AIBU to expect a supermarket checkout person to know what an aubergine is?

That it is a VEGETABLE and that it starts with an A?

I mean... ok, perhaps you might not know what an aubergine is, but her next question (whilst holding it) was "is it a vegetable?"! No, it's a type of biscuit!

She then said she couldn't deal with it as it didn't have a barcode. When I suggested that she weighed it and told the till what it was, she looked under 'O' in the list of vegetables.

AAAAARRRRRGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHH

I had a checkout operator ask if my fresh ginger was garlic once! Bless her it's not her fault if she's not familiar with it

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 17/01/2009 22:27

were you in Aldi?

I never have a problem, but then I shop in Waitrose

thomsc · 17/01/2009 22:28

True. I can just about get over not knowing what an aubergine is but to wonder if it might possibly be a vegetable? What does it look/feel like? Bread? A newspaper? Fish?

pamplemousse · 17/01/2009 22:32

I had someone work with me in a veg shop who seriously didn't know what a courgette was, avocado had him very puzzled, three different types of cabbage and a celeriac had him in palpitations, bless.

Amapoleon · 17/01/2009 22:34

I used to work in Asda when I was at uni and one day a very patronising woman asked me very slowly " Do you have any au ber gines ?"

Sorry nothing to do with your story but just made me think of mine.

moondog · 17/01/2009 22:35

lmao at looking under 'o'.

curlygal · 17/01/2009 22:37

When I worked in safeway when I was at school we had to do "produce tests" as part of our training.

The supervisor woul;d select a basket of items and you had to recognise them - down to specific types of apples etc.

That is poor staff training!

Mind you my three year old knows what an aubergene is and probably would know that it would start with an a not an o........

Oh go on, laugh - I don't care.

WilfSell · 17/01/2009 22:42

Unusual to find myself agreeing with hedgewitch but don't be such a snob. Comedy value, yes; not general sneering nastiness though.

People are different. Some people eat different stuff.

moondog · 17/01/2009 22:42

And orthographically it's 'a'.

curlygal · 17/01/2009 22:43

Yes it was indeed Mawbroon.

I still know my sharon friut from my starfruit which has set up my very well in life!

stillenacht · 17/01/2009 22:44

scottishmummy - i agree

pamplemousse · 17/01/2009 22:44

TPHW there is a difference between not knowing a dragonfruit or a kumquat, but an avocado?! Not being a snob, just that epople of 18 years old haven't ever come across several types of veg!

mawbroon · 17/01/2009 22:47

I wonder if I know you then Curlygal? Perhaps I tested you on the produce.

I worked in the Morningside one from about 1995 to 1997.
