To think that health professionals should not call me MUM

DD had her jabs today and the nurse kept on calling me "Mum" even though I said to her that I did not want her to call me "Mum". I told her that it was a biological impossiblity that I was her mother.

I have two children and I am happy for me to call me Mum, but I do have a proper name and I think health professionals should use it.

No I agree calling you Mum isn't going to help you when your DC is seriously ill,but I have met many nurses who are as "unapproachable" as some doctors, that also doesn't help you feel any better.

Yes ofcourse, you want a HCP to act professioally and efficiently, but its very hard to just be like a proficient machine who cares for your DC,you care and you want the people you are dealing with to realise that. Its difficult to smile and "look caring".

Its better IMO if all HCP took the time to treat you with respect, but also try to banish the professional and "patient" barrier, with empathetic words, and phrases.

When I use the word "Mum" I am trying in a (basic) way to acknowledge your importance in the proceedings, not be too "official" and cold in my approach.

But like you say,the majority here feel its used differently.

I don't agree.

scottishmummy · 22/08/2009 20:27

AitchwonderswhoFruitCrumbleis · 22/08/2009 20:29
