to wish that Dirty Dancing wasn't about a girl who "grows up" by stealing money from her father to pay for her friend's back-street abortion?

... at least that's the way I remember it

SUCH a shame though because it's such a FAB film, and DD (5) is obsessed by the soundtrack - but I can't really put the soundtrack in CONTEXT for her for about 10 years...

Oh Pretty Woman disgusted me when I saw it.

I was shocked by how shit it was.

Why would the man of your dreams be someone who used prostitutes? What serious self-esteem issues would you have to have for that to be the case?

GRUEuuuuuuuuuuuuu----uuuuuesome

tortoiseshell · 27/09/2008 23:05

Another fab DD scene

katz · 27/09/2008 23:07

but in PW he isn't looking to pick up a prostitue he's having trouble driving his friends car.

georgimama · 27/09/2008 23:10

Actually, I do like that he has to tell her to breathe. If my hand was on Patrick Swayze's chest I might forget to breathe too.

LittleBella · 27/09/2008 23:10

Eh? He buys her services for the weekend.

AND he's about 25 yeras older than her.

And he waves his money around to solve all problems.

tortoiseshell · 27/09/2008 23:15

I love his face when she keeps laughing.

expatinscotland · 27/09/2008 23:15

'It's a film Georgi '

Yes, and a very dumb one, too .

My sister used to make me watch it everytime it came on cable - back in the day when the movie channels showed the same thing OVER and OVER.

And in walks my dad, with a 'Of course that guy can spin round and jump like that! He's a ballerina.'

We were like 'How would you know, you're a total philistine.'

He shrugged, 'Because I saw him in a ballet. About bamboo. And some guy who dreamed bamboo, and fell in love with bamboo and danced with bamboo,' and he rolled his eyes and walked out.

We didn't believe him.

Sure enough, he was right! Patrick Swayze had danced with The Houston Ballet .

'Eh? He buys her services for the weekend.

'

And he's the world's biggest closet homosexual.

We went out on New Year's Eve with some friends and their newborn daughter.

They placed her car seat carefully out of the way, whereupon DH did a crap Swayze impression and said 'No one puts baby in the corner'.

They looked at him blankly, but at that moment I remembered why I loved him

solidgoldbrass · 28/09/2008 01:26

I have never seen DIrty Dancing, or Pretty Woman, or Ghost. I don't like 'women's films'. I hate Sex and The City as well.

If it hasn't got any zombies or car crashes in it (or at least one good bit of male-on-male shagging like Velvet Goldmine) I am not interested.

Monkeytrousers · 28/09/2008 11:46

haha, cool Expat!

Oh I like Dirty Dancing - at least I did last time I saw it about 15 years ago hehe

Blondeshavemorefun · 28/09/2008 11:56

"I always felt Oh there is so much I "missed" about DD the first time round, like the fact that Jonny was actually shagging older Women for cash. "

well he certainly wouldnt be shagging vivien for free

but true johnny was a gigalo

colacubes · 28/09/2008 12:04

Oh dirty dancing means my 2 favourite things and first loves, dancing and Patrick Swayze! I still am looking for the man who will dance with me like that, powerful and with unbrideled passion, ohhhhhhhh Patrick!

turquoise · 28/09/2008 12:11

Loving VS's work defending them here

Can't stand PW, the only real scene in that is when the creepy lawyer tries to rape her.

But Dirty Dancing - so crap and yet so utterly, utterly perfect. I don't think I'll ever tire of it.

I haven't let dd (10) watch it yet - how old would be reasonable? 12? She's seen Grease in spite of the 'camel hoof/smoking = the way forward' message.

ElfOnTheTopShelf · 28/09/2008 12:11

The appeal about DD is that every loves a good dance scene in a film

shes all that

13 going on 30

falcon · 28/09/2008 12:35

I love Ghost. How can anyone hate Ghost?

turquoise · 28/09/2008 12:37

Demi Moore - that's why I hate Ghost.

Did her best to ruin St Elmo;s Fire too - she is a movie ruiner, along with Andie Macdowell.

falcon · 28/09/2008 12:40

I haven't seen St Elmo's Fire. I have it as part of a bratpack box set though. Is it worth a watch?

ElfOnTheTopShelf · 28/09/2008 12:44

I love this as well

turquoise · 28/09/2008 12:45

I haven't seen it since the 80's but loved it then - more so than Breakfast Club or any of the other bratpack movies.

I honestly can't remember anything about it other than how annoying Demi Moore was, how hot Rob Lowe was, and the only scene that has stuck with me for some reason was Emilio Estevez aspiring to the "fluff and fold" wash at the launderette - so on that basis I would say, probably not!

falcon · 28/09/2008 12:46

Thankyou. I don't think I'll bother then.

I bought Mystic Pizza today so I think I'll give that a go.

Blondeshavemorefun · 28/09/2008 12:48

at elmo's fire is one of my ALL favourite films - LOVED rob lowe playing the sax, all sweaty

[ faints]

sooooooooo good, and also like breakfast club, actually it could prob be said that I really liked all the brat pack films - 16 candles, pretty in pink etc

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 28/09/2008 13:45

I watched dirty dancing last night, love it.

But my god, when they are dancing to hungry eyes, the size of their waists/hips/asses, shockingly small.

expatinscotland · 28/09/2008 14:15

Mystic Pizza was funny.

'I love you, Jo, but all you love is my dick!'

NotQuiteCockney · 28/09/2008 14:16

I can't stand this movie ... there's a central plot about someone getting pregnant by accident, right? But when the main characters have sex (outside of marriage etc etc) there is no mention of birth control. Presumably, because they are in lurve, it's not necessary?
