To not want an August baby?

DodgyApostrophe · 19/11/2008 20:49

I'm not ttc this month.

I don't want a baby in August as I feel they are definitely at a disadvantage throughout school.

I do want a baby, desperately. Have been ttc for 2 years and have had 2 mc since ds1.

Is it really that bad to be born in August?

ivykate44 : there is another country that allows children start Reception a year late - right on your doorstep It's called Scotland Grin

Primary 1 is our equivalent of Reception: technically, the age range is 4.5 to 5.5 when you start (March to the following February) - but if you are not yet 5 when the school year starts (mid August) you can choose to defer until the the following year. In practice, people on really consider deferring for November to February birthday kids and the councils will only usually fund January/February kids.

And then, the following year, the deferred kids will start as the oldest (as opposed to the youngest) in Primary 1.

Clarification: "councils will only usually fund January/February kids for thier nursery place "

ah but I don't know Scotland Grin I have been told it is beautiful

When I try to explain to people here that the system in England means that you miss Reception, rather than defer Reception, they are Shock and Confused

I was the same when I found out via MN - I had to get it explained to me repeatedly because (to me) it seemed so illogical, as libelulle points out.

when i was at school some people defered year 2 or year 3, they stayed in year 1 or year 2 for a second year until they where ready to move to the higher class - so can relate to defered class moving or starting

Wouldn't bother me. I am August-born and myself and the other August-born child at my primary school were actually top in class most years. You can always hold your August-born child back a half or full year if you are concerned.

Grin ChabbyChic, did your dd have a lovely birthday? Interestingly enough I am an August birthday and I avoided baby making Wink in the months that would have given July and August babies, and September as was concerned about prem, summer boy baby. Obviously I am highly efficient as ds was October :)

I agree with OP. I have an August born son, who is coping well at school, but ONLY, because i ensure that i work with him. However, it is bloody hard work and my ds is deffo emotionally immature.
I do wish i could have kept my legs crossed until September.

Well my birthday was yesterday and because it falls in the holidays, it meant that my dearest friends were able to come round with their kids and all our collective DCs played while we ate cake and put the world to rights, in the glorious sunshine. (In my case, drank lots of Pimms).

Try doing that in November. :o
