I am.. I know I am.. It's mean..

But I have compiled a list of high street stores that will go bust before 31st January and now feel compelled to see if I can shout HOUSE before anyone else...

OP posts:
GypsyMoth · 10/01/2009 13:27

our local subway has GONE....just disappeared. noticed the other day...its a barbers shop now.

Adams.....gone,and its about 5 doors down from woolworths,so not looking good on our stret.

noticed 2 small card shops gone, and a few small indian own shops going too. they sell lots of house stuff and clothing....my mum used to buy sari material there to make her ballroom dance dresses years ago,so felt sad to see them go too.

kiddiz · 10/01/2009 13:51

Agree lostinfrance. Ok op might have losr her job but speculating about other's misfortune is not excused by that.
My dh is about to lose his job but that doesn't mean I will be on here next week speculating about others about to join him on the dole.
So in answer to op yes yabu ...Getting entertainment from other's misfortune is at best poor taste and at worst cruel.

GypsyMoth · 10/01/2009 13:54

which kind of jobs/businesses are actually "safe"?

kettlechip · 10/01/2009 20:34

Brie - CAB workers, Job Centre workers, Samaritans, accountants, doctors, solicitors and pharmacists off the top of my head..

It's a sorry state of affairs really. Very sad, I will really miss shops like The Pier. Our local high street is decimated already, it's not an affluent town and without Woolworths (the biggest store on the high street) there's only a Boots, WHSmith and various low end shops to fill up space.

Eddas · 10/01/2009 20:45

i'd take accountants off the 'safe' list. I work in a firm and they've laid of a junior this week. People forget that as self employed people go under, accountants get less work so we are infact affected (or is that effected I alwyas get it wrong) 'we'(accountants) may not feel the true implications for a while as businesses slowly start to go under, but it will undoubtedly affect us

teachers are likely to be unaffected, and agree with the others listed, but anyone realted to retail/construction/housing is likely to be IMO along with many others it's gonna be a hard few years

IdrisTheDragon · 10/01/2009 20:49

Card Warehouse/Cardfair have gone into administration.

The part of our local town that had Woolies is getting emptier by the day - it had Woolies, Card Warehouse and M&S Simply Food (which is one of the ones going).

kettlechip · 11/01/2009 21:10

Good point Eddas - DH even owns an accountancy practice - at this time of year it's manic and he's there working right now, but he's had a few clients go bust so that's bound to have a knock on effect later in the year. I guess nobody working in the private sector is really very safe..

ohdearwhatamess · 11/01/2009 21:21

I'd take solicitors off the safe list too. Dh (partner in city law firm) is shortly to have to make the horrible decision about which of his assistants to make redundant.

nymphadora · 11/01/2009 21:46

' Safe ' jobs, education, social care, health,

police, prisons, probation (crime rates increse in recession) dp 'jokes' I am in a growth industry working with young offenders

Tillyscoutsmum · 11/01/2009 21:51

Subway are all franchises - so, whilst some may go, the company will continue trading (they are a HUGE US company)

There are 40-50 retailers who are planning to go into administration within the next few weeks. Most of them will use it to drop their unprofitable stores and will then set up a new company and retain their profitable ones (so not all the jobs will go).

Me and dh are retail surveyors and are really struggling atm

IdrisTheDragon · 11/01/2009 22:38

I wouldn't say accountants are safe - the firm I used to work for has about 250 people at risk of redundancy.

frogs · 11/01/2009 22:40

Insolvency lawyers should be a pretty safe bet. Bit of a bummer if you specialise in conveyancing though.

ChasingSquirrels · 11/01/2009 22:40

agree that accountants aren't safe (despite someone saying they were further down and me smiling about it).
Most accy practices will be safe though, as practices. What they will probably do is shed staff.

Tinker · 11/01/2009 22:46

Being a funeral director would be pretty safe

thornyrose · 11/01/2009 22:55

I agree with lostinfrance and kiddiz. I think the OP is being unreasonable and a bit biazaree for even wanting to specualte on this.

I havent read anything in this thread which resembles 'black humour' either

GypsyMoth · 12/01/2009 17:20

world of leather went into administration today....heard on lunchtime news...

nametaken · 12/01/2009 17:22

ssd · 12/01/2009 17:24

Viyella in administration too

GypsyMoth · 12/01/2009 17:26

wow....it seems to be a monday thing!!

Deemented · 13/01/2009 08:57

R.I.P. Crispy Pancakes.....

FAQtothefuture · 13/01/2009 09:02

actually I think that the thread evolved very quickly in a serious discussion about which companies were at risk and why rather than the "bingo" that it was started as.

I read this last night and felt so for those workers.

Awful for anyone losing their job in the current climate, but to find out like that with no notice at all must be even worse.

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 13/01/2009 10:01

Habitat have been in trouble for a while

www.housewareslive.net/news/news.asp?id=5247&title=Habitat+store+closures+continue

Jessops, JD sports and John Lewis all had boosted sales over christmas so hopefully will continue to do well.

Muji is doing well too (thank god!)

Tinker · 13/01/2009 17:55

Habitat are owned by IKEA, don't know if that'll make a difference?

MumHadEnough · 22/01/2009 22:30

Empire Direct have gone under . Bit peed off as I paid extra for their membership card which gave me an extra 3 years warranty on an appliance I bought, I haven't even installed the bloody thing yet. Wonder if I should contact the administrators?

I suppose I should contact myself extremely lucky that I have received my appliances. I'm sure there are many people out there who have paid and haven't got theirs.

EldonAve · 22/01/2009 22:38

how did you pay?
