To be furious at Barratts Homes.. we thought we had bought our dream home

in a quiet location with working families and young kids. Is lovely, mid terrace, overlooking woodland, nice neighbours.. well in the houses sold that is.

Have now found out that the remaining properties including the 2 next to us (we are mid terrace) are sold to Housing Association as Barratts have been unable to sell them at the ridiculous prices they were asking.

THis means that the back garden is directly overlooked by housing association, with waist high fences. We already have so social housing here and have had some issues in terms out of control dogs, very loud parties, shouting and fighting etc. TO have that right next door as a possibilty is a real worry.

We paid a lot of money for our home and regardless of economic condition the value of the property will be affected by the fact that we are mid terrace with social housing.

I know i am likely to be flamed by some for not being politically correct but the fact is with socail housing there are often social issues and i didnt want to live next door to that. We saved for a long time to afford our home and now we are dreading the tenants moving in.

I have also been told that one of the women who will be going for one of the house is a well known drug user and that dealers will visit her...

and Barratts have really put us in the poo.

I love the term 'social housing'. It suggests there is a typre that is not social.

Fucking hell - just shoot the lot of them - how fucking dare they have to rely on social housing - or just ship them off to a big island and let them live in squalor.

And you have bought a terrace house on a Barrats Estate - what class of people did you think would be moving in?

And we live somewhere very wealthy, my neighbours are bloody rolling in it and they are still wankers - and they own their own home!

Seriously am fed up, not trying to start a whole snobbey class debate. I know many of the houses here have lovely familys in which are HA, but the thing is you jmust dont know who will be your neighbour. I guess can be said for private as well.

Not all council tenants are drug users/dealers/noisy/drunkards etc. You are making assumptions that you will end up with neighbours from hell. There are alot of families who are unable to afford to buy a house, IMO you are being really unreasonable. You can still have all the problems you are having with house owners.

And - just read again - you have waist high fences - why on earth would you buy a house with waist high fences if not to be social with your neighbours - we have 7' high fences so we don't have to be social (although they not actually that kinda social!) with ours!

(Sorry am bored now and should go to bed as DH watching feckin ryder cup - am being rude and obnoxious!)

Well I live on a Barratt estate, the house adjoining mine is privately owned, the other house next to me is HA. And you know what? The HA people are lovely and no trouble, it's the private ones who are a pain in the rear!!

Unless you pay much moolah to live on a vast country estate you can't choose your neighbours, luck of the draw i'm afraid!

If you paid £260k for anything then you're a twat, stamp duty increases at £250k, you have more money than sense.

OK.. I know not all [people in soical housing are druggies etc etc, and i know it it sounds awful that i am pissed off about this. But fact is I am. We bought private, told that all around would be private. Were aware that a proportion (alraeady sold) were HA. Now just under 50% of development is HA.

We spent alot of money on our home which will liekly never hold the value it had when it was all private.

I know that not everyone in HA are bad, but I do know there is a small proportion who have social issues. Is a worry, probably wrong of me, but there you go

was marketed 260, paid under asking price (stamp duty etc) but still alot.

Well if it's any consolation it would still be worth £130k next year with or without the HA types moving in.

So now get used to it - pull your neck in a little and go and make friends with some very nice HA people because in this economic climate you are going to be in your house for a very long time!

Alot of families live in HA homes because they can't afford a 260,000 house. You may have ended up with neighbours from hell if all the houses had been sold anyway, at least if they are neighbours from hell you can complain to the HA and they can get evicted. You can't do this if they own the house. You're lucky then arn't you!

I just feel like barratts have lied and that i was niave. Also i guess if there are problems with the HA neighbours at least you can go to the HA and speak to them... if they were private you are stuck with them.

So you were told that some of the estate would be HA but are you angered by the % of the estate that is HA or the fact that it is under your nose Hyacynith?

I wouldn't worry about your £260k identi- housing association home in this marketplace...I'm sure your money is as safe as housing associations

I live in social housing Buttonmeup. Go and read some of my posts and tell me I don't deserve to live next door to someone who owns their own house.

You are on to a hiding to nothing here, I suggest you bail out of this thread quick. Come back if/when you have a problem neighbour - who, you may like to know - will be far easier to get rid of if they are HA rather than private, due to ASBO laws - and you may get an easier ride.

I'd be equally gutted to pay £260k for a house (new or not) and then have noisy neighbours move in, whether they are council/HA/private or whatever.

My parents rent a council house. My dad often plays his Banjo and my brother has his music on loud sometimes, but thats ok. It's when you get the people across the road shouting/swearing at 2am because they couldn't find their keys. In fact, the guy shouting out "you w*ankerhead", had me in stitches!
