to be annoyed at this new term of 'full time mum'

i know i'm not being unreasonable.

a woman on that lottery 1-100 show on sat night referred to herself as a 'full time mum'

i take it she meant sahm instead.

i have no bones with anyone's choice as to what the do, sahm of wohm.

but... i was so annoyed i felt she was referring to wohm as - part timers??

does she forget that we do the same stuff as well as a full week at work!!

i was with my mother when we watched the show, and she has 4 dc who have left home, and says she is still a full time mum regardless.

ok rant over.

Riven - I disagree about the term SAHM having been around for decades. It's relatively new and it's quite ugly.

Ah right dolly, so now you have to resort to making up what I think. Always a good last resort eh?

Yes, I am a mum, all the time. Even when I'm at the hairdressers. You don't like that, because you want to make 'full time mum' into a term that control, applied to people who fit your provisos. Your problem dear.

thedolly · 27/05/2009 14:40

so violethill, are you happy to say that you only look after your children part time as cthea suggests?

cthea · 27/05/2009 14:41

JeanPoole - bye, we'll be the better without your insults.

violethill · 27/05/2009 14:43

Right, really must untie those kids from the bannisters now and switch the 'mum' button back on.

May see you all later when I've had enough of them, switch DH into 'dad' mode and go back into my part time mum status ROFL

thedolly · 27/05/2009 14:43

It's called reading between the lines, some people are good at it and some people aren't

FairLadyRantALot · 27/05/2009 14:43

Riven said Full-time-mum not SAHM....

Isn't your mum button on full time this week (it's half term is it not?)

blondie80 · 27/05/2009 14:45

jean, the only paranoia seems to be coming from the non working mums.

as though they are not being given recognition and thought of as layabouts.

these non working mums have decided to call themselves full time mums as though they do something more for their dc than wohm.

most of you say you are going back to work eventually, so just say that your not working, while your kiddies are small, this doesn't imply that wohm are less than full time mums.

OP posts:
cthea · 27/05/2009 14:45

thedolly - I don't understand where I said that.

morningsun · 27/05/2009 14:45

You can't be full time WOTH and look after babies full time in the house cos thats just plain silly

Whereas the SAHM isn't even allowed one "full time" description !!

Why should someone who WOTH decree to a SAHM what she should call herself if its true?

This is crazy

FairLadyRantALot · 27/05/2009 14:47

blondie, you are deluding yourself........honest....because it is clear, from this thread, that all mums are paranoid

cthea · 27/05/2009 14:47

Riven - sorry, must have misunderstood you then. I've only heard of SAHM relatively recently (less than 10 years). I don't know about full time mum as a term, how long it's been about. I guess it was more "just a mum" till it had to be made into something more sophisticated and it became a job - as seen by some.

cthea · 27/05/2009 14:49

Morningsun - we don't all have babies. babies grow up, life moves on. Maybe we should too.

cthea · 27/05/2009 14:49

On this thread I mean.

morningsun · 27/05/2009 14:50

blondie ~ I hate to say this but they do do more for their dc while they're looking after them!Seeing as they are there with them!
To deny that is equivalent to someone saying to you that you don't have a real job its imaginary!

jellybeans · 27/05/2009 14:52

I agree morning sun. As long as you are happy being a WOHM who cares what someone else calls themselves. Also agree why should WOHMs dictate what SAHM/FTMs call themselves? When I worked f/t it didn't bother me.

cthea - your words: I don't see anything wrong in saying "I look after my children full time''

this implies that people who don't don't i.e. they do it 'part time'

morningsun · 27/05/2009 14:53

cthea ~ yes I realise that but I think most peoples usage of sahm relates to full time care pre school. After that time as blondie says we are all full time mums as its not a daytime/employment issue so much.

cthea · 27/05/2009 14:54

"When I worked f/t it didn't bother me." As it doesn't many who work f/t because they never hear it in the workplace. Then you come someplace like MN on a morning when it's likely to be mainly SAHMs and you get an earache of the finer, deeper implications of each term.

thedolly · 27/05/2009 14:56

When a FTM goes back to work she becomes a mum again, no need for the FT

jellybeans · 27/05/2009 14:57

I used to generally say SAHM or p/t student when my kids were at school but now I have a baby I say either SAHM or FTM. I didn't parent f/t when my kids were at school or when I worked f/t but was still a mum obviously just not caring for them f/t.
