to be so depressed at the state of 'the masses' in my town?

I freely admit I look grim first thing in the morning, but would not dream of leaving the house looking that way.

Yet when I do go out, I am surrounded by people with greasy hair, stained shell suits, ill-fitting mismatched polyester 'sportswear', covered in spots etc. I am not a snob and understand that some people are short of money, but polyester football shirts (in size 22 plus) probably cost more and certianly are more offensive and less flattering than a plain black cotton t-shirt. Why do people do it??

Football shirts do look awful.

Sometimes on a Saturday in Sheffield you can't move for hairy arms, beer bellies, shaven heads, tattoos, earrings and football shirts.

And that's just the women.

Hi Donnie, no but I do identify with Goethe -viz.

"As to what I have done as a poet,? I take no pride in it? But that in my century I am the only person who knows the truth in the difficult science of colours - of that, I say, I am not a little proud, and here I have a consciousness of a superiority to many."

UnquietDad - yes I think I shall start a thread on body jewllery and tattoos tomorrow. When visiting in Sheffield it is a problem!

This does remind me of that karen Matthews programme on panorama last night! They even said it gave a real insight into these 'estates' and their day to day life; in and out of each others houses all day and night and not interested if it wasn't happening on their estate etc (all the programme makers words btw) talked about as though they're a different species..... I do belive they are, a subclass, the underclass? Thast estate was full of truly lovely people committed to find Shannon (except for her own disgraceful family) but all the neighbours getting wasted, letting off fireworks and 'raving' in the street when she was found... good excuse for a right piss up!

potoftea · 05/12/2008 15:58

MrsSeanBean I admire your bravery in posting such an inflamatory opinion. And totally agree with you.

I also find it amazing how bad some people look; no I'm not perfect, and loads of these people could look a lot better than me.
But when I go to town I wouldn't wear the same clothes that I'd wear walking the dog, or hanging around the house.
The older generation look so much better than the younger. By older I mean over 60. The men always wear shirts and ties, and blazer type jackets. And the ladies either in skirts or trousers are also smartly dressed.
It's a pride in yourself thing, and the older generation who actually had a lot less stuff or opportunities than us growing up, seem to have more pride in themselves.

MrsSeanBean · 05/12/2008 16:01

Potoftea - you are spot on. Even the 'poorer' older people (- as far as one can judge - before people start shouting) look better turned out than the younger generation. Which proves it's nothing to do with money or class or snobbery etc, it's a mindset and question of self respect and self discipline.

2AdventSevenfoldShoes · 05/12/2008 16:08

NEETs what is one?

potoftea · 05/12/2008 16:08

Yes, IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH MONEY. Sorry, but I really do feel that way.

My own dad who was unemployed for many years before his death, only ever went without a tie on a really hot day. He would be mortified to be seen around town not smartly turned out. He had a low income all his life, but knew he was as good as any man in this town, and dressed that way too.
It's not about being snobby, or thinking you are better than others. It's about knowing that you are as good as anyone, no matter how much money you have, or haven't, or how you were educated.

georgimama · 05/12/2008 16:12

Not in Education, Employment or Training.

In other words, a kid aged between about 16 and 21 who is doing absolutely nothing useful at all with their life.

harleyd · 05/12/2008 16:15

oi whats wrong with tattoos and body piercings!

i couldnt care what people wear, if they look like shit, well its up to them really

OrmIrian · 05/12/2008 16:17

"The men always wear shirts and ties, and blazer type jackets. And the ladies either in skirts or trousers are also smartly dressed"

Not my parents In the right circumstances they can scrub up but not a a general rule. I think you'd struggle to call them 'the masses' though.

MrsSeanBean · 05/12/2008 16:34

While it is good to see some common sense on here, I don't understand why a post inspired by my dislike of stained shell suits (worn in public) should be thought controversial or inflamatory.

So I dislike some vulgar things. This is not a crime (yet). There is no discrimiation involved in me having a private opinion. If anyone in town needed help I would be the first to stop and assist them (stained polyester or not). But I am still entitled to an opinion on their choice of clothing.

I think it has gone too far when people are too scared to say what everyone is really thinking ( -and come on... does anyone of those "ooh aren't you a snob" posters really and truly look at this style with admiration or pleasure? Do they never look at a young girl and think (sadly) that they could make so much more of their appearance? Do the snob posters even concede that I am allowed to think? ) Could it be that many people don't really have their own opinion anymore but have just been brainwashed into thinking what is and is not ok...? Political correctness is rot imo.

I will not be a boring PC sheep! The truth hurts sometimes!

pointydog · 05/12/2008 16:45

Some people find it depressing to wacth 4 wheel drives clog up city streets.

Som epeople find it depressing to watch a customer giving a waiter a dressing down in a restaurant, giving no thought to their feelings.

SOme people findit depressing to see adults only dress their children in designer clothes and look down on others who don't.

What a ridiculous argument against shell-suit wearers, 'I find it depressing'. Get over it.

pointydog · 05/12/2008 16:47

I find that the people who refuse to be a sheep and take pride in their outspokenness, often make their stand over the most trivial of things.

Why not 'not be a sheep' over something which could actually do some good?

AccioPinotGrigio · 05/12/2008 16:48

MrsSeanBean - have you nothing better to concern yourself with than the appearance of others. I think it's the piffling nature of your complaint that troubles me most. FGS people are starving, the climate is in melt down, the global economy is fucked. Yet you object to stained shell suits. Gawd elp us.

MrsSeanBean · 05/12/2008 16:49

I am new - just give me time!

And lighten up for Gawd's sake.
