to think that teachers are allowed to actually have a life

Another post is getting on my nerves a bit - i hate the fact that because of our jobs (vocation whatever...) we have to be society's keepers and society's bitch. It truly pisses me off.

I think teachers are great. They work blardy hard and I couldn't do it,especially secondary teaching in a "failing" school.

so in summation YANBU

Have a good Christmas break and lay off the marking/lesson prep/curriculum development or whatnot

sleepyeyes · 17/12/2008 20:52

I would love to be a teacher, I'm worried my spelling isn't good enough but to be honest I'm not sure my halo is bright enough.

sleepyeyes · 17/12/2008 20:53

I meant my halo ISN'T bright enough.

stillenacht · 17/12/2008 20:54

I agree. I am very lucky as my job is lovely but DH has worked in a few 'sink' schools and it kills you inside - it eats you up - physically, mentally - they are saints the teachers in those schools.

Yes but people moan about all jobs which involve working with the public. Doctor's receptionists, checkout staff etc.

OhLITTLEFISHofBethlehem · 17/12/2008 20:58

I agree Stillenacht! The threads that really piss me off are the "my dc's teacher has been away for 2 weeks with a "cold". I don't think they really have a cold so I'm going to complain to the headteacher".

Mind your own bl**dy business.

Sorry - makes me cross as you can see.

LiffeyCanSpellGeansaiNollaig · 17/12/2008 20:58

OH FOR GOD'S sake. You don't have to be society's keeper. But teachers with a really good attitude to their job probably wouldn't want to smoke right outside the schoolgates. In every profession there are jobsworths who don't give a shit and just bank the cheque and there are people who have a really great attitude.

Can you TELL the difference?

Baysmum · 17/12/2008 20:58

AAAH, was just about to say the same thing myself! I work in a failing primary school at the moment where teachers are blamed for everything - obviously we cant upset the clients (parents) as we need to keep buns on seats for the sake of budget for next year. Never mind that our attendance is crap, or that kids dont eat/sleep properly. OBVIOUSLY its poor teaching!

eekareindeer · 17/12/2008 20:59

Generally speaking I love teachers (some of my best friends are! etc). Well done you all. I know I could never do it because quite frankly I couldn't face the amount of hard work.

But still would prefer not to see teachers smoking outside their/my local primary school .

LiffeyCanSpellGeansaiNollaig · 17/12/2008 20:59

Baysmum, this is a thread to bitch about another thread.

lil · 17/12/2008 20:59

YANBU, if you see how many posts on here are from mums griping about something singularly unimportant - and yet they turn it into something that will certainly scar their child for life at the very least. MN is a reflection of teaching these days its parents hovering in the background, super quick to tell you (or more likely your boss) that you're not treating their precious little Johnny exactly how they want, and they ignore the fact teachers have teaching qualifications!!!.

Grrrr....what other professional gets so maligned? I can't think of any!!!!

...phew thanks for the rant Stillenacht -

Baysmum · 17/12/2008 20:59

I meant same thing as OP not Liffeywhatever!

laweaselmys · 17/12/2008 21:00

It doesn't seem to be the first solution to all societies problems 'ah - we'll teach them ethics at SCHOOL' it's very odd. As though nobody else is responsible for setting a good example except teachers and childcare providers...

Mind you, I'm feeling sympathetic because I have a whole EYFS thing going on tomorrow, and I'm wondering what the hell reception teachers do about observations etc, when they're probably a bit busy teaching the kids how to read and write.

I think c4 need to rerun teachers again!

lil · 17/12/2008 21:01

Liffey she has a good point though (even though I wouldn't smoke either!)

georgimama · 17/12/2008 21:02

Keep it on the thread in question, OP. Starting threads to bitch about another thread is just meh.

stillenacht · 17/12/2008 21:02

OMG soooooooo loved teachers - Loved Simon!

wrinklytum · 17/12/2008 21:03

One of my parents was a secondary Head of a tough inner city comp.It wasn't classed as failing but it had its fair share of problems, mainly due to it's social demographic. They practically lived there. We never saw them. They were a total workaholic. When they got to the twilight years of their job they left to teach abroad, which was the best thing they ever did otherwise I think it would've killed them.

Blandmum · 17/12/2008 21:04

I'd 'prefer' not to mark kids books that smell of cigarette smoke. Do I have the right to report them to their bosses???

I think not. It is none of my buisness. I don't like it, I think that they are daft to do it. But it is not my buisness

SleighGirl · 17/12/2008 21:05

we had a letter home today because dd's teacher has been off this week (and perhaps some of last week), yr2, it transpires that some of the parents have complained that they are concerned that the dc haven't been listened to for their reading, changed books, have had supply staff.

Get a life it is the last 2 weeks of term it will not kill them, they are too excited, knackered & half of the ill for it to really make a difference.

I think some parents have nothing better to do tbh!

Would it be welcomed if I spoke to the head and just added I really don't think it matters that they are having a supply teacher? The head actually taught them this morning and listened to them read etc to pacify these parents I guess.

moondog · 17/12/2008 21:05

I hate the way people who have a fag are now classes as the devil incarnate.

stillenacht · 17/12/2008 21:06

btw thats bollox liffey - my job and my smoking are nought to do with each other - i know i am a bloody good teacher, an inspiration and a friend to those pupils that need me to be.

OP posts:
KatieDD · 17/12/2008 21:07

My DD's poor teacher is off with another miscarriage, her 4th I think and people are bitching about her at the school gates, apparently she should be trying around the holidays.

georgimama · 17/12/2008 21:09

Yes Katie but this is a thread about a thread about teachers smoking directly outside the school gates. Those parents are just mental.

stillenacht · 17/12/2008 21:10

thats exactly what i am talking about - unfortunately it makes me quite bitter towards parents all this - lets blame teachers for everything culture - i like the kids its the adults who are awful

OP posts:
stillenacht · 17/12/2008 21:12

No its not just about smoking - its everything

All the time we get slagged off for every little thing and i have had enough of it.

Too much slagging off of the profession and too little respect shown to us - its no wonder that there are 1,000's of jobs going begging in the TES every week
