to be shocked at 20 month old sitting in a pram feeding himself a jar of baby food on a bus?

Probably Miss Judgey pants here. But surely if he's capably feeding himself with a spoon, it shouldn't be a crappy jar of baby food! And on a bus while mum talking on her mobile phone!

Guessing he was a bout 20 months as older than my ds but prob not 2. Was a bit shocked at the self feeding on the bus,and crap nature of it....

....flame away.....
I'm ready for it..

OMG you mean the family isn't doing BLW?

mrsgboring · 23/03/2009 18:25

Baby jars are made from.. er food. Often fruit and veg and not much else (which is what makes them suboptimum as sole nutrition). So ideal for tiding a child over on the bus journey home, I would have thought?

justneedsomesleep · 23/03/2009 18:26

parents should watch their child eating at the very least...
and it was a meal...not a snack - don't think the bus is the place for this....

so i guess the meal on the bus with the parent not bothering their arse....

Not something I can get my knickers in a twist about really.

FAQinglovely · 23/03/2009 18:28

"parents should watch their child eating at the very least."

oops I've just failed miserably there then - my 3 DS's ahve just sat and eaten their dinner at the dining table round the corner, I can't see them

And besides - I often give something to DS3 to snack on while I'm getting on with something else - keeps him quiet so I can get on - I certainly don't give him a snack to sit and watch him eat it

tomanykidstoname · 23/03/2009 18:29

that a 1 n a half yr old could choke on a spoon if the bus breaks or someone knocked him n mums was payin no attention im sorry but i have lots of kids n yes i need to make phone calls but while my babies are eating they have my full attention n yes i do think most baby jars are crap there are some really good new ones that have came out recently but most r rubbish

DSM · 23/03/2009 18:31

Seriously, a jar for a 20 month old really is a snack, how do you know they didn't go home and have a proper meal? Maybe it was going to be later than normal routine, so she gave him a jar to keep him going until theu had their evening meal?

Its a jar of baby food FFS, as far as convenience foods go, she made a decent choice IMO.

Can I just ask, if you were on a bus journey, and your child is hungry, and all you have is a jar of baby food, would you deprive your child of that food, or would you feed your child?

I actually don't believe this post.

psychomum5 · 23/03/2009 18:31

at what point tho can you leave you children to eat without being constantly stared at???

1, 2, 3, 4........18???

oh, and quick disclaimer, I don;t actually fuck ducks, just in case anyone was shocked on my comment

FAQinglovely · 23/03/2009 18:31

and how do you know he was only 1 1/2yrs old??

Ds3 has 2 little "friends" he plays with regularly - one is about 6 months old than him, the other 3 months. He's exactly the same size as the one that's older than him, and about 20cm taller than the one that's 3 months older.

sachertorte · 23/03/2009 18:31

SOOOOO unreasonable! Justneedsomesleep, you really do need to get some shuteye!

justneedsomesleep · 23/03/2009 18:32

snacks on the go are fine....but does no one else think a meal on the bus is somehow wrong - not particularly fussed it was a jar btw (simply said it was)....

and think they should keep a close eye if a child is eating on a bus in case they DO choke with all the bumps along the way etc...

FAQinglovely · 23/03/2009 18:33

"at what point tho can you leave you children to eat without being constantly stared at?"

as soon as an older sibling is old enough to alert you if they're choking

DSM · 23/03/2009 18:34

psychomum - maybe there is never a 'safe' time to leave a child unattended to eat. In fact, I might ask my Mum to come round and watch me eat, just in case.

Maybe we shouldn't let children learn to do anything on their own?

JacquelineBouvier · 23/03/2009 18:35

what exactly is wrong with jars of baby food? what is in them that is so bad? this isn't the 70's when they were full of crap and e numbers.

yabvu and judgey.

ScottishMummy · 23/03/2009 18:35

what a clever wee boy feeding himself.you need to unclench

from a jar food passes rigorous standarsd and yes some folk buy it too

justneedsomesleep · 23/03/2009 18:36

guessing at the age FAQ - obviously I don't know for sure but like i said he looked older than my ds (who is nearly 18 months)

will go sleep now...........

Ivykaty44 · 23/03/2009 18:36

well perhaps they got caught short and the jar on the bus was better than a hungry screaming child.

it is a pity the mother didn't interact with the dc so YANBU

But perhaps it was an important call ?

DSM · 23/03/2009 18:36

What on earth makes you think that the jar was a meal for this apparent 20 month old? I would have assumed it was a snack TBH.

Odd to assume it was a meal?

Many people eat in cars and buses, I don't know of that many who choked and died after going over a bump.

CrushWithEyeliner · 23/03/2009 18:36

I agree with OP

Would you like to eat a meal on a moving Bus?

FAQinglovely · 23/03/2009 18:37

well when I first met the little boy who is only 3 months older than DS3 I thought he was much younger than him.........

TheFallenMadonna · 23/03/2009 18:37

Actually, you did refer to the jar's "crap nature"...

Guadalupe · 23/03/2009 18:38

Ds2 is two and he sometimes has those Ella's Kitchen astronaut-food things as a snack if we're out. He drinks them like a smoothie.

FAQinglovely · 23/03/2009 18:38

oh god so we're supposed to interact with our child for their every waking minute now are we???

CWE - I've eaten food on moving transport before - buses, trains, planes, cars.........I'm still alive to tell the tale

DSM · 23/03/2009 18:38

Oh FFS, the mother 'didn't interact with the child'??

You saw this mother and baby for a very short time on a bus, whilst she was on a phonecall. I truly hope that not anyone who sees me on a phonecall doesn't think it is 'sad' for my DS and that I must be neglecting him

I am going to assume she wasn't a middle class women in her 30's or 40's. Am I right?

justneedsomesleep · 23/03/2009 18:39

and i stand by the crap nature - i saw what he was eating...
