to not understand why so many poor people...

1000 replies

nybom · 05/08/2009 09:22

...are being called "poor" if they can afford:

  • cigarettes/drugs
  • dogs
  • large amounts of takeaways/ready meals
  • ready cut fruit, brands, air freshners and other superfluous crap, kids drinks/other products specifically tailored to kids
  • to go out drinking
  • FF babies
  • to leave lights on, have electrical appliances on standby, not to use energy light bulbs, to keep the water running, to put on half a load of washing, to leave heating on at night
  • to maintain artificial nails, to have hair extensions
  • buy loads of beauty products
  • to leave their car engine on whilst going shopping/standing in a traffic jam
  • to have themed children's birthday parties with loads of props
  • and most of all: have CREDIT cards so they can overdraw

i'm talking of regular habits not just occasional behaviour...

several of my friends are on benefits, so the observations are firsthand and not just assumptions.

a friend of mine (single mum on benefits) got a party bus for her DSs last birthday party (besides loads of presents), this year he's getting a wii (and loads of other presents). WTF?

why don't these people simply save more?

i on the other hand spend less than 100 pounds on a family of four (whilst buying high quality, fresh, organic products) by buying 50% of my shopping reduced/offers, at local markets and a lot of things (like toiletries) from pound shops or discounters. we buy value toilet paper (amongst other things); and i go to the hairdresser twice a year, and only to the beautycian for special occasions such as weddings. the children don't get any toys or clothes from us, as there are enough family and friends who don't know what to buy for christmas/birthday parties. so the kids basically don't cost us anything. we have one credit card and we make sure NEVER to overdraw because of the high interest rates.

i simply don't get it...

Course there would Godzilla

But look frther along-

if all nurseries paid decent wages for valu of work done, then everyone else would see their bills rise skyhigh

If carers to the elderly were paid at a eate to reflect value fo work done, wold LA's be able to afford them? Would the LA's make cutbacks telsewhere or just offer it to less people?

It's inherent in our system that certain jobs are paid shite wages or it all collapses around our ears.

Whose role is most valuable- leisure assistant or SN 1-1? both jobs offered on our local council page today (leisure assistant seems to be reception thing)

So how come the leisure person is paid double?

Hmm cheryl- Roven has a Phd, a very can do attitude- and a very seriously disabled child who can't attend school all the time so does need her at home.

Attack someone else maybe but ffs.

!

PeachyLaPeche · 06/08/2009 16:48

It's not all about the attitude!

It's about the whole lot

riven's daughter cannot walk, talk, sit up unaided, prevent herself having multiple life endangering epileptic attacks. The attitude isn't the issue!

Riven herself has MS. Coping with that and caring for her DD is a massive achievement.

I've actually met them and can say that from experience not just what I have read on here.

As for me- you kno, thats just not how the world works. I ahve a decent enough attitude- garduated with a newborn baby and three other kids two autistic, not gene5rally a sign of laziness but I did miss school srop off the day I went into labour 9though not pickup) so am far from perfect I know

however becuase I am not willing to either sign the boys over to someone else or beat them regualrly in order to force socialServices to provide rspite and support, I am on an interminable waiting list.

C'est la vie.

GodzillasBumcheek · 06/08/2009 16:49

If the exclamation was about what i said expat, it's because the last comment of hers was totally ignorant and not called for

Apologies if it offended anyone else

expatinscotland · 06/08/2009 16:50

No,GB, it wasn't directed at you at all.

Riven, don't feed it! Rise above.

PeachyLaPeche · 06/08/2009 16:51

PMSL at the idea of ExP sending a ! to someone for swearing
