Can you tell I dont watch the news?

OP posts:
grumblinalong · 21/01/2009 13:42

I think it is important and valid to know these things, other people do not. Who am I to judge what they should and shouldn't know? Our society promotes free will. The result of free will means some people are happier to live life uninformed and some people want to learn until the day they die.

OP has already said that she doesn't understand politics and doesn't enjoy watching the news. SUGGESTIONS on how she can access it for herself and her childrens sake, so she can understand and enjoy it are very helpful. Accusing someone of ignorance isn't IMHO.

Niecie · 21/01/2009 13:43

OK I get that you might not understand the ins and outs of world politics and you don't have time to keep up to date with the news. Odd but understandable. Not everybody does care.

What I don't get is how you can't know what he looks like. Don't you go out?!!

His face has been on newspapers for months you may not buy them but you must at least walk passed them. You only have to go into a supermarket and his book is on the shelves. There are pictures of him everywhere, even if it is only on tv programme trailers.

My 5 yr old knows who he is!

Do you go around with your head in a bag OP?

whoingodsnameami: I'm sure you are a decent person who cares about people. I think you've drifted into this situation perhaps since becoming a single mum. Sorry if we are sounding harsh.

As a few people have suggested, perhaps start small with the BBC headlines. Or try The Week? which is a summary of the week's news in the UK and around the world, though with a slight right-wing bias.

combustiblelemon · 21/01/2009 13:45

Everyone's being very mean. Maybe she works for Fox News.

grumblinalong · 21/01/2009 13:49

Strongly disagreeing with someone can be a bit more thought out than name calling calling and labelling their actions 'ignorant and disgusting' though can't it?

Sorry about that...I'm so annoyed I posted twice. Calling someone ignorant makes me so angry.

It might make you angry but teh OP is ignorant. That isn't name calling. You think I'm being rude no doubt, but if you said "Georgimama you are rude" that isn't name calling, it's describing an unpleasant attribute.

pagwatch · 21/01/2009 13:54

ROFL at combustiblelemon.
Perfect!

georgimama · 21/01/2009 13:54

Hear hear Hedgewitch!

CatIsSleepy · 21/01/2009 13:55

depends on your definition of ignorant, grumbling

if your definition is uninformed/unaware, then I'd say that was a description of the OP...

i agree, no need for name-calling though

as I've said, I'm more perplexed by this than anything else!

Niecie · 21/01/2009 13:56

Calling somebody ignorant isn't bad - it must means that you have a gap in your education.

Calling somebody stupid is far worse, because you are saying that they will never be able to learn.

I am ignorant of many things - the workings of the internal combustion engine for a start. I wouldn't think it was an insult is somebody called me ignorant about it. If I cared I would learn, if I didn't, thats up to me.

I don't think the OP should be afraid of being ignorant. She can change that if she feels the need.

CatIsSleepy · 21/01/2009 13:57

and ignorance can be easily remedied!

claw3 · 21/01/2009 14:02

I get the feeling the OP, is sitting back with a cuppa, watching everyone get their knickers in a twist and smiling LOL i know i am

CatIsSleepy · 21/01/2009 14:05

my knickers remain untwisted, claw, thanks...
they're just slightly confused

WilyWombat · 21/01/2009 14:06

I thought the OP was saying they couldnt understand the "Obama saviour of the universe" fever that seems to be prevalent at the minute which is how I feel

...im quite amazed anyone could manage to avoid "knowing" about him from TV/Radio/papers.

Gateau · 21/01/2009 14:10

Posts on AIBU threads that say: "So what, it's up to the OP, it's nothing to do with anyone else" are so boring and disposable.
That's the whole point of the AIBU threads, for people to tell the OP whether she/is being unreasonable or not.
Why are they on here? They just get in the way.

Cartoose · 21/01/2009 14:14

I'm sorry OP but I just don't believe you.

A great big

claw3 · 21/01/2009 14:21

Catissleepy - Glad to hear it, twisted knickers go right up your bum, very uncomfy

Sorry im having trouble taking this seriously.

WilyWombat · 21/01/2009 14:23

YANBU not to be swept up in the Obama fever

Personally whilst I dont like to dwell too much on the news (its so bloody depressing) I still like to have some basic knowledge of whats going on in the world.

mrshammond · 21/01/2009 14:31

This thread has made me seethe so much I can't even think of a reply except to agree with those early on who said no wonder the world is in the state it's in. This almost made me flounce!

claw3 · 21/01/2009 14:37

Mrshammond - Are you serious, seething?

Would hate to get into an arguement with you

runs very quickly off of thread!

MillyR · 21/01/2009 14:53

I read in the paper today that one quarter of the world's population watched the inauguration of Obama on tv, so I don't think there is any need to worry about the state of the world as a result of this thread.

I do think it is shocking that a literate person with internet access doesn't know, and doesn't really seem to care. I hope OP is just a troll.
