to enjoy wine every night?

barnsleybelle · 25/07/2009 17:49

Been to a football gala today with ds and got involved in a discussion about drinking.
I probably drink at least 2 glasses of wine every night. Sometimes half bottle sometimes full.
DH works away so my nights when dcs are in bed are my time. I look forward to my wine.
Anyway equal amounts of mums at the gala either agreed with me or were horrified.
What's the general opinion on here i wonder???

The liver of an obese non-drinker may be under just as much strain as that of a moderate drinker or even some more heavy drinkers.

Without knowing more about the OP's size, in particular, it's hard to say what the long-term impact on her health my be, if any.

Then again, any one of us can also walk in front of a bus tomorrow.

KingRolo · 26/07/2009 19:21

I've always enjoyed a glass of wine but can't imagine how anyone could possibly function properly the morning after a whole bottle. Any one who says they can must be kidding themselves.

I don't care about units and all the other toss the government come out with but there's no denying a whoe bottle of wine is a lot.

merr · 26/07/2009 19:23

I happily drink half to a whole bottle of red every few days, some days i will get more tipsy than others on it but never fully drunk, that takes 1 1/2 to 2!

I also have friends (with babies) that look at me with horror when they find this out, as if i spend every evening rolling round my house being sick and falling over.

imo If it helps you relax and enjoy your evening its no problem, if you wake up with purple lips and the shakes it might be best to have a break for a couple of days!!

Longtalljosie · 26/07/2009 19:45

I agree with expat there are plenty of ways in which you can knowingly damage your body. You can smoke, you can drink too much, you can eat too much.

But I don't think government guidance on units is nonsense. You don't hear medics disagreeing. I think it's a bit like the rough calorie count per day - yes, of course it depends on the person but if you're way out you should perhaps change your behaviour.

I would also say if you have difficulty having a day off wine (and by that I mean actual difficulty - not just "oh bugger it's wine-free Tuesday") then there may be a bit of an issue.

barnsleybelle · 26/07/2009 19:47

Expat... I'm 5ft 5 and 8st 12. I cycle and swim plus go to the gym 3-4 times a week. I eat a very healthy diet as we are a very sporty family. Thanks for taking all this into account as many other posters are not.

I drink most nights - or at least did when I'm not pg as I am atm. I also smoke (ditto, not when pg). I am well aware that it is not good for my health. But I enjoy it. I don't see why people would feel a need to tell anyone - particularly a stranger on the internet - that they "need" to cut down/give up. If it's not affecting anything other than the health of the person doing it, why does it matter to someone else?

Different of course if it affects other people negatively.

The moral take on things like this (drinking, smoking, eating crap, not doing exercise etc) really annoys me. So bloody what if someone is drinking more than others/more than govt guidelines? Some people just don't spend their lives denying themselves things that are fun.

pointydog · 26/07/2009 20:06

It is also a bit irritating to get comments along the lines of killjoy, moral uptight freak, interfering do-gooder when someone has asked for everyone's opinion.

Just because someone thinks half-to-bottle of wine a night is a fuck of a lot doesn't mean they are a prissy scaremongerer.

barnsleybelle · 26/07/2009 20:11

pointy Yes i have asked for everyones opinion but please could you enlighten me as to where i have implied that anyone is a "killjoy, moral uptight freak, or interfering do-gooder"

Either you are reading 2 threads at the same time or you are paranoid

Drinking every day defintiely is detrimental to your well being no matter how much you try and justify it.Alcohol is a depressant raises blood pressure and dehydrates which stresses the kidneys plus it destroys your skin.I don't think you'd be asking if you weren't concerned

pointydog · 26/07/2009 20:13

I'm referring to fattipuff's post, belle

barnsleybelle · 26/07/2009 20:15

Oh i see... Tis maybe me who is paranoid

OP posts:
pointydog · 26/07/2009 20:20

You do tend to think all posts are about you

barnsleybelle · 26/07/2009 20:22

Maybe it's the wine

FattipuffsandThinnifers · 26/07/2009 20:25

Pointy, I didn't actually say anyone was a "prissy scaremonger". I happen to agree that a bottle of wine is a lot, and detrimental to health.

I just don't see why it is someone else's place to say "you need to cut down/give up".

pointydog · 26/07/2009 20:28

I know no one used those actual words, I'm just saying that is how some comments translate to me. I think it's someone's place if their opinion is asked and that's what they think, that's all.

expatinscotland · 26/07/2009 20:30

But people in some European nations drink every day, probably not a half-bottle, although who's to say, and they're not all dropping dead of alcohol-related disease.

So I'm confused.

I'm also confused because the recommendation is no more than 2 units/day, 14 units/week, but they also include going at least 2 days without alcohol.

Well, isn't that recommendation really 10 units/week then?

See what I mean?

I'm just an onlooker here, because if I had that kind of money I'd be back getting my hair professionally highlighted rather than buying wine (and I could ditch these damn boxes of dye!).

But I just don't buy the recommendations or that drinking every day is going to impair everyone's health.

Think it's all too subjective to make a blanket declaration and it's a bit like when the guidlines changed for drinking during pregnancy and they basically said it was because people are too stupid to count so they changed it to none at all.

Or when they cut off the tap for Medised because of the assumption that people are too stupid to add.

lovechoc · 26/07/2009 21:08

I'm with moondog here. Wine is more enjoyable when you are in company and with a meal at the table. I don't really understand the drinking alone thing, isn't that a bit depressing??

I agree also with a previous poster, that this OP is obviously sub-consciously concerned about her alcohol consumption otherwise she would not have posted this on a forum.

lovechoc · 26/07/2009 21:09

and drinking a lot of wine on a regular basis can make you paranoid

barnsleybelle · 26/07/2009 21:16

lovechoc... I assure you i am not "sub-conciously concerned"... if i were, i would have just said that!
I was genuinely just interested in what people thought. If i was waking feeling rough, or spending money i didn't really have or twitching when there's no wine in the fridge, or if my consumption was increasing then i would be concerned.
Oh and no, i don't find it depressing, if i did i wouldn't do it

OP posts:
lovechoc · 26/07/2009 21:23

why be so defensive over other poster's opinions though? surely that's the whole point of AIBU??

That's good for you that you feel happy about your alcohol consumption on a weekly basis.

barnsleybelle · 26/07/2009 21:38

I've not been defensive in as much as disagreeing and surely that's the whole point of AIBU too?

OP posts:
expatinscotland · 26/07/2009 21:41

K, we've seen it now: smoking incredibly demonised. Now drink.

Can't wait to see when food is, similarly, given how overweight a lot of us our (myself included).

expatinscotland · 26/07/2009 21:44

I can see it now:

'AIBU: I'm 2st. overweight and I eat 30 units of chocolate a week and enjoy it.'

Followed by loads of posts about how your heart is going to blow up and you're going to get cancer in every organ and you're risking your entire life for a piece of chocolate when you should be going running to chill.

LOL. Hell would freeze over before that happened.

ilovemydogandmrobama · 26/07/2009 21:48

There would be a government warning that women were only allowed 20 units of chocolate, whereas men were allowed 30 units...
