I am.. I know I am.. It's mean..

But I have compiled a list of high street stores that will go bust before 31st January and now feel compelled to see if I can shout HOUSE before anyone else...

I think clothes type retailers are more at risk than food stores, so Greggs is probably safe till about March!

Nancy you are very knowledgable!

nancy75 · 29/12/2008 21:43

mk one has already gone into administration and been bought out with about half shops closed and the other half kept open

CrackopentheBaileys · 29/12/2008 21:44

see

nancy75 · 29/12/2008 21:44

i have worked in retail (both shop floor and h/o roles) for years, fortunately am sahm now, but still read lots of the trade stuff!

Hassled · 29/12/2008 21:44

The Pier was easy cannon fodder, though - a shop entirely dedicated to stuff we want but don't actually need. Ditto Whittards. But we're always going to need clothes, toiletries etc. It's the shops for strictly non-essentials which will be the first to go - for example, we're not badly off but I'm still not going to be buying posh mugs or scented candles any time soon.

On the basis of which, I'm going for Habitat.

nancy75 · 29/12/2008 21:45

need to get a hobby really

MaryMotherOfCheeses · 29/12/2008 21:45

Now, are we just naming high street chains or is there any theory in this?

Cos surely the safest ones are stores which are part of larger groups?

CrackopentheBaileys · 29/12/2008 21:46

Oooh on that basis Hassled I'm going for Comet......

MaryMotherOfCheeses · 29/12/2008 21:46

Noooooooo not Habitat Nooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!

CrackopentheBaileys · 29/12/2008 21:46

MN is a great hobby

TheSeriousSanta · 29/12/2008 21:47

I don't think there are any rules...

But, I think High Street Chains are actually most at risk, because in most instances, they don't own the stores and therefore have HUGE rents to pay.

JJB sports is top of my list,
with etam,
Jessops
Officers club
superdrug
and wh smiths

though I feel very sad for the people working there, tbh they have all in the main been poorly managed for years

TheSeriousSanta · 29/12/2008 21:49

ANy store offering unbelieveable sales NOW is at risk, IMHO.

They are desperate to turn stock into cash... which means cash flow is a problem, which means paying the rent might be difficult - which means the administration man is knocking on the door....

Borders won't go, it's always heaving in there. It'll be the shops you never go into because they're somehow pointless and a bit wrong.

WH Smith has to be a good candidate on that criterion. I mean, what is the point of Smiths these days? Do they even know themselves?

Robert Dyas has that tumbleweedy feel to it as well. Mothercare was in deep shit a few years ago and scaled back massively so probably safer than some others.

llareggub · 29/12/2008 21:51

I don't want Laura Ashley to go but their online service is shite. I'll miss their shops if they do go.

I simply cannot believe that M&S will go. No way.

saffy202 · 29/12/2008 21:51

I'm going to say
Oasis
Jane Norman
Karen Millen
BHS
Coast
Currys

ThornyRose · 29/12/2008 21:52

Officers club has already gone into admin I think.

JJB shut 2 shops in my area so are probably in trouble.

WH have the PO now so that might save them.

ChasingSquirrels · 29/12/2008 21:52

on anglia news on Sat when they did the bit about the Wollies branch closing they mentioned something about the Officers Club which is a few stores down.

Indep car dealers are really struggling atm.

nancy75 · 29/12/2008 21:52

if m&s close i think the country is in a far worse state than anybody is letting on!

Hulababy · 29/12/2008 21:53

TBH a lot of the ones that have already gone aren;t that big a suprise. Many were in trouble for months before this and sadly some have been affected because of other places going into administration who supply to them.

frogs · 29/12/2008 21:53

There's definitely room for a bit of a clearout in the Currys/Comet end of things. Specially now you can order so much of this stuff online.

MsG · 29/12/2008 21:54

I think Borders will go rather than Waterstones. I seriously doubt M&S will go. They were in big trouble a few years ago, weren't they, but I think they're ok now.

TheSeriousSanta · 29/12/2008 21:54

Nancy - believe me, the country is in a far worse state than anyone is letting on.

That is one thing I can say for sure.

Not one query about that one.

angelene · 29/12/2008 21:55

WH Smiths is very similar to Woolies, in that other people do what they did originally much better, they have tried to do a bit of this, a bit of that but all a bit half-arsed really. Can't see it surviving.

I think there are too many budget end clothes chains all trying to do the same thing and Mk One has much less big backing than the likes of Primark and H&M; at the other end of the scale French Connection has been in trouble for ages and is over-priced for what it is, surely can't make it.
