to wish that Dirty Dancing wasn't about a girl who "grows up" by stealing money from her father to pay for her friend's back-street abortion?

... at least that's the way I remember it

SUCH a shame though because it's such a FAB film, and DD (5) is obsessed by the soundtrack - but I can't really put the soundtrack in CONTEXT for her for about 10 years...

No, YANBU.

Don't even get me started on Pretty Woman. Why women think that film is romantic utterly defeats me.

no1putsbabyinthecorner · 27/09/2008 19:39

I love this film, I just think about the dancing tbh, and wish I could dance like that.
Dh said the dvd will never ever enter his dvd collection, when we first met.
However he soon bought it me one year.
People always think I like it because of Patrick.

expatinscotland · 27/09/2008 19:40

Pretty Woman is the biggest crock of shit.

Guadalupe · 27/09/2008 19:41

I know, ds and dd would really enjoy it but that aspect obviously isn't appropriate. Doing the mashed potato will have to remain in the kitchen for quite some time.

Twiglett · 27/09/2008 19:42

nah she grew up by rogering Patrick Swayze senseless

at least that's how I remember it

tortoiseshell · 27/09/2008 19:42

Pretty Woman is Cinder-fucking-rella....

and Dirty Dancing isn't about stealing money for a back street abortion, it's about Johnny learning that it life isn't a load of shit, and people are prepared to help others.

TheCrackFox · 27/09/2008 19:43

Twiglett, she had the time of her life.

JuneBugJen · 27/09/2008 19:43

And never putting Baby in the corner.

spicemonster · 27/09/2008 19:45

I'd never seen DD until last year (I'm 43) when I watched it out of curiosity and it was crap. Never seen Pretty Woman either.

I just don't get why women think those films are great.

JuneBugJen · 27/09/2008 19:46

But they ARE! They just are...

VictorianSqualor · 27/09/2008 19:46

I thought she grew up by knowing her own mind and standing up to people.
If you remember she poured water over the little harvard shit (Robbie) for getting Penny pg in the first place, she went and woke her Dad up to save Penny even though she knew he would go crazy at her, she stuck up for Johnny when she knew it wasn't him that had stolen the money, she stepped in to learn a dance to cover penny and Johnny's backs etc.

She was meant to have been helping people and standing up for what she thought was right. IMO.

Pretty Woman, well, not quite the same but wasn't that supposed to have been a love story because Edward didn't care that she was a hooker and loved her anyway.

Twiglett · 27/09/2008 19:47

you're forgetting that she shagged him .. a lot

TheCrackFox · 27/09/2008 19:49

She also held a watermelon at some point, and that was crucial to the plot.

compo · 27/09/2008 19:49

we love them because they are both romantic films
the girl gets the bloke of her dreams
when I watched them at 14 that was all I wanted out of life, to meet my soul amte (and if he looked like Patrick Swayze or Richard Gere then all the better) It was every teens fantasy to have someone like him say 'no one puts baby in the corner'

no1putsbabyinthecorner · 27/09/2008 19:51

love the water melon

JuneBugJen · 27/09/2008 19:52

What about Grease's take home message of... look slutty, smoke and with trousers which give you a monster camel hoof and suddenly you are univerally accepted.

Its heartwarming.

VictorianSqualor · 27/09/2008 19:52

She didn't actually shag him a lot.
Two or three times I think.
I'd have shagged him much more looking like that

There was the time when they first shagged, in his room, the time to 'These arms of miiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiyyeeeeiiiiiiiiinnnnnnnnne' and the time when she asked him 'How many women have you had?' but I may have missed one.

Her name was Frances Houseman

TheCrackFox · 27/09/2008 19:54

I love Greases' message that the only way to hook a man is to completely change your personality to please him.

Cies · 27/09/2008 19:55

tee hee at VS´s encyclopedic knowledge of DD!

traceybath · 27/09/2008 19:55

Dirty Dancing is up there with Flashdance! - however do really think you needed to watch them first as a teenager.

morningpaper · 27/09/2008 19:55

oh yes Grease is really bad

Look slutty, smoke fags, dye your hair blonde and fuck boys = good and fulfilling

Look square and hang around libraries = bad and unfulfilling

Also all that talk about the chick's creaming over his pussy wagon is rather unecessary

Blondilocks · 27/09/2008 19:56

I was really bored when I watched Dirty Dancing. I just didn't get why it was so raved about!

VictorianSqualor · 27/09/2008 19:56

BUT!!
Danny Zuko changed his look too.
It wasn't just Sandy.
