To be furious at Barratts Homes.. we thought we had bought our dream home

in a quiet location with working families and young kids. Is lovely, mid terrace, overlooking woodland, nice neighbours.. well in the houses sold that is.

Have now found out that the remaining properties including the 2 next to us (we are mid terrace) are sold to Housing Association as Barratts have been unable to sell them at the ridiculous prices they were asking.

THis means that the back garden is directly overlooked by housing association, with waist high fences. We already have so social housing here and have had some issues in terms out of control dogs, very loud parties, shouting and fighting etc. TO have that right next door as a possibilty is a real worry.

We paid a lot of money for our home and regardless of economic condition the value of the property will be affected by the fact that we are mid terrace with social housing.

I know i am likely to be flamed by some for not being politically correct but the fact is with socail housing there are often social issues and i didnt want to live next door to that. We saved for a long time to afford our home and now we are dreading the tenants moving in.

I have also been told that one of the women who will be going for one of the house is a well known drug user and that dealers will visit her...

and Barratts have really put us in the poo.

i thought this thread was about a shoddily built Barratt's home. i was thinking, 'yeah, that sounds about right for Barratt's.'

wotulookinat · 20/09/2008 21:50

Yes I clicked on the thread expecting to read about Barrats crap-ness, and was all ready to say how a friend had been let down by them.

Without going into the argument about council/social/private housing (you bloody snob), I thought that a cartain percentage of new housing had to be given to housing associations anyway.

And I am bitter that I can't afford a house anyway, so I hope your neighbours are shite.

2shoes · 20/09/2008 21:52

omg how weird that some people appear different threads with their polarised veiws

tiredemma · 20/09/2008 21:56

I recall reading somewhere that most property/development companies now have to commit to building a certain percentage of properties specifically for Local authority/HA within their new developments, this is more or less the only way that they get contracts (apprarently)

same article showed a young single mum who had a 'luxury two bed apt' overlooking Poole harbour, she had been on the council waiting list and was fortunate enough to get this place. Same article had a sneering wanker banker type chap who had paid a fair whack for an apt in the same complex. he looked a bit pissed off.

wotulookinat · 20/09/2008 21:59

I think it is sort of meant to even society out. In theory, that young mum would look at the banker guy and want to get a job etc etc. But on the other hand, I see the annoyance of the guy who has paid a lot of money for his home.
But just because you have cash, doesn't mean you are going to be a good neighbour.
I'd still be a crap neighbour if I had money!

ShyBaby · 20/09/2008 22:01

Ahem.

There's a girl I know who had a lovely new build Barratt shoebox house at age 19. Full time (secure) job, was engaged (to her hard working fiance), two cars. (She paid the deposit on the house btw). They planned and had a beautiful baby.

Then her relationship broke down, she had to move out into a council house and a few years later was made redundant and had to claim benefit for a while.

Im still the same person!! (As vulgar as I ever was ).

But im not going to throw cans of tenants super over my neighours gardens thanks. I also dont have dogs, parties or fight. Im probably more boring that the Barratt small house dwellers.

actually thinking about it, our brand new Barratt house fell apart very quickly. Twas a nightmare. The kitchen ceiling fell in due to the floor guy not understanding the very difficult diagram drawn on the bathroom floor showing where all the pipes were so he wouldn't bang a nail into them, the front door also dropped off, the windows rotted and the sink plumbing flooded our lovely new kitchen.

Used to drive me mad. Plus our neighbour at the back (also brand new Barratt) would park his car on our lawn and left a lil metro rotting there for about a year, broken glass, very nasty for my little ds. Until I complained to the local council and it was eventualy towed. Scrubbers the lot of them.

Darn unfriendly people.

expatinscotland · 20/09/2008 22:03

'I think it is sort of meant to even society out.'

It was actually meant as a means to sort ouf the complete disaster that was right to buy and subsequent rise in homelessness and huge wait lists for subsidised housing to rent.

hughjarssss · 20/09/2008 22:04

My brother is a builder and he told me to never buy a house built by Barratt. Said the way they are built is shambolic at best. The builders on site are told to cut corners to get the job finished ASAP.

wotulookinat · 20/09/2008 22:05

Oh you know what I mean!

