I am.. I know I am.. It's mean..

But I have compiled a list of high street stores that will go bust before 31st January and now feel compelled to see if I can shout HOUSE before anyone else...

Boots might not be that stable - they have been cutting back for a long time now, and closing some of their separate optician outlets, bringing them back into Boots the Chemist, in order to save money.

LIZS · 06/01/2009 18:03

I wonder about GLTC too.

KingHerodNametaken · 07/01/2009 14:34

Viyella clothing firm just gone into administration

Why so many clothes shops and high street shops?

BoffinMum · 07/01/2009 14:47

Because the fact they sold merchandise was secondary to the fact they were really uber-commodities in their own right. People made more money buying and selling them as businesses than from the actually core business itself. So they were all mired in debt and money was only to be made by refinancing continually. That's my theory, anyway.

BoffinMum · 07/01/2009 14:47

I meant actually from the core business itself but I have one eye on the telly while typing!

ComeOVeneer · 07/01/2009 14:49

DH reckons the list is going to be huge. He is an insolvency lawyer.

LIZS · 07/01/2009 14:53

I'm sure Viyella has been in administration before and was bought out. Over expansion , insufficient product differentiation, less design led and more expensive than some of the high street retailers relying instead on traditionally loyal customers and probably dependent on Far East manufacturers so will be hit by exchange rate.

Tinker · 07/01/2009 14:55

JJB Sports has been in trouble for ages though. I suspect a lot of these businesses have been limping along for a while and this is teh final straw

Frizbe · 07/01/2009 20:09

see M&S food are closing a lot of stores, just on the news main business is ok tho.

weirdbird · 07/01/2009 23:29

Well Blooming Marvellous have officially called in the administrators

BEAUTlFUL · 08/01/2009 00:09

BOOTS. CANNOT. GO. It's my favourite shop and I have £15 on my advantage card!

thumbwitch · 08/01/2009 00:15

I went into my local Blooming Marvellous yesterday to see if they were having a closing down sale (bit prem, I know) and there was no sign of anythign so I said to the staff "has the report of your shop going into administration been exaggerated then?"
They looked a bit shocked and said "where did you hear about it?"
News, MN - they didn't know for sure themselves but of course were concerned.

They didn't have nearly enough stuff in the sale...

thumbwitch · 08/01/2009 00:16

Hello Beautiful! How was your Stepford Christmas?

differentID · 08/01/2009 00:17

so they didn't actually get told by their head ofice for definite? that's awful!

BEAUTlFUL · 08/01/2009 00:19

Hi Thumbwitch! You lot had put me off Stepfording, so it was just OK. I miss it though! so am considering going back onto a self-tailored version. (All the same, except the cleaning bit.)

thumbwitch · 08/01/2009 00:19

not obviously, no. in fact the woman I spoke to wrote "mumsnet" on the back of her hand, like she was going to go and look it up to see what was being said here.
Rude, innit.

BEAUTlFUL · 08/01/2009 00:22

will subway go? I have a creepy feeling every time I see that chain, because someone I knew years ago once clutched my arm and said, dramatically, "Never eat at Subway. Swear to me that you never, ever will. The things I have seen... " They'd just finished a summer job there...

differentID · 08/01/2009 00:22

that's horrendous. THe company I work for makes all financial details available to most staff, and if, like me you're a nosy wench, you find out a lot of juicy gossip just by looking through piles of paperwork.

simpson · 08/01/2009 00:24

Didn't the woolies staff here about their company going into administration on the radio?

Our local card factory is closing down so maybe they are in trouble...

Hope Boots not in trouble like beautiful I have about £10 on Boots card.

Went into Adams yesterday and they didn't seem to have much on sale apart from newborn stuff

differentID · 08/01/2009 00:26

The Adams where I live was open saturday morning as usual, by 2 o'clock in the afternoon it was closed and stripped of stock which is all waiting to be collected in plastiuc bags on the shop floor.

simpson · 08/01/2009 00:27

Beautiful - you must be psychic LOL!!

I went past subway today on bus at peak time ie in lunch break time for offices etc and they were dead and I thought to myself they might struggle!!

thumbwitch · 08/01/2009 00:36

Beautiful, that's a bit like Ginster's pasties - I have never touched them since I had a lodger who worked there in his school holidays - the things he told me!!

I never got a chance to get to an Adams - the only one I knew about closed before I knew they had gone into admin as well.

This is getting ridiculous...

lostinfrance - if you read the first few posts in the thread you'll see that the person who started it has already lost her job, and a few others who have joined in too have either lost theirs, are at risk of doing so.

I believe it's called black humour.
