to enjoy wine every night?

Been to a football gala today with ds and got involved in a discussion about drinking.
I probably drink at least 2 glasses of wine every night. Sometimes half bottle sometimes full.
DH works away so my nights when dcs are in bed are my time. I look forward to my wine.
Anyway equal amounts of mums at the gala either agreed with me or were horrified.
What's the general opinion on here i wonder???

Also the OP may not be a car-owner or driver.

FWIW, I never slept soundly even if I were completely blotto, but then, I'm a raging insomniac even at the best of times.

Mumcentreplus · 26/07/2009 16:58

I'm not drunk after 1 bottle of wine..but then i have a genetic predisposition to drink copious amounts of alcohol ..

pointydog · 26/07/2009 17:33

A whole bottle of wine is going to have a significant effect on anyone. Most wine is 14%. Whether someone appears drunk or not is another question. If someone has developed a tolerance to alcohol, they are going to drink a hell of a lot more before there is any obvious effect on behaviour.

barnsleybelle · 26/07/2009 17:34

I don't drink and drive because it's against the law, and not because i think my judgement is affected. If i were to lose my license i would consider that to be a great inconveniance to me.

Once again to the people who are bleating on about units and being drunk. They are not necessarily one and the same.
I assure you that i've been drunk on many occasions in the past and know exactly what it's like. I am not drunk after a bottle of wine consumed over 5 hours and a meal.

OP posts:
pointydog · 26/07/2009 17:37

No one's bleating on. You just don't seem to like other opinions.

moondog · 26/07/2009 17:44

I can smoke loads of fags on a night out asnd then none for months. Same with booze. Never used to be like this but finally learnt some discipline I think, or rather, I learnt that I can't be effectively a single parent and do a demanding f/t job if I feel any less than 100%.

Drinking regulalry makes yuo feel bad in thew morning, even if yuo register the feeling as normal, it's actuially never as good as yuo could feel.

Plus, the hangovers that last for days do me in and exhaust me physically and emotionally.

barnsleybelle · 26/07/2009 17:44

That's wrong pointy dog. i do like other peoples opinions, i wouldn't have posted a ? asking for them if i didn't

It's just frustrating me that just because some people feel they would be blotto on a bottle of wine they are assuming so am i.

Everybody reacts different to alcohol for whatever reason. We all know people who go out and are sozzled after one lager and others that can drink all night and not seem affected. Don't we?

Britian one of few countries where people drink without food and not at the table.
I've never understood that whole sitting on the sofa with a bottle watching a dvd stuff that women especially seem into.

I want to drink at atable with food and music and company.

barnsleybelle · 26/07/2009 17:53

Sounds nice moondog but as dh works overseas the only company i have after 7pm is an elderly basset hound with a farting problem .

OP posts:
pointydog · 26/07/2009 17:53

That's why I said one of the reasons for people not acting in a stereotypical drunk manner is that they have developed more of a tolerance for alcohol. It's still alcohol and it still affects the body/liver. That's all.

moondog · 26/07/2009 17:55

Barnsley, my dh works overseas too so my evening entertainment is limited in similar fashion! I don't drink alone though-too depressing.

barnsleybelle · 26/07/2009 17:59

yes pointy it does affect the liver and if you read all my posts i've commented on a link that someone gave me which i intend to follow it's advice. To have 2 days alcohol free in a row.

barnsleybelle · 26/07/2009 18:01

I do wish that everyone would read all my posts on this thread before making the same comments to which i've heard, accepted and responded to.

bibbitybobbityhat · 26/07/2009 18:04

I think the thread has moved on to a more general discussion about alcohol consumption and addictions rather than everyone piling in with personal comments about you barnsley.

Fwiw I can easily drink a bottle of white or rose wine over the course of an evening and not feel or appear drunk, or hungover the next day. And I am 5'2"!

barnsleybelle · 26/07/2009 18:07

OK bibbi, your probably right about that. I suppose because i posted the thread i just assume the comments are to me

Op - you are drinking too much. It's not a question of enjoyment. You are knackering your body and risking your future. Sorry but you need to stop your dependance on booze and I'm relieved to read that you will be taking steps to do that. Good Luck.

barnsleybelle · 26/07/2009 18:14

northern straight to the point, i like it

I'm not dependant on booze though, not by a long shot, but thanks anyway.

AuntieMaggie · 26/07/2009 18:17

Haven't read this whole thread but watched an episode of this morning where they did liver tests on different types of drinkers and those that had a glass or two of wine every night had worse damage than the binge drinkers who would drink once a week all weekend because their livers never get a break.

So on that note I wouldn't drink every night. You organs don't ever get chance to repair themselves from the effects of alcohol.

suis · 26/07/2009 18:29

Barnsley... I did not mean to imply you would drive drunk, quite the opposite.

What I meant was that people wouldn't drive after drinking, and the govt limits for that are rooted in scientific evidence that shows impaired functioning even when a person feels unaffected. So by the same logic, after 12 units in a bottle of wine there may be a marked effect on judgement or sleepiness etc. even if you don't actual feel drunk, and that's may be not a good idea when a person is in sole charge of children at the time.

bluejeans · 26/07/2009 18:42

I enjoy a glass of wine of an evening to relax, sometimes just a glass and sometimes a bottle probably about 3 nights a week - but...just back from a week's holiday, we stayed in a cottage and DH and I had wine every night - I've decided I definitely didn't enjoy it as much when it was 'on tap'!

LindenAvery · 26/07/2009 18:45

Agree with Auntie Maggie - a bottle of wine per night , every night for 'an average person' will lead to liver damage sooner or later depending on the individual.

Alcohol gets broken down in the liver by enzymes, if you overload the system the liver can't cope and the resultant chemicals damage liver cells. The liver has the ability to repair itself but not without a break and the larger the quantity of alcohol you consume the bigger the interval required.

You may be able to ask for LFT - liver function tests - if you are worried.

expatinscotland · 26/07/2009 18:48

'You are knackering your body and risking your future.'

Sorry, Northern, but we have no way of knowing who is going to develop health problems as the result of drinking at such levels.

We really don't.

We can sort of speculate, but a good deal of it might be genetic.

Same as how some people like my dad can smoke for 55 years and still be here to 'enjoy' another fag (because apparently he does) and someone else like this lady featured in Good Housekeeping this month was dead by teh age of 36.

Or one person will be George Best and the next Richard Harris, knocking it back in his 70s and dying at normal life expectancy for a man born when he was.

I'm too old, fat and skint to party these days.

barnsleybelle · 26/07/2009 18:52

linden I don't drink a bottle a night by any means, just sometimes its a bottle.
I'm also not worried.. I recently had a series of blood tests for something entirely different and my lft's were spot on.
To maintain this i do intend to have 2 free nights a week as i've said probably on about 4 of my posts now

OP posts:
passionfruity · 26/07/2009 19:10

I haven't read all of the posts so apologies if this point has already been made but if I were you I would think seriously about cutting down in order to reduce the risk of getting (certain types of) CANCER. See here:

info.cancerresearchuk.org/healthyliving/alcohol/

So many people seem to be in denial about this!

Northernlurker · 26/07/2009 19:18

expat - In the case of alcohol I think it more likely that some genetic backgrounds protect against certain effects rather than some backgrounds predisposing you to trouble - so it would be Richard Harris who is lucky rather than typical iyswim. The liver of a person who drinks every night has more to contend with than the liver of a non drinker and therefore it is reasonable in my view to expect trouble. Anyway the op has said she isn't going to do that so all power to her non drinking elbow
