it's all about mens attitude to women lem...i remember walking with my dd and dc a few years ago..they were in the buggy..some idiot shouted out something like that to me...ffs i had 2 little kids with me...i just though ...you tosser...fuck off!

PollyFilla · 17/02/2009 08:31

Yes, it does matter. It matters to all of us who don't want teenage boys or men to think it's ok to shout out sexual comments to women in the street.

I don't want comments shouted at me or my daughters or my mother or my sister. I don't want this society to give the message to men that this is ok because, imo, it is not ok.

Magazines like Nuts and papers like The Sun
portray women as constantly sexually available. I, and many other women are not and don't want to be objectified in this way.

LoveMyLapTop · 17/02/2009 08:34

Oh Lord!
When said teenage boys ( and they looked like very nice teenagers not nasty 'hoodies' - but hey lets sstereotype teenage boys while we are at it! )
Shouted 'MILF' from behind their giggling hands - I personally did not find it intimidating or offensive
To my mind they were not implying that they were going to gang rape me, I just took it to mean they thought I was 'good looking'.
And it amused me that someone as old as me could still be attractive to someone as young as them.
I really should stop feeding here...

OP posts:
PollyFilla · 17/02/2009 08:36

It's not how they said it or how old they were or whether you liked it (which you did and I've said what I think about that earlier in the thread), it's about boys and men thinking it is ok to make comments like this.

LucyEllensmummy · 17/02/2009 08:37

lovemylaptop - i think you should then take it as a compliment and feel a bit smug about everyone being jealous Feed away, it gives people meaning to their lives

I have to say though, i totally agree about NUTS and the Sun. Different altogether though.

PollyFilla · 17/02/2009 08:40

Well, where do you think these teengage boys get the idea from that this is ok? Nuts, The Sun and all the societal stuff that shows women (all women) as constantly sexually available.

And if you're referring to me I'm not a troll (why would anyone say that about someone who is merely disagreeing with them?)

I didnt say anyone was a troll
when i said feeding I meant 'feeding the thread'
God put my foot in it every time.
Funnily enough when I posted on a thread about how depressing it was that mags like Nuts encouraged girls to aspire to be porn stars I was jumped on and hung up to dry for that too.
Seems you cant get it right on MN
( Or I cant anyway)

OP posts:
PollyFilla · 17/02/2009 08:45

Oh ok, sorry then, my misunderstanding LEM. I agree with you about Nuts etc and would have done had I seen the thread (I don't think I was on Mn at the time). Anyway, I have to go, train to catch!

daftpunk · 17/02/2009 08:52

people don't remember everything you post LMLT....just what you posted last.

let this die now...but learn from it, you are worth more than being leered at/shouted at...whatever.

and it's nothing to do with being jealous ....i sometimes wonder how old people are on here?

LucyEllensmummy · 17/02/2009 08:54

you hit the nail on the head there LMLT you can never get it right on AIBU - i have learnt not to take this topic seriously/personally. There are people who are going to disagree vehemently with what you say and AIBU is like a green light for a bitch fest. I honestly think you shouldn't take it to heart - I think i have been ripped to shreds on every AIBU post ive ever started.

I enjoy a good barny but used to get really upset but it in the past and it aint worth it - it ruins your day, and most of the other posters will have forgotten about it by tea time.

LoveMyLapTop · 17/02/2009 08:56

thanks dp
and some of the more intelligent comments have made me think about it a bit differently
some of them have made me think about MN a bit diferently too

waitng for thsi thread to shrivel up and drop off now

Oh dear i'm of the school of thought where its slightly embarassing to be whistled at by builders but its way more humiliating to be ignored by them . Of course that was back in the day when builders didn't get into trouble for whistling.

Last time some-one flirted/complimented me it was a 70+ year old in waitrose and even then i was flattered.

Perhaps i'm ignorant but i sort of thought that MILF was just the teenage way of speaking but doesn't actually mean what it says. Does that make sense - probably not at all. I guess that words like fuck just seem so commonplace today - they don't have the shock factor that they did 20 years ago. You only need to look at lots of threads on here to see how often the word is used.

Hope you feel better today laptop!

wotulookinat · 17/02/2009 09:22

LMLP, I agree with you! When I said about people wanting others to agree with them, I mean the people who were saying that you were being unreasonable, and then wouldn't drop it.
Don't dereg, just accept that there are a load of people up for a fight on MN, but you will always find one person who agrees with you, at least!
Twinset I'm glad it's not just me! I was very upset a couple of weeks ago (by one particular woman, who I shall not name!) and had a break before coming back. I thought I was being a right over-sensitive weirdo!

wotulookinat · 17/02/2009 09:23

I had a dream that a corpse was trying to touch me up last night and it was very freaky. I blame this thread...

LoveMyLapTop · 17/02/2009 09:27

sorry wot
got a bit fuddled

OP posts:
wotulookinat · 17/02/2009 09:34

That's ok. It's gets a bit confusing when lots of people are 'talking'.

MrsDanversAteMyIpod · 17/02/2009 09:45

Love LEM's post at 8.08. a woman's pride in her sexuality being at odds with her feminist leanings is a false dichotomy imo, why the denial with that part of yourself?

LMLT, everyone has had a least one flaming on aibu, should be called 'Am I being flaming unreasonable'. hope you are feeling better today tho

OrmIrian · 17/02/2009 09:55

"a woman's pride in her sexuality"

I know, I know..we're supposed to let it lie but....

Nowt wrong with having pride or enjoyment in your sexuality at all. But having someone shout dubious things at you in the street isn't about your sexuality is it? It's about how others see you and objectify your sexuality according to their desires.

LoveMyLapTop · 17/02/2009 09:55

Think I have had my MN Baptism of Fire!
Another day another bunfight!!
Might just observe today

I think its fab LMLT maybe your thread will go to 1000 posts and you'll have to start a new one good job some of us have a sense of pride in being chatted up by spotty teenagers humour

LucyEllensmummy · 17/02/2009 10:21

Orm, i am in the position of agreeing and disagreeing with you. I have to say, i certainly in my long and distant youth, used to dress fairly provocatively - i was inviting comments, knowingly and happily - it was just a laugh to me. But i do appreciate that not all the comments are nice - "look at the tits on that" and "corr, i'd give her one" are a bit cavemanish and wouldn't be likely to give the shouter ANY chance of ever giving me one, but i don't find it offensive. My retort to these sort of comments would be "in your dreams baby".

I think it is one of those things where it depends on the context and content of the comment. Being called a MILF by a group of giggling lads, id be secretly chuffed too, but of course would have to give an outward impression of "fuck off little boy, id eat you for my breakfast!"

cornsilk · 17/02/2009 11:36

Bluesapphire and LEM - do you have boys?

cornsilk · 17/02/2009 11:45

Sherbert lemon anyone? They're my favourite.
