Every girl in year 4 has been star of the week - some more than once.

Dd1 has not. I hate bloody star of the week anyway but this is making me so cross.

There are only 6 girls in Year 4 fgs. AND its all so trumped up eg 'Brenda is SOTW for trying hard' 'Mabel is SOTW for being a good friend' surely they can find something for dd1.

my dd has been at her school for over 3 years and has never been star of the fecking week, it really upsets her (and me ). Like you say, some of the others have been SOT(F)W week more than once .

Tis all bolleaux. Kids aren't stupid and see it for the manufactured manipulation it is. Why can't teachers just TALK to them and praise when appropriate??

Oh Enid, I hate the way they make the stars the ones that aren't really the stars, as they feel your dd is so good at being a good friend she doesn't need praising for it-uh, hello! They have THRONES in our class for K & Q of the class-dd once sat on it and refused to get off because everyone had been queen bar her

I had this with ds but the teacher(who is my sis in laws friend wouldn't have mentioned otherwise) said she uses it for naughty challenging kids to give them a bit of encouragement. This made e feel better if not ds.

Just have a little word with the teacher, they are probably going to make sure that everyone in the CLASS gets it at least once in the year, (there are only 40odd weeks in the whole year after all), but maybe hadn't realised that the girls compare with each other rather than the whole class.
If it hasn't occurred to the teacher that everyone should get it, then s/he needs telling.

and people saying 'oh but it made bruno's day when he was chosen poor little bruno, how can you dismiss this amazing fillip to his self esteem, what harm does it do ' etc etc

I would agree - only DD1 was star of the week last week (secondary school, they don't do it in primary) and she came home so pleased, and I was so proud so although I agree IN PRINCIPLE that it is a BAD THING, it was a great morale boost for DD.
Slightly different system in her secondary school though, in that star of the week is given to the pupil who has accumulated the most merits that week, so there is some objective basis for the choice.

We used to have a celebration assembly once a week and hand out little certificateto a child in each class. I used to keep a tick list to make sure that each child had received a certificate by the end of the term/year. Obviously this was on top of things I might do in the class (and I also dislike child of the day etc and never did this). If the school is going to continue with this type of reward system could you perhaps talk to your teacher and maybe even subtely suggest she does something similar so that all the children feel equally valued?

DS2 seems to be star of the week every other week. Sickening.

my dd is in reception and they have a star of the week. Needless to say it's not been her.... neither has she made it onto "the rainbow". She did make it on to "the thundercloud" last week for saying someone was a "poo-poo-head" though,
I was so proud...

Oh my god they have a list on the website . that is bad! Dd never tells me if she gets anything, or if she does it is three weeks later, so the praise is a little late coming!

It's a pile of bollocks. If they're going to do it they at least should keep proper records so that they can make sure that even the most non-starry child gets a look-in.

Three years on it still riles me that various goody-goodies in dd1's primary school class used to win 'Star of the week' and (even worse) the termly 'Good Book' (boak) on a regular basis, when dd1 who was actually pretty well-behaved though a bit spiky and non-teacher's pett-y appeared to be invisible on the school's goodness radar.
