to be so depressed at the state of 'the masses' in my town?

I freely admit I look grim first thing in the morning, but would not dream of leaving the house looking that way.

Yet when I do go out, I am surrounded by people with greasy hair, stained shell suits, ill-fitting mismatched polyester 'sportswear', covered in spots etc. I am not a snob and understand that some people are short of money, but polyester football shirts (in size 22 plus) probably cost more and certianly are more offensive and less flattering than a plain black cotton t-shirt. Why do people do it??

LOL you are brave for posting this .

I completely agree, btw.

2AdventSevenfoldShoes · 05/12/2008 12:29

theres a suprise

MrsSeanBean · 05/12/2008 12:31

I said in the op I am not a snob. Why does making an effort to look decent make me a snob eh??

OP posts:
jumpingbeans · 05/12/2008 12:31

Just worry about yourself, and how you look.

laweaselmys · 05/12/2008 12:31

I agree about the clothes (always have sorry - sports clothes are way more expensive than lots of other alternatives) but as for the rest I think you are looking for faults...

why do you care?

Anna8888 · 05/12/2008 12:32

You can be depressed about having to look at ill-kempt people.

And you can be depressed on their behalf - that they are unable to live better (for whatever sad reason).

sunnygirl1412 · 05/12/2008 12:34

Making an effort to look decent does not make you a snob. Looking down on people for wearing polyester and football shirts does.

MrsSeanBean · 05/12/2008 12:34

I care because it is depressing. And I do care actually.

Strange choice of first post on mn

SixSpotBurnet · 05/12/2008 12:35

It's not what people look like, it's how they are that matters. Did nobody ever tell you that?

MrsSeanBean · 05/12/2008 12:36

I don't 'look down' on them! Why does everyone make this assumption? I make a stirling effort not to treat people any differently based on how they look. But I do think it is depressing for me and smacks of depression in them. As Anna said..

ComeWhineWithMe · 05/12/2008 12:36

Must be so hard been as perfect and special as you .
You also come across as a massive snob The masses FFS.

ComeOVeneer · 05/12/2008 12:37

erm TROLL me thinks!!!!

sunnygirl1412 · 05/12/2008 12:38

Your first post definitely smacks of 'looking down' on people - ie football shirts being more offensive. The whole tone of your first post is incredibly superior and unpleasant.

MrsSeanBean · 05/12/2008 12:38

Sarcasm is very low. Who said I was perfect or special? I said I was grim actually (first thing).

Putting aside the whole snobbery aspect and concentrating on why seeing people dressed nicely/creatively is a lift and people dressed badly/joylessly is a downer -

Maybe it's because dressing "nicely" is not so much a sign of having residual cash as a sign of having reserves of residual joy. a sort of excess of energy and thinking capacity and bounce that results in a kind of sartorial playfulness and grace.

And also a kind of benevolence that makes you thin "Heck, today I'm going to dress in a way that's a gift to the world?"?

Just a sort of left-field idea.

Mercy · 05/12/2008 12:39

COV , yes I think so. First post etc
