piranha?

SqueakyPop · 22/10/2008 21:46

Cries of 'no fair' = envy

I can't get in there so it should be banned.

Boo sucks.

spicemonster · 22/10/2008 21:48

Oh religion is open to everyone now is it? So can we come to your school if we say we believe? Or do we have to come along and be bored shitless every sunday like most people do to get in?

Is that penance or something? I don't get it

EachPeachPearMum · 22/10/2008 21:49

Faith schools (not just RC) should not be state funded because they discriminate.
Churchgoers form LESS THAN 5% of the populous, yet there are more than 5% of schools that are faith based- more like 30%.
That is not representative.
Should we have 10% of schools available to gay children (or rather children of gay parents) only?
Or schools that are open to African-Caribbean children only, because they form a significant section of society?

Quattrocento · 22/10/2008 21:50

The thing is though spicemonster, faith schools ARE generally divided along racial lines.

Show me a black catholic. I know they exist, but I've never met one.

Show me a black jew. I know they exist and I have met one in Israel, but there are not very many of them.

Show me a white muslim. I know they exist but I have never met one.

So in fact, by drawing lines around faith, in de facto terms, the schools are also drawing lines around race as well.

EachPeachPearMum · 22/10/2008 21:51

Okay squeaky- I run a hospital. You need to attend A&E because you have broken your ankle.
Sorry- you're not atheist, nor has your sister attended this A&E- We're not treating you. Please drive 30 miles to the next town to a hospital that accepts catholics.

Not Fair?

KatieDD · 22/10/2008 21:51

PMSL I shouted out to my husband how do you spell qur'an and he came back with pirahna, not sure which one of us is deafer

spicemonster · 22/10/2008 21:52

Yes quattro you're right. I was a bit too cross to make a cogent argument. I suspect this is because my nearest school is CofE so I'm a bit stuffed

EachPeachPearMum · 22/10/2008 21:52

I was wondering if you had been using a speech recognition tool

KatieDD · 22/10/2008 21:52

Are you on drugs ? You've never met a black Catholic, I know a family of 5, my Aunty is married to a Muslim and converted her children are half white and being raised as Muslims.

SqueakyPop · 22/10/2008 21:52

As long as these schools can fill their places (and they do), then there is no reason for them not to be state funded. The kids that go there are entitled to state funding, are they not?

If you don't like it simply because you can't get in, then you are simply jealous. Making them private does nothing to help you personally, so would not satisfy whatever motives you have.

Now if we want to be truly fair, we would give tax back to all private school parents.

EachPeachPearMum · 22/10/2008 21:53

Most british muslims tend to use 'koran' I think!

Miffyinsurrey · 22/10/2008 21:53

So spicemonster are you in favour of lotteries for secondary schools which remove choice from all parents and the resulting environmental damage.

I think your opinions are very negative...I have chosen a C of E school because I like the christian ethos of the school and I am happy for my child to learn along side people of all backgrounds there. You do not have to be C of E to benefit from education in a C of E school.

frogs · 22/10/2008 21:53

Quattro -- I've had 3 dc in 3 different catholic schools, and all are at least 50% non-white. Lots of Nigerian and Ghanaian catholics, Sri Lankans, Mauritians, Brazilians, Caribbean etc etc.

Even out in the sticks where I grew up in the 70s and 80s my Catholic school had loads of non-white kids.

frogs · 22/10/2008 21:54

Schools are 50% nonwhite, I mean -- my dc are standard-issue white european dishwater blonde.

SqueakyPop · 22/10/2008 21:54

My last baby was born in a Catholic hospital and they were quite happy to have us there.

Religious hospital foundations really do have an ethos for caring for all - like missionaries.

EachPeachPearMum · 22/10/2008 21:54

pmsl Katie- a bit harsh!
Not all mners live inlovely mixed communities. I know plenty of white and African-Caribbean Muslims. Haven't met any Jews of non-caucasian stock though....

KatieDD · 22/10/2008 21:58

Sorry if that was harsh, and I should be in bed but it gets on my tits that people think every Catholic is a white, redhead with freckles and came over during the potatoe famine.

I know Jews who are extremely racist and would never marry a non Jew but with all their history you can hardly blame them can you ?

spicemonster · 22/10/2008 21:59

Miffy - what are you talking about re environmental damage? Most parents would choose for their children to go to the nearest decent school. I will not get my DS into that school unless I pretend I give a toss about god and drag me and my DS to that particular church every sunday. I'm disinclined to do that but I will if I have to. Is that really what you want? People like me sneering just so I can get my DS into my local school? Seems pretty pointless.

As eachpearplum says, not that many people bother going to church. And yet your schools are hugely over-represented,

EachPeachPearMum · 22/10/2008 21:59

Gah- squeaky- it is an analogy. If as Dollius said Faith schools accepted 90% non-faith based applicants, I probably would have less of an issue with them, but they do not.

I am not jealous because I can't get in- I DO NOT want my DC to attend a faith school- because I do not believe in indoctrination.

Independent (private) schools may be whatever or no faith- I have absoultely no bones about that- the parents who choose those schools are paying for whatever bias they want their children to be educated in.

EachPeachPearMum · 22/10/2008 22:01

frogs which schools are you talking about that are 50% non-white?
90% of UK is white.

EachPeachPearMum · 22/10/2008 22:02

and miffy you DO have to be CE to benefit from a CE education where I live.

SqueakyPop · 22/10/2008 22:03

My personal opinion is that CofE schools should prioritise non-Christians, and let the Christian kids should be salt and light in secular schools. Some CofE dioceses come fairly close. I know of a vicar who could not get his kids into the local CofE school.

SqueakyPop · 22/10/2008 22:04

There are loads of schools that are way more than 50% non-white. Go to Slough, for example.

Miffyinsurrey · 22/10/2008 22:04

Spicemonster..you think it is unfair that people with religious beliefs have a greater chance of getting in. If you scrap that, you are left with those who live nearest..that is then unfair on the less wealthy as house prices near the school will go out of people's reach. Then you get to the latest new labour idea of a lottery to make things "fair" so that everyone has a chance of getting in...this means you can live on the doorstep and not get in to your local school and have to drive..bad for the environment.

What system would be competely fair? And also if you are so anti religion why would you want your DC to go to a faith school anyway?
