To have reported these builders ?

At lunch time I walked to the nearest shops to work and passed a site where there are retirement homes being built. As I walked by a couple of builders whistled and shouted 'oy' . I noticed a sign outside the site saying something about 'considerate construction' so rang it immediately! I wasn't rude but I did point out that shouting at people walking by was hardly considerate.

Why do I feel so guilty then!? MEH!

Not uptight but do have self respect and don't feel validated by being yelled at in the street in a dergatory manner.

Yep, I am a bit uptight about sexism.

I get all uptight about racism too. And the older I get, the more uptight I get about ageism. Not too keen on disablism either...

And?

LittleWhizzingBella · 03/11/2008 19:53

KM - d'you think my mate shouldn't have been bothered by the Chalky noises because he had enoguh self respect not to be? Or d'you think he would have been within his rights to expect to be able to walk down a street without being subjected to that kind of racist shit?

LittleWhizzingBella · 03/11/2008 19:55

In fact, does the fact that he was really pissed off about it, reveal he had no self-respect?

Oh yeah sorry, I forgot, the heirarchy of de-humanisation again. Racism - bad, sexism - good/ OK.

I don't think anyone said string em up and castrate them.

I think someone mentioned phoning a complaints line and someone else mentioned educating our children to a) not dehumanise the opposite sex and b) not to accept being dehumanised.

both slightly more progressive options, I feel.

This thread has put the final nail in my mumsnet coffin so in a way has done me a favour despite feeling let down that Mn has become this when it never was

traceybath · 03/11/2008 20:07

I'm personally not offended by a whistle. But i have a high threshold for office banter too.

Comments i'd find a bit offensive and i must say i didn't like it when i was a lot younger.

I guess to me its just a bit like a smile from a bloke in the car next to you at the traffic lights.

But beanie yanbu to phone up as there was a sign there for that purpose.

LittleWhizzingBella · 03/11/2008 20:10

What stereotypes are those KM?

Lauriefairycake · 03/11/2008 20:19

jeez, people should pop over to the 'have you been abused, raped thread' and read some of the stories there.

It's astonishingly shit to patronise men like this, saying that they 'can't help themselves' or 'I'm glad they validate my attractiveness by having them letch at me randomly'.

There are women on that other thread who haven't reported hundreds of crimes - this is the thin end of the wedge.

Seriously, who doesn't want to wander through life without being leered at sexually or intimidated in any way?

FFS, the juxtaposition of these two threads.

NOT ONCE have advocated stringing them up, or any of the other weird and wonderful things people have been saying. I have just excerciced my freedom to report their behaviour to a telephone line provided for that purpose and my annoyance at their behaviour.

Sadly some of you have decided that I am uptight or PC gone mad because I did this, or maybe it was because I bothered posting about it?

I should have kept my mouth shut on both counts I guess. By not saying anything I obviously would have helped many women to feel good in the future as the builders continue their strange attempts at making contact with strangers who pass them by!. Shame on me!

KM, you haven't actually answered any direct questions have you?
