-especially the ones with fat, hairy stomachs. Unless, of course, they are in their own garden or on the beach. Went to a cricket match the other day and one of the dads sat next to me was topless. He had the most enormous hairy stomach and very small shorts so that when he was sitting down you couldn't see the shorts for his overhanging gut and it looked like he was naked. I couldn't bear to look in his direction - put me off my picnic. I see blokes wandering round the local shopping centre with no top on too - even if they're fit looking it still makes me feel uncomfortable.

As I think I said before, it could be Loenardo Di Caprio and Kate Moss walking down the high street in swimwear and I'd want them to put their clothes on. It's noting to do with age, gender or looks. It's everything to do with wearing appropriate clothes for the circumstances, and not doing anything that might upset other people if you can possibly avoid it. Basic civilized behaviour.

howtotellmum · 01/06/2009 12:39

PLEASE mums- if you are your DH/DP are thinking of disrobing in town- don't!!!!

If this thread prevents just one person from inflicting their naked body on the High Street, that will be great.

trixymalixy · 01/06/2009 12:48

YANBU, there was a fat hairy guy in the supermarket with no top on on Saturday. i nearly vomited.

Docbunches · 01/06/2009 12:49

YANBU - I think it's plain wrong.

Another thing I hate is at public swimming pools when you see women wearing thong type bikini bottoms - yuk!

nappyaddict · 01/06/2009 12:55

Barefoot So did you walk home in your bikini top or did you put a tshirt on over the top?

tonysoprano · 01/06/2009 13:02

It is unbelievable the state of some people as soon as the sun shines. I was at our local park and there were women just sunbathing in thier bras. FGS at least wear a bikini! It's so horribly British. Can you imagine a Frenchman walking down the street with his tattooed fat body. Yuk.

Maveta · 01/06/2009 13:06

YANBU - people definitely need to keep it covered up! Regardless of their physical appearance. Short shorts and a vest top are really the absolute minimum of clothing anyone should wear in a public place (not the pool/beach etc). I hate seeing men walk around the shops topless, it's not even WARM in the shops, its normally a bit chillier and actually REQUIRES covering up a bit.

I live in Spain and it gets very hot, all summer, so walk around your house/ garden naked for all I care. Wear a thong and nothing else on the beach. That is f-i-n-e. But no one else wants to see it anywhere else, so put it away!

Overmydeadbody · 01/06/2009 13:07

Only common men take their tops off in public places (apart from a few exceptions like swimming pools)

Overmydeadbody · 01/06/2009 13:09

I agree completely with duchese and howtotellmum

PremenstrualChickens · 01/06/2009 13:13

It's not the nakedness that offends me, it's the globules of sweat dripping on things that makes me boak. Just don't think it's very pleasant for everyone else if you insist on sharing.

troutpout · 01/06/2009 13:23

I don't mind it too much tbh
It's only a fat tummy after all
Surely they feel a bit weird going into shops with their bellies out though?
Are they doing it because they are genuinely hot ( a t shirt doesn't make much difference) or to get a sun burn? Or is it just to show everyone they are enjoying the weather without having to look too happy and friendly?
Actually the more i think about it...the weirder it becomes.

mrsruffallo · 01/06/2009 13:32

YABU-and I am shocked at the attitude of most of you.
I actually don't mind this at all. Just because someone is out of shape it doesn't make me feel sick or disgusted.

It doesn't really matter does it?

But then I probably look at human bodies differently- I don't notch up their 'fitness' or scan for flabby bits to sneer at.
I think that everyone is beautiful in their own way, I really do

mrsruffallo · 01/06/2009 13:34

howtotellmum- holidays abroad available to plebs??
How very dare they!!!!

tvfriend · 01/06/2009 13:35

It's the men who are topless on the tube that really upset me, especially at rush hour....

howtotellmum · 01/06/2009 13:35

MrsR- you are missing the point-it is not just to do with anyone's shape- it is to do with decency and what is socially acceptable. If you weren't cold, would you ewear clothes? Bet you would. Why? so you don't offend anyone- it's exactly the same.

Overmydeadbody · 01/06/2009 13:35

It's not so much what it looks like as what is social convention.

I guess it's a class thing.

howtotellmum · 01/06/2009 13:37

Class- of course- why didn't we all just say that before?
You peeps who insist on baring all the minute the sun shines, are just soooooo lower class.

plantsitter · 01/06/2009 13:42

This thread makes me really sad. I suppose people can object to all naked flesh if they can be bothered, but all this bandying 'fat,' 'disgusting' stuff about is quite frankly thoroughly objectionable. Why should other people change their behaviour 'cos YOU find the way they look unacceptable? And we wonder why our kids bully each other in school.

tonysoprano · 01/06/2009 13:50

plantsitter - that's not the point. personally, i don't care if you have the most amazing body in the world, i simply believe that if you are out in public you should wear clothes (apart from beach natch). It's just a matter of common decency.

howtotellmum · 01/06/2009 13:52

Don't you think that the people who are disrobing in public should consider who they might be offending?

The mores of this country, and most other civilised countries, have evolved in such a way over centuries that it is considered inappropriate to show too much bare skin in a public place. If you don't know or cannot understand that you are very insensitive.

They should change their behaviour because it is offensive. We could say we were being bullied as we are having to bear ( great pun!) the consequences of their thoughtless, selfish and insensitive behaviour.

plantsitter · 01/06/2009 13:58

I'm prepared to concede the 'common decency' point although I think we have much better things to worry about, but talking about how old, fat, hairy and whatever else people are disgusting naked is frankly childish and way more offensive than going against debatable social 'mores'.

mrsruffallo · 01/06/2009 13:59

The mores of this country- what on earth do you mean?

BarefootShirl · 01/06/2009 13:59

Nappyaddict - I walked home in shorts and bikini top (barefoot as usual). Also popped into our local covenience store on the way. Have no wish to offend but it was a lovely sunny day and I feel there are more important things in life to worry about.

duchesse · 01/06/2009 14:01

MrsR- mores= social customs. I don't think that many people would feel it appropriate to wander down the street semi-naked in December, so why would they do it in June?
