Georgiemama,I'm going to stick my oar in here, even though I am not a teacher.
I'm working on the premise that the OP wasn't solely talking about the smoking issue but the whole perception of teachers in general.
Yes you get "Bad apples" in every profession/job/vocation call it what you will, but the majority of teachers I have known are hard working and dedicated, whatever sector they teach in.
The role is very varied and as well as teaching commitments they have hours of work to do outside school and within their "Cushy holidays"
Have you ever tried to control a bunch of teenagers who have no real wish to learn?
Have you ever tried planning a lesson?
Have you ever had to read 20,000 curriculum documents?
Have you ever stayed behind for hours in your job helping with extra curricular activities?
Participated in school trips?
Gone to endless meetings?
Participated in pastoral care?
Done additional marking?
Dealt with the whole minutiae of social problems?
and so on and so on.......
Walk a mile in someone else's shoes and then comment.
A whole shedload of stuff goes on in making our dcs have a valuable education.
I fail to mention being sworn too, threats of physical violence (A pupil once PULLED A GUN!!!! out in a lesson of one of my parent's teaching staff, thankfully unloaded and a replica, but still!!!)
