That it is a VEGETABLE and that it starts with an A?

I mean... ok, perhaps you might not know what an aubergine is, but her next question (whilst holding it) was "is it a vegetable?"! No, it's a type of biscuit!

She then said she couldn't deal with it as it didn't have a barcode. When I suggested that she weighed it and told the till what it was, she looked under 'O' in the list of vegetables.

AAAAARRRRRGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHH

ladyjuliafish · 17/01/2009 22:58

I get turnips and swedes mixed up . Richard Curtis thought that parsnips were turnips hence all the turnip jokes in Blackadder.

SlartyBartFast · 17/01/2009 22:59

neeps,
is that parsneeps or turneeps??

mawbroon · 17/01/2009 23:00

neeps are turnips here. Turnips as in Scottish turnips, but known as Swedes elsewhere.

I think it comes for the Gaelic word "sneep" IIRC

ScottishMummy · 17/01/2009 23:01

Beef tomatoes in uk are yuk.

ladyjuliafish · 17/01/2009 23:05

I feel a bit less stupid now. I'm Geordie and gps were Scottish so I think I am entitled to call a swede a turnip. I didn't know other people called them swedes until I moved south.

SlartyBartFast · 17/01/2009 23:05

i roast beef tomatoes,whole , only way i think.
no idea about pamplemouse

mawbroon · 17/01/2009 23:06

Yes, so there can be genuine confusion at the checkouts.

When I worked in Safeway, the checkout operators often put through what we call turnips as turnips on the list, when in fact they should have put in the code for swedes. The wee baby turnip things which should go through as turnips, were much more expensive, so I had to refund umpteen people when their neep was costing them £2 or so instead of a few pence!!

I don't blame the checkout staff for getting it wrong.

Who on earth would call a turnip a swede for goodness sake

expatinscotland · 17/01/2009 23:06

a pamplemousse is a grapefruit

WilfSell · 17/01/2009 23:06