ShyBaby · 20/09/2008 22:07

I cant disagree with you hugh, ours was a house from hell.

We had no less that five gas leaks too.

I was actually relieved to move into the shit heap I have now.

Off subject I know!

ShyBaby · 20/09/2008 22:08

Twice ive said "that" and I meant "than"!

2shoes · 20/09/2008 22:11

hughjarssss your brother speaks the truth, dh is a painter and he hates working for barratts because they are cheap and nasty and they cut corners.

expatinscotland · 20/09/2008 22:12

but they never charge cheap prices to buyers .

muppetgirl · 20/09/2008 22:16

We live in a new housing estate and the parking is shite, the neighbours have their 3 adult children at home who play their music to all hours, smoke outside (throwing the butts everywhere so we have to clear them up else our children pick them up) and make much noise with their friends. Who are also extremely racist to a neighbour. We have 2 houses that have been converted to 6 bedrooms with each bedroom rented individually so each house has 6 cars to accommodate. No social housing just tosspots who can live anywhere.

ShyBaby · 20/09/2008 22:18

We were robbed! They flogged us the one bedroomed starter home when we could have easily bought the two bedroomed.

Wouldn't have been built any better though.

And then they opened up the public right of way to the wasteground behind. Hmmmm..I did wonder why they built a path leading to the fence. It all made sense after a while!

ShyBaby · 20/09/2008 22:29

Just thought I'd add. The chap who bought my lovely Barratt house is a landlord and rents it out to whoever.

We walked past it not so long ago and some great person had burnt the whole fence down. (I did feel quite sad).

AND ....Most of that street are now rented out. Some really dont take care of those once nice looking houses.

I'd go as far so say....my council house looks better.

Good thing im not a snob anymore

cloudydaze · 20/09/2008 22:32

I live in a wealthy part of London with neighbours who own their own homes & they are the neighbours from hell!!! Just because they own their own homes doesn't make them decent neighbours, trust me!!!

Oh dear, TBH you are more at risk from horrd neighbours if you live ina HA estate. Surely noone can deny that? Crime rate is higher and so it follows that people in the socio economic group that end up in HA are more likely to be anti social. Why is that such a dreadful thing to say? Obviously they're not the only people that are crime committing, noisey drug takers... or even worse have 'the biggest house in the village' syndrome like my parents next door neighbours.. where the 'lady' of the house snips at my Mothers flowers and looks down upon everyone.
But come on people if you had just struggles to buy your dream home and then found out that a drug dealer was given the same HA housing as you had, wouldn't you be pissed off?
May not be PC but she's (the OP) only human.

what a lovely up your own arse post. I cannot believe in this day and age people are still so thick, not all people who live in HA are drugs dealers. I actually do not know one who lives on my estate, yet there were load when we live in a private flat.

twinsetandpearls · 21/09/2008 09:59

Until I read this thread I had never seen barratts and dream house in the same sentance.

twinsetandpearls · 21/09/2008 10:15

But you have apologised and I hope you do not disappear. I have started loads of thread only to be told f* of you complete twat but am still here to tell the tale.

Peachy · 21/09/2008 10:18

'you are more at risk from horrd neighbours if you live ina HA estate'

she's right

When I lived in a HA house the neigbours were bloody awful- morris dancing, wife sharing, alcoholic twat

'course they owned their house but nonetheless

(and yes, of course it was the morris dancing that bothered us most- I mean, that's just wierd)

Peachy · 21/09/2008 10:20

(That wasnt to OP_ like twinset said she apologised ages OK, which is fair enough)

Tis a MN rite of passage to have a thread go tits up; might be why I've been here since day dot and not been listed as royalty- too nice a poster LOL

Firstly to the op this is not meant as a dig at you as you have very graciously apoligised so as far as Im concerned that is the end of the matter.

However it is aimed at the posters who are still coming on here and being very narrowminded.

I live in a ha house but up till a few months ago was private renting, my dp and I work hard, only claim tax credits and child benefit, and have great neighbours.

Yet when we were private renting we had the most awful neighbours!!!

So Im sorry it is about the people not whether they can afford their own home or not!!!!
