-especially the ones with fat, hairy stomachs. Unless, of course, they are in their own garden or on the beach. Went to a cricket match the other day and one of the dads sat next to me was topless. He had the most enormous hairy stomach and very small shorts so that when he was sitting down you couldn't see the shorts for his overhanging gut and it looked like he was naked. I couldn't bear to look in his direction - put me off my picnic. I see blokes wandering round the local shopping centre with no top on too - even if they're fit looking it still makes me feel uncomfortable.

In general, I agree with OP, but then there was a delicious bloke running shirtless on Tooting Common this morning and his pecs and six pack quite brightened my morning. Dh caught me checking him out though. Do hate sweaty men outside pubs with no shirt though.

Triggles · 31/05/2009 14:31

I have to agree with onagar - everyone has a right to be comfortable - lots of people wear things that I wouldn't choose to wear in public - but I think the basic idea should be "if you don't like it, don't look"

Interesting thing. I went to the Terra Mitica Theme park near Benidorm in Spain not long after it first opened.

There were lots of prominently displayed signs in Spanish, English and German telling men to keep their shirts on - i.e. no bare chests.

Fast forward a couple of years, Terra Mitica is soled to Paramount Studios. The signs were taken down...

Personally think the Spanish had the right idea in the first place.

FairLadyRantALot · 31/05/2009 14:33

so triggles, is going topless acceptable for women too, than?

Lovesdogsandcats · 31/05/2009 14:41

"you're hypnotically tracing a bead of sweat as it wends its way through their greying chest wig to meet the greater rivulet halfway down their stomach?"

Although, DP and I were in the park yesterday and there were lots folk about having picnics and enjoying the sun and we decided we didn't mind if fellas had bare chests and women were wearing bikini tops when they were sitting/sunbathing but they had to cover up again when they wanted to walk about again.

On the street or in shops then no way, get your clothes back on, a bit of class please.

LaurieFairyCake · 31/05/2009 14:48

Yep, walking in town or round shops you need to cover up even if model-like, sunbathing in parks/gardens ok shirtless imo.

If running at 6am also ok if toned to go shirtless.

MrsAshleyBanjo · 31/05/2009 14:51

No, don't agree with "don't like don't look" at all. It is grim. You do not see this in Europe do you? (Well, not as much). All those milk-bottle shoulders and sunken chests. Horrible, horrible, horrible. And I hate seeing women's midriffs all the times as well. I just don't want to see it.

brightongirldownunder · 31/05/2009 15:50

I think it depends on how hot they are .

Over here everyone (well, apart from me) seems to work out day and night and I'm totally spoilt with the number of half naked, handsome, toned men that run past me in the park. Honestly, I should really report them for raising my blood pressure...

howtotellmum · 31/05/2009 16:09

I think MOST people should keep covered up- not just men!

I am sick of seeing women with fat arms, fat bellies, fat legs etc etc- exposed to the sun.

And men with hairy armpits on display along with over hanging bellies- PLEASE!

If you are not in shape- keep it covered please, unless you are on the beach or at home.

Most of you are not a pretty sight!

Lucia39 · 31/05/2009 16:12

A "wife beater" is the term applied to those vests/tops that some men like to wear. It is usually worn with shorts and a cheap necklace chain of some description. Other optional accessories may include a can of Stella and a large, aggressive canine!

brightongirldownunder · 31/05/2009 16:14

Bloody hell, its only skin. It really doesn't bother me to be honest. But, in true MN fashion, each to their own..

brightongirldownunder · 31/05/2009 16:17

Obviously if you are sweating over the melons in the supermarket, it may be advisable to wear something for health and safety reasons

Grumpyoldcaaaaaaaa · 31/05/2009 16:19

'Obviously if you are sweating over the melons in the supermarket, it may be advisable to wear something for health and safety reasons'

Oh crikey, I will never, ever be able to look a melon in the stalk again.

barnsleybelle · 31/05/2009 16:20

am getting the general gist that it's only overweight/hairy half naked men that most object to.

Hmmmm...

howtotellmum · 31/05/2009 16:20

BGDU- there is skin and skin..
there is taut, toned , blemish-free skin and there are acres of white flabby skin, covered in various places by hair.

I am always amazed at some people's idea that what they put on show to the public is, in all their nakedness, in some way, aesthetically beautiful. Don't they have mirros at home?

brightongirldownunder · 31/05/2009 16:21

hehe sorry, been on the vino. Think its time for bed - its 1:20am here

LaurieFairyCake · 31/05/2009 16:22

As a fat woman I do not want to see very overweight women in the supermarket wearing bikini tops either.

Too much flesh of either sex is enough to put me off my shopping.

barnsleybelle · 31/05/2009 16:22

howtotell.... Maybe they are stripping off because they are hot and not because they think they are "aesthetically beautiful". They probably don't care what anyone thinks.

Personally i would rather see a happy friendly half dressed overweight torso than one of those posy look at me types.

TitsalinaBumsquash · 31/05/2009 16:24

No no no! Not just fat people EVERYONE should wear a resonable amount of clothes, i don't want to see Mr and Mrs Perfect body wandering down the street, her in hot pants and a string bikini top her boobs bouncing around, i don't want to see him with just a small pair of jean shorts on, cover up in public people, what ever your shape!

One reason why i hate the beach!

brightongirldownunder · 31/05/2009 16:24

But why should people be ok with toned bodies and not with "white, flabby" ones? Is it just me that thinks its really not that important? Maybe its because I was brought up by hippies...

brightongirldownunder · 31/05/2009 16:25

laurie, the only time I'd be put off shopping is in the raw meat aisle. It would just get too confusing! All that skin..

TitsalinaBumsquash · 31/05/2009 16:25

Most shops/food places/bars have signs up in SUmmer saying 'Please wear your shirts/shoes' to stop sweaty nakedness in the fruit and veg section'

brightongirldownunder · 31/05/2009 16:27

Just imagining sweaty nakedness in the fruit and veg section...
