to be so depressed at the state of 'the masses' in my town?

I freely admit I look grim first thing in the morning, but would not dream of leaving the house looking that way.

Yet when I do go out, I am surrounded by people with greasy hair, stained shell suits, ill-fitting mismatched polyester 'sportswear', covered in spots etc. I am not a snob and understand that some people are short of money, but polyester football shirts (in size 22 plus) probably cost more and certianly are more offensive and less flattering than a plain black cotton t-shirt. Why do people do it??

Is this real? I was under the clearly misguided opinion that MN was a lighthearted place to air opinions. Not an alternative to the G8 summit FFS.

whoever told you that?

MrsSeanBean · 05/12/2008 16:58

Poverty is depressing. I live in a very middle class town where the mothers wear boden and go to the gym (disclaimer - excluding me, I can't afford either!). A few miles away from me is a town where the inhabitants dress as the OP describes and there are long queues at the lottery terminals. I have to admit that every time I shop in the latter town I come away thinking how depressing and unfair life is.

YABU - You make it sound so easy to pull yourself out of poverty and it really isn't that simple.

Ruby2shoes · 05/12/2008 18:19

Ooooh Im not getting involved - I must be a snob!!!

ScottishMummy · 05/12/2008 18:32

poshwellies · 05/12/2008 23:16

Quattrocento · 05/12/2008 23:17

Poverty is depressing by the way. Literally.

My children go to a private school. When I drop them off it strikes me that everyone is trying so hard it hurts. Surgery, botox, dyed hair, those girdley things, real designer cloze, so much makeup ... And the conversation is so vacuous I would willingly cut my head off to avoid it.

YaddaYaddaYadda · 05/12/2008 23:20

'Ope yer scruncy will match yer trakky suit! Just remember, the 'Croydon facelift' is the hairdo du jour!

needmorecoffee · 06/12/2008 07:32

I'm now wondering if MrsSB types are out there judging my rather scruffy jeans (they were my sisters and she's larger than me), my jumper with holes in and my unkempt hair (dh says I loook like a hippy traveller)
Just for the record - I don't care about appearances, I don't have any money so if I did its just tough, I am a carer and don't have time to care or do anything about the money and stick yer eyeballs in and quit judging people by what they look like.

Quattro - my boys school is the same. I'm rarely there as they catch a bus but sometimes I have to present myself for a parents evening and they all make cat bum faces at me. I'm in a wheelchair too with muscle spasms. Does mean I get given a wide berth
