btw - I am not surprised by delia more annoyed and shame on her interviewer for not challenging her viewpoint - woman's hour is too cosy by half! Get delia on the Today programme to teach her what grilling truly means...

Gosh, if she really meant it like that, then it´s very sad. (Woman´s Hour still not available btw.. Anyone know what time it will be? Is it the same time every day? I often have this problem.. kids shouting when it´s on, can´t hear it properly first time round, have to repeat later..

Janos · 23/03/2009 13:53

Oh Delia

I'm not a feminist because I like men? Very bad show.

I did have a pair of dungarees but I was much younger...in my defence.

They are not flattering to the curvaceous woman

bigmouthstrikesagain · 23/03/2009 14:23

ooh how exciting my first 'discussion of the day' op - sorry - slight detour off topic - now that delia she's a one, etc.

KayHarkerIsPlayingWithMitchell · 23/03/2009 14:50

Accurately it would have been 'I'm not a feminist, I like men... to have more civil rights and privileges than women.' But I don't think that's what she meant, is it?

mrsruffallo · 23/03/2009 15:10

No sprogger, it's not about making all women feel good but it should be about women respecting each other's decisions isn't it?
Especially if those women are assuring you that their decision was freely made.

Otherwise you are getting into a class ridden argument- only the professional women with an independent bank balance are in a place to call themselves feminists and judge who else is or isn't for example- whereas life is much more interesting and complicated than that

MillyR · 23/03/2009 15:58

I think you can respect an individual's right to autonomy in making their own decisions, but it does not follow that you have to respect the actual decision.

LEMAGAIN · 23/03/2009 16:14

not read the thread, delia smith is a fucking tosser anyway . Im a feminist and i love men! REALLY love men!!

theDreadPiratePerArdua · 23/03/2009 16:14

Yup - liberation also means the liberty to make your own mistakes...

I don't think it's unsignificant that Nigella Lawson has not been filmed from the waist up often and when she is, the blocking to hide her generous bottom is very precise! The face is fine after the undounted lifts and copious amounts of botox.

jemart · 23/03/2009 17:17

I do like men, not sure if I'd call myself a feminist or not, I don't really understand what feminism stands for anymore, though clearly Delia is a bit daft.
Anyone able to explain for me what modern feminism is all about?

MrsMattie · 23/03/2009 17:18

Haven't read whole thread so apologies if I'm repeating, but...

Twit!

GLaDOS · 23/03/2009 17:22

MrsR, this is where feminism is confusing, I think. To think all women (and all men for that matter) should respect each others decisions is unrealistic - and we see the reality of that on MN every day. Being able to recognise that competition and the motives behind it is more important I think. Competition is good. It's actually what drives us all to some degree - it's certainly what drives evolution, but also its good to realise that things like alturism and cooperative behvior comes from that. By feminism saying 'the sisterhood is powerful' is missing the point that the sisterhood is made up of individuals.

Its really interesting that the most critical women on MN of other women are more materialistic, career women, who put their careers before kids. But they are just giving themselves a rationale fore their ownn choices the way women who put their kids first do. Theres obvioulsy some degree of insecurity there whatever choices we make, because non of our choices are guarentted to succeed.

GLaDOS · 23/03/2009 17:22

how interesting in response to delia's generalisation.a thread of generalisations

tattifer · 23/03/2009 19:04

woman's hour - doesn't the fact that it's still called that speak volumes?

"how interesting in response to delia's generalisation.a thread of generalisations" - but generalisations by females, so therefore automatically superior ones

bigmouthstrikesagain · 23/03/2009 19:04

for jemart a wiki explanation of 'modern feminism'

OP posts:
mrsruffallo · 23/03/2009 19:07

But what is it about if not chopice?
What about women who don't want a career, who reject the materialistic side of our culture, who want to be more self sufficient, live off the land and home ed?
Or the working woman who poo-poos the sisterhood
Who is the "feminist"?
Who is doing the judging? The economically successful one or the other?
It is never as simplistic as the right to work I'm afraid, and we have moved on since the seventies

pointydog · 23/03/2009 19:09

If you ever watched that toe-curlingly awful documentary following days in teh life of delia, you would know she is a freak. Major league.
