i think theres a huge difference between an intimidating misogynistic group of thugs shouting things at a woman in a threatening way and a cheeky group of teenage boys.

Im thinking along the lines of Smithy's relationship with Gavins mum in Gavin and Stacey. Some of the things he says he says to her are totally inappropriate really but its all done in such a charming funny way surely there's no offence there.

wotulookinat · 17/02/2009 16:13

Lol at GILF. That reminds me of that Catherine Tate sketch.

wotulookinat · 17/02/2009 16:13

or was it Little Britain?

VoteforGoat · 17/02/2009 16:15

we talked gilf last night.
lets face it teenage boys would find Me attractive so they really are not the best people to rate you.

Rhubarb · 17/02/2009 16:43

"cheeky"? Since when has it been "cheeky" to shout that you are a mother they'd like to fuck? And to shout this in front of your kids?

Define "cheeky" please?

kizzie · 17/02/2009 16:46

cheeky - referring back to my post re. Smithy out of Gavin and Stacey

thank god for dittany and rhubarbs posts i was really beginning to despair.Esp as this was all about being chuffed which is what made it so abhorrent in my eyes.teenage boys are morons half the time so can be excused for a few years while they engage brain and mouth but the OP is a grown up woman and mother

ILiketoMarmiteMarmite · 17/02/2009 17:32

ahem

Leo9 · 17/02/2009 17:49

great post dittany.

Great to read your comment and rhubarb's as I've so often thought I was really weird, as my first instinctive reaction to this in the street has always been anger! I've seen friends really delighted to get comments or whistles but I could never take pleasure in them - I think it is what dittany says about feeling 'put in your place' somehow. I absolutely can't bear some random bloke feeling he has the right to comment on my level of attractiveness, and it does not make me flattered or pleased one tiny bit.

You've put it into words really well dittany and have helped me realise why i've had this reaction.

VoteforGoat · 17/02/2009 18:22

thank god for all of you
yes
was very concerned about this thread

LoveMyLapTop · 17/02/2009 18:29

Your snidey remarks say more about you than this thread says about me.
I have nothing more to say.
Each to their own.

Really shocked at some of the horrndous comments aimed at LMLT on this thread, she certainly hasn't deserved any of that! You hold your head up, girl, and forget all that dereg rubbish, I enjoy reading your posts and often agree with what you say!

As for my opinion, well I tend to agree with the poster who said she would look on them disapprovingly and walk off, with a little skip in her step. Who doesn't want to hear they're looking good? However, if it was meant maliciously then that's a different story, but perhaps I'm shallow (and obviously not alone judging by the posts on here) but I think it's ok. Same as a wolf-whistle, or an appreciative glance, men have done it since time immemorial so it's not going to stop now whether you like it or not. I work with challenging youngsters so I've perfected my "scary eyes" look which usually prevents any further comment.
Am I also supposed to take offence at the old man who holds the door for me and calls me "lovey", is he some sort of sexual predator??

Only once have I felt threatened and that was when a group of workmen were doing the road outside my house. Every time I set foot outside I got comments which were leery but dealable-with. Then one went too far and commented openly on my boobs, of which I'm extremely sensitive. I strutted up to him, asked him his name then told him, very sweetly and calmly, that if he so much as looked at me again I would have him fired. That sorted it.

ladymariner · 17/02/2009 19:17

By the way, twinset, I've never thought of you as malicious!!! What a crap thing to say. Sure, you say what you mean and you don't name-change but that's a good thing! I've never name-changed either, don't see the point, if people agree with me then great but if they don't, hey thats up to them.

mrsblanc · 17/02/2009 19:29

I am always that people are offended by these sort of comments from men/boys

SuperMario · 17/02/2009 19:33

I am always that women think men have the right to judge and comment all day long. Has anyone ever been to Norht africa where men grope and suck their teeth at women?

its HORRIBLE and demeaning and scary.

This is one step away fomr seeing women as commentable objects.

Claire236 · 17/02/2009 19:36

MILF is a modern slang way of saying you like the way someone looks. It's not like people are actually shouting 'I'd like to fuck you' in the street. I'm aware of what MILF stands for but think it's being taken rather too literally by some posters. If you don't like it fair enough but some of the comparisons being drawn on this thread are ridiculous.
