-especially the ones with fat, hairy stomachs. Unless, of course, they are in their own garden or on the beach. Went to a cricket match the other day and one of the dads sat next to me was topless. He had the most enormous hairy stomach and very small shorts so that when he was sitting down you couldn't see the shorts for his overhanging gut and it looked like he was naked. I couldn't bear to look in his direction - put me off my picnic. I see blokes wandering round the local shopping centre with no top on too - even if they're fit looking it still makes me feel uncomfortable.

because it's fucking cold in December?

howtotellmum · 01/06/2009 14:02

Not sure if you don't know what "mores" are, or if you are questioning the point I made...

Mores - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Mores (singular mos) is the Latin term for societal norms, customs, virtues or values. Mores derive from the established practices of a society rather than ..

Today, I had a bare-chested man walk past me actually flexing his muscles! I'm not sure how he expected me to react but I just flatly ignored him.

nappyaddict · 01/06/2009 14:07

I must admit it does bother me when people come into the pub/restaurant I work in all bare chested or in bikini tops.

It also annoys me in indoor shopping centres. They are air conditioned and there's not even any sun so there really isn't any need.

Aside from that I couldn't give a monkeys.

mrsruffallo · 01/06/2009 14:08

Thanks duchesse !-and howtotellmum thanks for your comprehensive links and explanations
I don't know why anyone would feel strongly about this. I really don't. When it is hot in the city the humidity becomes unbearable.

How much flesh is too much?
A mini skirt and vest?
A pair of shorts and a bikini top?
A topless male wearing jeans?

I don't find any of those offensive, no matter what shape they are in.
I don't find nudity shocking though

HellHathNoFury · 01/06/2009 14:09

I think it was my overseas relaxed upbringing.. no one gave a rats arse out there

Now I agree, sweaty nakedness on the tube ain't great. Nor would I like to see sweaty nakedness in a decent restaurant. But otherwise I really couldn't give a toss.

duchesse · 01/06/2009 14:09

And yet you still see blue-legged girls out in December wearing extremely little, even though it's fucking cold. So, there must be some other issue at play here other than the desire to stay warm. Cos, if those girls wanted to stay warm, they'd be in woolies and trousers, not mini-skirts and vest tops.

downbutnotout · 01/06/2009 14:13

I used to live in Bermuda and it is illegal for men or women to be topless or clad only in swimwear in any public place other than the beach or a swimming pool. In fairness, it is a fairly conservative society, but it does make for a more pleasant and respectful atmosphere, imho. But I am not one of life's happy nudists.

HellHathNoFury · 01/06/2009 14:13

Actually come to think of it if I had a decent body I'd get it out at every single possible opportunity

wahwahwah · 01/06/2009 14:18

I did some some spectacular speciment jogging in Hyde Park at the weekend. In fact, I may go there agian today!

They do fit into 2 categories: showoffs with a 6-pack and lardies with a family pack (and often a sunburned head for some reason).

Blondeshavemorefun · 01/06/2009 14:58

a nice tanned non hairy body is ok to strip

a white hairy one

luckily dh is of the first kind - he stripped off in pub garden yesterday

AngeChica · 01/06/2009 18:14

Ha don't any of you live in the north east? You would soon become immune to unpleasant semi-nakedness. People do it all year round here even on a Saturday neet in December.

howtotellmum · 01/06/2009 18:19

Especially young lassies gannin out on the toon !

EvenBetaDad · 01/06/2009 18:25

AngeChica - DW is from the North East. I know exactly what you mean.

We used to walk round the 'Big Market' in December just marvelling at the summer dresses the girls were wearing and the blokes with just a shirt and trousers on - no coats anywhere to be seen.

DW and me were the exception - we felt like right old foggies (even in our mid twenties) wrapped up with coats, hats, scarves and gloves.

MummyPenguin · 01/06/2009 18:27

Saw a young guy shirtless yesterday, he was very fit. In these cases it's a Good Thing. He was on a bus that I was on, we got on at the same stop, bus was pretty packed, he found a seat, the one next to him was empty, one of very few empty seats. I was sorely tempted to sit there, however, I was with DH and DC so sat on another available seat which was fortunately close enough to the fittie to be able to appreciate the view

MummyPenguin · 01/06/2009 18:29

I'll just add that I agree it's not nice or appropriate to see (however fit) in supermarkets

MichKit · 01/06/2009 18:30

YANBU at all... I hate seeing it. But I guess its a consequence of the weather, no

Jenbot · 01/06/2009 18:31

I was just going to post a thread about this!

DH and I went for a walk in the woods / round some lakes earlier this week. He said he could take his top off as it counted as "nature", like being on the beach. I said it didn't because we were walking about with a pram, not sunbathing, and I didn't want people to think I was married to a bloody yob.

I pointed out some louts on the way home with their tops off drinking cans of lager in the street. He said they looked like respectable young gentlemen. He said he was going to get a Union Jack tattoo across his chest like one of them.

I'm sending him a link to this thread.

Lotster · 01/06/2009 18:44

YANBU! Just back from Devon and there were sweaty barebacks galore. Mostly showing off their "tats". Worst was a man on way back home through somerset at 10pm in a petrol garage. Made me jump when i turned around to see him half naked behind me!

EvenBetaDad · 01/06/2009 19:04

Ths thread is ever so funny.

There are so many double standards (as well as double chins) on show .

simplesusan · 01/06/2009 22:16

How come it is only fat, gross, ugly, bald, sweating mingers who walk around topless?

For gawd sake cover up and have some self respect!

simplesusan · 01/06/2009 22:18

Mrsgruf-I personally do not want to be exposed to nudity when doing my weekly shop, especially when picking out a cucumber

mamamila · 01/06/2009 22:41

have to say i love to see people shirtless and 'acres of flesh' on show. it feels summery and the cheerfulness is infectious

i waddled (29wks preg) through the park this afternoon and felt very uplifted at the sight of so many exposed bodies, especially reflecting on yesterday's burkha/ veil thread.

it's wonderful to be in a country where people feel free to take off their clothes without a hang up and whilst i appreciate the sight of the young n fit more i think it's cool that old/ fat n hairy people are swept away by the excitement of sunshine and are unashamed to flaunt it
