to be bl**dy furious that my DD has measles because other parents won't vaccinate?

poor DD is only 11 mo and has horrid measles all over her, full of cold, streaming eyes, diarrhea, very unhappy and sleepy and limp. I am so so for her, but more I am absolutely bloody with idiot parents who won't have the MMR!

The doctor actually told me this morning that the reason it is so prevalent in our area is because of stupid people refusing to vaccinate their children and compromising the immunity of the whole group. So now my LO, who is only 2 months off having the vaccination herself, is really really sick because of other people's stupidity. It's making my blood boil! Do people not realise how dangerous it can be in little babies? And does anyone still seriously believe the so called "research" which claimed a link between MMR and autism? It has been so completely discredited in recent years you would think people would have got over it by now and started vaccinating again

Arrgh!!

you have my sympathy
good luck

MmeLindt · 28/04/2009 11:32

I do understand your feelings, I would be exactly the same.

There are some people who cannot have their children vaccinated, because of family history or severe allergies.

It is a very controversial topic and you are likely to hear other opinions on this one.

Hope your DD recovers soon.

jack99 · 28/04/2009 11:33

You are quite right novicemama.

All the soppy parents who refuse to vaccinate their dcs against these childhood diseases conveniently forget what it was like before we had these vaccines.

Children died. Regularly. It's as simple as that. And it will all happen again if we do not get the immunity of the general population back up again.

I have a degree in microbiology so I have some idea what I am talking about.

I hope your DD is feeling better soon. I am so sorry for the poor little love.

Overmydeadbody · 28/04/2009 11:37

YANBU, not at all. I'd be seeing red too

GypsyMoth · 28/04/2009 11:37

thats terrible. hope she improves soon, would hate to be in your shoes.

ThePhantomPlopper · 28/04/2009 11:37

Poor little thing. Hope she gets well quickly.

I researched the MMR before i gave it to my two. The pros out weighed the cons.

Fleetingglimpse · 28/04/2009 11:37

YANBU.

Not vaccinating your child is like not putting a seat belt on them when driving in case the seat belt injures them in a crash IMO.

In other words short sighted and stupid.

I hope your DD feels better soon.

Why, Marla, when there is a perfectly good combined vaccine?

MadameCastafiore · 28/04/2009 11:37

YANBU.

TheCrackFox · 28/04/2009 11:37

YANBU. Was so relieved when my boys were old enough to be vaccinated.

YanknCock · 28/04/2009 11:37

YANBU in the least.

jack99 · 28/04/2009 11:37

Is that a reason for not getting your dcs immunised at all, Marla?

MmeLindt · 28/04/2009 11:39

We actually cancelled a holiday to Tuscany when DD was 8mths old as they had a measles outbreak. I can remember the relief when she eventually had the MMR

expatinscotland · 28/04/2009 11:39

FWIW, my mother lost a lot of the hearing in one ear from measles, and she now has endless problems with it - she has a grommet in it now - and she's nearly 68.

And she was lucky, two of her classmates that year died from measles complications.

SoupDragon · 28/04/2009 11:39

The only stupid people are those who blindly follow the herd without thinking for themselves and making an informed decision.

Grumpyoldcaaaaaaaa · 28/04/2009 11:40

My uncle is profoundly deaf because he contracted measles when he was a child (pre-vaccines).

And he was one of the lucky ones. He's 'only' deaf.

YANBU

But I know some people can't vaccinate due to allergies. I just can't understand people who don't want to vaccinate?

FAQinglovely · 28/04/2009 11:40
  1. How do you know that those children who didn't have the MMR didn't instead have the single vaccines - those figures aren't actually recorded.........
  1. I know of 2 children who had the MMR who had measles .
MrsGokWan · 28/04/2009 11:40

I can see why you are mad about your DC being so ill. I have had mine vaccinated but have to admit to waiting till they were a bit older to do so as I felt they were too young for the first one.

Can any one provide the statisics of child deaths when we didn't have to now, when we do?

I always remember as a child when some one had anything we would all pile round to theirs so we could get it. Though I was 7,8,9 when I had measles, german measles etc.

elportodelgato · 28/04/2009 11:40

OK LeonieSoSleepy - what are these risks of the combined vax then? I really would love for you to produce some (please note) proper peer-reviewed scientific research that shows any significant risk - and I mean research not anecdotes from friends or the internet
