I am.. I know I am.. It's mean..

But I have compiled a list of high street stores that will go bust before 31st January and now feel compelled to see if I can shout HOUSE before anyone else...

Apparently BAY (clothes shop) are going too.

EachPeachPearMum · 31/12/2008 20:09

Boots are enormous, and global, so doubt they won't survive.
PC world and Staples (and GAP and Pizza Hut) are all US owned- and they are huge brands over there so doubt they will go under, though they may pull out of UK of course, though unlikely for Gap.
Pizza Hut were already struggling over here recently- probably because of healthier lifestyles, and they have changed their menu quote a bit over past 6 months, presumably to try and keep some of their market share. I should imagine Nando's rapid expansion has also hit them hard, as they are similar price level/clientele yet Nando's is seen as 'healthy' food and they aren't.

WHS has a large online trade, and they also supply to commercial office stationery to many firms so maybe they will scale back high st presence, but survive.

House of Fraser have been dire for past few years, can't really see them surviving a major downturn- yes JL do what they do much better. Their stores are shockingly shabby looking, even before the 'credit crunch' started.

juneybean · 31/12/2008 21:07

Has anyone said Au Naturale?

TWINSETinapeartree · 31/12/2008 21:30

USC have gone, again that upper middle market.

snoopdog · 31/12/2008 22:07

i think au natural have gone already (of sorts)

ratners and the likes next,

property dealers (as yet unmentioned on here)

agree jjb sports wear and equipment,

up market clothes shops (jigsaw, coast, monsoon, laura ashley)

music retailers (hmv, virgin, any cd suppliers)

agree, smiths (nothing anyone else doesnt do)

pier, coffee mug makers, 'fussy bits' shops no one really needs but buys, bhs, tammy girl, mark one, some 'card shops' comet/currys/pc world, maybe one of them,

it is depressing...

goldFAQinsenceandmyrrh · 31/12/2008 22:11

goldFAQinsenceandmyrrh · 31/12/2008 22:46

good - I'm crap at thankyou letters so thought an email was the safest way of making sure I not only write it but sent it

scrooged · 31/12/2008 22:47

Has anyone suggested Lakeland? very exensive IMO.

BexieID · 31/12/2008 23:39

I hate the thought of even more empty shops and people out of jobs. There are alot of places I don't shop in, so wouldn't be bothered if those went. I do hope Jessops doesn't go as I'm saving up for some studio lighting equipment and just love the smell of the shop!

Katiestar · 31/12/2008 23:41

Better than 'dead pool'

scrooged · 31/12/2008 23:51

They will be shops that target the rich and the wreckless.

I feel so sorry for the staff. What a start to the new year.

gagamama · 01/01/2009 17:31

WHSmith
Rymans
La Senza
Staples
Mk One
New Look
Peacocks
Bhs
Superdrug
Flight Centre
Blacks
Madhouse
Game

Anyway, YANBU. Of course it's distressing to those employed by these companies and their families, but by identifying the companies at risk I don't really see how this is in any way contributing to their demise.

weirdbird · 01/01/2009 21:13

Is blooming marvellous going under?

I knew they had bad debt problems, and there website has been offline the last 48hrs....

llareggub · 01/01/2009 21:15

Blooming Marvellous has been down for days. Much longer than 48 hours.

weirdbird · 01/01/2009 21:20

Had only been looking the last couple of days, as I wanted to get a gift for a friend thats expecting

spicemonster · 01/01/2009 21:28

WHSmiths won't go under because the bulk of their operations is distribution of mags and newspapers. Having said that, they could wind up the retail operations.

I predict some windy abandoned high streets in the near future ...

jojosmaman · 01/01/2009 21:31

Kate Kuba gone into administration yesterday according to Drapers.

TheOtherMaryPoppinsDiets · 01/01/2009 21:32

RIP The Pier

jojosmaman · 01/01/2009 21:35

Very sad to see it like that MaryPoppins, seems more real when you see the administrators details. I remember feeling the same about Ilva

simpson · 01/01/2009 21:54

Blooming marvelous site has been down for ages. I had an email from them saying their site was down for renovation work but that was ages ago

When i tried to buy some stuff before Christmas (early November TBH) everything I wanted to buy was out of stock

Think Rymans could be in trouble too. There are hardly any branches left as it is...

llareggub · 01/01/2009 21:55

Our local Blooming Marvellous store is pretty quiet too.

EachPeachPearMum · 01/01/2009 22:04

yy- Blooming Marvellous site been down for about 2 weeks- and I need feeding bras too
There was loads of stuff in the 'sale' back in early/mid december.
Can't see people like monsoon surviving either, but I would have thought cheaper stores like Superdrug would do better, as they are cheaper than Boots, yet sell identical brands.

Re La Senza- someone said earlier that lingerie sales do well in a recession due to people having to stay in and make their own entertainment

I think places like the Gadget store don't have much chance, and whilst mobile 'phone shops proliferate at the moment, I think perhaps some will consolidate/merge companies as there are really far to many at present despite the huge demand for services.

goldFAQinsenceandmyrrh · 01/01/2009 22:05

our Boots and Superdrug are next door to each other, Boots is always heaving, Superdrug always empty.

simpson · 01/01/2009 22:08

Think Superdrug tried to go a bit up market and failed massively

My mind has gone totally blank but sure superdrug own the really cheap chemist on the high Street now...

When our superdrug had its face lift I was in there looking for baby food (which they don't sell anymore!!) and there were loads of suits from their H/O taking pics etc and in all seriousness comparing it to Harrods
