I am.. I know I am.. It's mean..

But I have compiled a list of high street stores that will go bust before 31st January and now feel compelled to see if I can shout HOUSE before anyone else...

Aha, paid by credit card! I always pay by credit card for large purchases.

However, the cost of the ED xtra card was only £30, its not that that's bothering me, its the loss of the extra 3 years warranty that is really the loss. I wonder if a warranty company has that liability?

MumHadEnough · 22/01/2009 23:38

You know what, now I've had time to think about it, my lost 3 year warranty pales into insignificance when I've had time to consider the people who have lost their jobs and people who won't ever receive their appliances.

In reading the money saving expert forum there are a hell of a lot of people out there affected by this much more than me .

One thing that is worry me though, and I don't know if there's anyone out there knows anything about Store Cards, is;

I've just ordered a kitchen from homebase, its due to be delivered on 26th February. Its been paid for on my homebase card on 12 months interest free. The homebase card I believe is run by GE Capital.

IF homebase were to go under before I received my kitchen, would I stil be liable for the payments even though I've not received the goods.

Its puzzling me this one, as its not technically a credit card!

Thanks to anyone who can give advice.

EldonAve · 23/01/2009 10:53

if they don't provide the goods then they can't force you to pay

Honneybunny · 25/01/2009 10:32

Mum, we also ordered from Empire Direct: over christmas both our washing machine and dishwasher broke, and we bought both from ED with the same xtra card warranty.

Fortunately, we had both delivered before they went under... Sadly we recommended them to one of our colleagues, and they went and bought a TV of them on a (VISA) debit card. They have paid but not received TV. They are supposed to get the money back through chargeback scheme, but Lloyds are being difficult.

Anyone any advice for them, as i feel awful (feel bit responsible for their trouble, as it was me who recommended ED)?

MumHadEnough · 25/01/2009 20:13

Hi Honneybunny, they should definitely do chargeback under the visa scheme. There is some info from the administrators for people who paid with visa debit card here. There is also loads of info on moneysavingexpert.com regarding this.

Try not to feel too bad, it could have happened to anyone, its not as if you knew they were going under! I very nearly ordered a plasma telly from them on Monday morning myself! Thank God I changed my mind and got it from Littlewoods instead.

Regarding my other query about Homebase, I phoned them and just asked them directly. I spoke to 6 different people and not one could answer my question. All they kept saying was "we're not going to go into administration" and I kept replying "you can't possibly know that". I have asked for a copy of my credit agreement to see what it says in there. I mean surely I'm not the first person who's been thinking about this!

MumHadEnough · 26/01/2009 23:11

Barratts & Priceless shoes have now called in the administrators too.

As per my post re homebase, they've just announced 300 job cuts

EldonAve · 28/01/2009 10:35

Our local nice burger place has just closed (other branches still operating)

FAQtothefuture · 28/01/2009 10:36

on of the pubs in our town has closed, was quite a popular one, it's sat there bar stools left from their last night open, glasses on tables, very odd

ForeverOptimistic · 28/01/2009 10:36

I'm not surprised Homebase are struggling, their shelves are empty!

EldonAve · 03/03/2009 07:28

So Shoe Studio & Principles are now in administration

SalopianGirl · 06/03/2009 13:37

Just seen on Sky news that majority of Principles stores are set to close as a buyer has not been found!
Sob - Love their petite range!

I know this is an old thread but wondered if there were any current contenders

I don't want to get stuck having bought gift vouchers that won't be honoured

bunjies · 09/12/2009 17:22

Well, the Borders prediction came true.

IneedacleanerIamalazyslattern · 09/12/2009 17:39

I was reading through it Eldon and it's funny there was a bit of disagreement about Borders some people saying it will go some people saying it won't.
Rather interesting to read over it actually seeing what people thought.

EldonAve · 09/12/2009 17:42

I'm wondering about LK Bennett
Sale has started already with big reductions

GroundHoHoHogs · 09/12/2009 17:59

I was shocked at Wine Rack going down this week...

EldonAve · 09/12/2009 22:35

I didn't realise Tootsies, Dexters & GBK were also in trouble

mumhadenough · 30/12/2009 22:41

Lots of Matalans with loads of stuff being sold off for £2!!! is this a sign something is up, or are they just having a HUGE sale?

Meglet · 30/12/2009 22:46

Matalan doesn't impress me when I go in there. And I can't believe how LK Bennet keeps going, ours always has a sale on and is still empty.

andirobobo · 30/12/2009 22:49

Matalan do that most years - selling off stock for £1 IIRC from the last few years. I remember this thread from last year and it is interesting to see what was said at the time!

Our WHSmiths must be losing money as they cram the aisles with so much tat that I (and presumably anyone with a pushchair) avoids it like the plague.

bramblebooks · 30/12/2009 23:00

blacks went a month or so ago, second coming

WidowWadman · 30/12/2009 23:06

I only noticed today that Blacks went. I'm still sad about Borders. I loved our local Borders.
