

Just for you, pranma

goblincandoa5k · 10/09/2009 18:20

Can i suggest Terry Jacks 'Seasons in the sun' I weep buckets when i hear this song

Goodbye to you
My trusted friend

We've known each other since we were nine or te
Together we've climbed hills and trees

Learned of love and A-B-C's

Skinned our hearts and skinned our knees.
Goodbye
My friend
It's hard to die
When all the birds are singing in the sky;
Now that the spring is in the air

Pretty girls are ev'rywhere
Think of me and I'll be there.

We had joy
We had fun

We had seasons in the sun;
But the hills that we climbed
Were just seasons out of time.

Goodbye
Papa
Please pray for me
I was the black sheep of the family;
You tried to teach me right from wrong

Too much wine and too much song

Wonder how I got along.
Goodbye
Papa
It's hard to die
When all the birds are singing in the sky;
Now that the spring is in the air

Little children ev'rywhere
When you'll see them
I'll be there.

We had joy
We had fun

We had seasons in the sun;
But the wine and the song
Like the seasons have all gone.

Goodbye
Michelle
My little one

You gave me love and helped me find the sun;
And ev'ry time that I was down
You would always come around
And get my feet back on the ground.
Goodbye
Michelle
It's hard to die

When all the birds are singing in the sky;

Now that the spring is in the air
With the flowers ev'rywhere;
I wish that we could both be there.

We had lives
We had fun

We had seasons in the sun;
But the stars we could reach
Were just star-fish on the beach.

madameDefarge · 10/09/2009 18:28

oh goblin, my childhood self wept buckets when that was in the charts

SoniaL · 10/09/2009 18:32

Sobs uncontrollably. That is the most beautiful song in the world.

angrypixie · 10/09/2009 18:49

Pranma The link to the kodak ad is here

Snivel & Enjoy x

weegiemum · 10/09/2009 18:55

Silly enough, I also get choked up by Lock Lomond:

"you take the high road and I'll take the low road,
and I'll be in Scotland afore ye
For me and my true love will never meet again,
On the bonnie, bonnie banks of Loch Lomond"

  • all about a soldier dying in war an only coming back in his coffin.

Or WB Yeats poem (which was set to music) "Down by the Salley Gardens"

Oh no don't get me started on folk music! Its all tragic!!!

fruitstick · 10/09/2009 18:59

weegie I had no idea that was what it was about

oh heck

LedodgyDailyMailstinksofpoo · 10/09/2009 19:05

this gets me everytime

LedodgyDailyMailstinksofpoo · 10/09/2009 19:08

Here are the lyrics.

Schoolbag in hand, she leaves home in the early morning
Waving goodbye with an absent-minded smile
I watch her go with a surge of that well-known sadness
And I have to sit down for a while
The feeling that I'm losing her forever
And without really entering her world
I'm glad whenever I can share her laughter
That funny little girl

Slipping through my fingers all the time
I try to capture every minute
The feeling in it
Slipping through my fingers all the time
Do I really see what's in her mind
Each time I think I'm close to knowing
She keeps on growing
Slipping through my fingers all the time

Sleep in our eyes, her and me at the breakfast table
Barely awake, I let precious time go by
Then when she's gone there's that odd melancholy feeling
And a sense of guilt I can't deny
What happened to the wonderful adventures
The places I had planned for us to go
(Slipping through my fingers all the time)
Well, some of that we did but most we didn't
And why I just don't know

Slipping through my fingers all the time
I try to capture every minute
The feeling in it
Slipping through my fingers all the time
Do I really see what's in her mind
Each time I think I'm close to knowing
She keeps on growing
Slipping through my fingers all the time

Sometimes I wish that I could freeze the picture
And save it from the funny tricks of time
Slipping through my fingers

Slipping through my fingers all the time

Schoolbag in hand she leaves home in the early morning
Waving goodbye with an absent-minded smile

fruitstick - what an amazing letter.

Two little boys gets me going too. Also that song from toy story 2, and baby of mine from Dumbo- my dad and I used to both cry over that when I was little.

I have the new(ish) Yusuf Islam album - a couple of the songs on that can set me off too!
