AIBU to expect a supermarket checkout person to know what an aubergine is?

That it is a VEGETABLE and that it starts with an A?

I mean... ok, perhaps you might not know what an aubergine is, but her next question (whilst holding it) was "is it a vegetable?"! No, it's a type of biscuit!

She then said she couldn't deal with it as it didn't have a barcode. When I suggested that she weighed it and told the till what it was, she looked under 'O' in the list of vegetables.

AAAAARRRRRGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHH

aye had a cookery book and she kept chirruping on out eggplant.i was bamboozled initially

moondog · 17/01/2009 22:48

I rather think you people are the ones who detect snobbiness. It is amusing, that's all.
God, thousands of people can't read or write properly. I've just spent the last 2 days slaving over MSc Lit. review on very topic.

WilfSell · 17/01/2009 22:48

Suspect it is actually a fruit anyhow. Strictly speaking.

expatinscotland · 17/01/2009 22:48

they're not fresh here and they all taste vile.

expatinscotland · 17/01/2009 22:49

the pamplemousses here suck as well. they are not fresh and they taste too bitter and sour.

Seriously, not a snob. I live in ever so multi-cultural Brixton where an aubergine is probably the least exotic of available vegetables.

I did not think of her as a 'gerl' not refer to her as one. She's over 16 and works in a shop that sells aubergines. It's hardly an unusual vegetable.

I'm not aghast at her on a snob level, but on a 'what are young(er) people learning about food?' level.

expatinscotland · 17/01/2009 22:51

they are not worth eating here, i can promise you.

yuk. all old and bitter-tasting and dried out.

it's an insult to aubergines.

moondog · 17/01/2009 22:52

There may be a palce for sight words with regards to veggies perhaps, yes.

Not a wee brag at all. Very dull to be incarcerated all Friday night and all Saturday.

mawbroon · 17/01/2009 22:52

Most of the tomatoes you buy in the supermarkets here are horrible.

I didn't realise this until I grew my own and found out what tomatoes are supposed to taste like!

ScottishMummy · 17/01/2009 22:56

my mum wouldn't know an aubergine if it got up and stoated her.literally and metaphorically.

as an aside were i grew up aubergine might as well be moonrock.not easily recognised and most unusual

SlartyBartFast · 17/01/2009 22:57

aubergines look lovely, all shiney, but i dont like the taste

expatinscotland · 17/01/2009 22:57
