Can you tell I dont watch the news?

OP posts:
georgimama · 21/01/2009 11:47

I don't believe you that you don't know who Obama is, I just don't. Even if you never buy newspapers, you must walk past the newspaper stand in Tesco. He's been on the front page of nearly every newspaper several times a week for the last 12 months. You say you occasionally look at Sky News, he's probably been on their front page at least once a week for the last 12 months as well.

There is nothing clever about being this ignorant.

It's not a case of not knowing much about politics, you don't need to know about politics to have clocked the black guy (African American/mixed race however it is considered correct to describe his ethnic origin) whose image is everywhere standing in front a honking great big American flag, with the words "President of the United States of America" on the lecturn in front of him.

CatIsSleepy · 21/01/2009 11:47

the odd thing is, you say you have seen threads about obama
and so you are aware there is something important about him as his name is being bandied about on MN

but you still seem to have absolutely no curiosity about him

you have never been tempted to actually read one of those threads?

that's what I really don't get

so not only do you not know who Obama is, you really don't care either do you?
that's the weird part, for me

georgimama · 21/01/2009 11:47

And you clearly do think it's clever, to have put the big grin after your OP.

blueshoes · 21/01/2009 11:50

OP, why does working make a difference whether or not you are plugged into world news? If you weren't, that too would pass you by?

whoingodsnameami · 21/01/2009 11:52

my 17 month old was doing the same lionstar - although he says the obam bit - can pick his book out of a line up too - think he is quite a fan.

have you googled it yet, cause maybe this thread is a suggestion that it might be a good idea whoingodsname.

you may not get politics, but its quite simple to get the basics.

CatIsSleepy · 21/01/2009 11:53

if I didn't have much adult company I'd listen to the radio/read papers etc etc more not less

CatIsSleepy · 21/01/2009 11:54

LOL@ NJB
well that explains alot

Even though I am certain you're making this up, I am still getting wound up. I cannot understand how you can miss this.

I assume therefore that you are completely unaware of the fact that there is currently a big war going on in the middle east?

You must be the most unobservant person on the planet. Being shy is bollocks - shy people still overhear conversations, spot newspaper headlines in the shops etc. If you have children, I feel for them because clearly they're not exactly getting exposure to the world around them.

Winebeforepearls · 21/01/2009 12:01

OP, if you are for real, you've quite reasonably had a flaming.

Could you perhaps have a late new year's resolution and have BBC News as your homepage? Their website also has very good potted histories of almost every news story, so you can read up on the last few years ...

blueshoes · 21/01/2009 12:03

OP, not going out or having adult company is a poor excuse. You do know that. As others have said, if you have internet and TV, you can get the news, if you were interested.

Could you be depressed?

Total rubbish.

No way you couldn't know who Obama is.

And no way you should be proud of this fact either.

What an example to set.

In answer to the op, no you are not being unreasonable not to know who he is. Why should anyone else care what you know and what you dont.

If you want to avoid any news, thats your business.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 21/01/2009 12:27

Last April my mum asked dd who was then 8 who Obama is. dd said very seriously 'The next President of America'
My dd brainwashed - nah!....

georgimama · 21/01/2009 12:35

Then why post about it here, claw3?

I care because the OP has a vote which is worth exactly the same as mine, and if this is typical of her level of engagement in the world around her, I shudder for democracy.

grumblinalong · 21/01/2009 12:41

Although being so out of touch with current affairs, politics and society as whole seems totally alien to me I do think that the flaming is unfair.

It's the OP's choice to be uninformed, if she is making an effort to AVOID this information (which she must be) then that is her choice. Just because she approaches life from a different angle to the average MN's doesn't mean she is in the wrong.

georgimama · 21/01/2009 12:43

But why ask us what we think of this conscious choice then? And why act proud of it?
