To not want an August baby?

DodgyApostrophe · 19/11/2008 20:49

I'm not ttc this month.

I don't want a baby in August as I feel they are definitely at a disadvantage throughout school.

I do want a baby, desperately. Have been ttc for 2 years and have had 2 mc since ds1.

Is it really that bad to be born in August?

DS1 was due October but arrived at the end of July so went to school as one of the youngest instead as one of the oldest. He's coped fine so IMO you are being a bit U.

MilaMae · 23/08/2011 10:37

Most kids will cope with anything when they have to but to infer that a very young child who has had an entire year less to develop, learn and mature won't have some disadvantage to one an entire year older is not fair on that child.

To say it won't have an effect is slightly putting ones head in the sand to say the least.

As I said before there are exceptions and they all catch up eventually anyway but it's not the ideal scenario for those less mature or able. Nobody can predict what a child will be like when it starts school so the op was not bu to be concerned or to plan accordingly.

very old thread

Beware the Zombie threads

It's my birthday on Thursday (presents will be accepted) and being born in August never did me any harm at school, I liked being one of the youngest and I was all clever n shit.

Lunabelly · 23/08/2011 16:21

JanMorrow - why hello, I think we might be twins Wink

I think Ivan the Terrible, Clara Bow, Michael Rennie, Sean Connery, Gene Simmons, Tim Burton, Claudia Schiffer, Billy Ray Cyrus, and Alexander Skarsgard, to name but a few, have done alroight for themselves. I myself have an IQ somewhere between 136 and 159, so I think I've done ok too. (I choose to not be ruler of the universe, got to give some other poor fucker a chance. Yes. :o )

It also means I can pinpoint my correct age when reminiscing about my skool days. Not that I even know my correct age nowadays. Been lying about that for far too long...

I work in education for a government body and had this conversation with our analysts about my August born twins and educational attainment. The message from them was 'social class' is a far far greater factor in terms educational outcomes than timing of birth, but it is a factor, and more so for boys than girls. You can see the same affect in Scotland on kids born at the end of their academic year (march?).

I have found that my kids tend to play with the younger kids in their year, but academically they are doing well.

Your baby could be due in September or October but still be born in August!

Your baby could be due December and be born in Augest. Shock True btw as well.

Not sure why old thread resurrected but have to add My mum, me and DS are all Aug and 2 days apart. Never been a problem for us. Also cousins DD (see above) and other cousins DD. We are all within a week of each other.

youarekidding · 23/08/2011 18:30

Actually the only thing that pissed me right off about my DS being Aug born was the bloody school refusing him help when he was behind because 'he's aug baby and a boy'. Can you tell it still rankles 2 years later. Grin

VaginaPuddleduck · 23/08/2011 18:31

I bloody LOVE having an August baby.

hairfullofsnakes · 23/08/2011 20:03

My friend who is a teacher says it can make a difference when children are young - maybe it depends on the child?

pranma · 23/08/2011 20:26

My dd was born in August and it has never been a problem. She did well academically and socially.similarly my dd-i-l was born 31st August stayed with her school year and eventually took a first in English at York University.

kiki22 · 23/08/2011 20:48

Sandalwood · 23/08/2011 20:51

I always felt my summer birthday friends had a year in hand when they took their 'o' levels at 15 or 'a' levels at 17.

robotlollypopman · 23/08/2011 20:52

I was born August 27th and was the youngest in my year. Didn't stop me being a genius. :-)

summertimeblews · 23/08/2011 20:57

i love having an august birthday

and i think if a child is bright, they will do well whenever they are born - i did, I was the only one from my primary school to get a scholarship. Definitely didnt disadvantage me, but then i am glass half full and some people just have a victim complex from day one :)

chabbychic · 23/08/2011 21:02

IT WAS ME!!!!!! Shock

HA HA HA!!!! Grin

How weird to see this thread again, dd has just turned two and she's GORGEOUS! Can't imagine her being someone else iyswim.

Oh and she is SO going to be ready for school when she's 4.

Grin Grin Grin

VaginaPuddleduck · 23/08/2011 21:04

So you DID get pregnant that month?

How funny!!

I remember this thread when it came out - my August born DD1 was only 3 months old and I remember being offended by the title.

Couldn't give a shit now of course, congrats on your DD (belatedly)

chabbychic · 23/08/2011 21:08

Thank you - it's funny how important things seem at the time!

izzywhizzyletsgetbusy · 23/08/2011 21:16

I am late summer born, was reading before I went to school, and set off for university a year before my classroom peers.

I plotted and planned to ensure hoped my dc would also enjoy late summer birthdays and I'm delighted to report that, thanks to fireworks and big bangs on Guy Fawkes Night, they do.

mummytowillow · 23/08/2011 22:03

My daughter is an August 21st girl, why will she be disadvantaged in school, or is just because she will be the youngest in her year?

I am genuinely interested by the way?

I'm a late august girl and was also reading before I went to school, have a degree and post-grad qualification.
Apparently I LOVED school.
IMO its the august boys that find starting school the hardest.

bumpsoon · 23/08/2011 22:43

My friends dd is a late august birthday ,so she is the very youngest in her year at school , she takes her gcse's next year ,but took her AS level in maths this year .
