To want my family to pronounce ds2's name correctly?

FrannyandZooey · 02/09/2008 12:30

I am honestly not sure if I am. I feel like this is a big deal and want them to get it right, but they are all so convinced that their way is the right way, and it doesn't seem to matter what I say, that I am wondering...

It is a slightly unusual name that can be pronounced two ways. Not hard to say, at all.

If IANBU, how do I deal with this?

how would they react if you went to them and said that as nobody can pronounce it correctly, you are going to change his name and have him called Fred instead?

Tell them that it is really bothering you that your own families cannot be bothered to stick to the name that you chose. If they think that they can give him a better name that everyone agrees on, and everyone can pronounce, let them get on with it.

In the meantime, just carry on as you are, gently correcting them and trying very hard not to punch anyone

GColdtimer · 02/09/2008 12:42

OK, he is only 6 weeks old - then I think you have to just tell them gently that you understand that they think it might be Loo-see-un but it really isn't because it is actually a different name. You need to nip it in the bud now

desperatehousewifetoo · 02/09/2008 12:43

He'll correct them when he is old enough.

Saturn74 · 02/09/2008 12:44

Could you task DS1 with the job of politely correcting your family - a gentle correction may have more effect from a doting big brother?

seeker · 02/09/2008 12:44

Ah - sorry.

Trouble is, I have never in all my life heard this name pronounced any way other than Lu-ci-an. And I would find it really hard to get used to pronouncing it Looshan!

But I do think your family should try really hard.

However, I also think everyone else he meets all his life is going to say "Lu-ci-an" and you need to get some strategies ready to deal with it - sorry!

ElfOnTheTopShelf · 02/09/2008 12:45

I have the same issue. DD is Evelyn (Everlyn) but she gets it pronounced Eve Lyn.
From people who should know better!
Shes nearly 3 and still gets Eve Lyn.

moopdaloop · 02/09/2008 12:47

I think I probably would for a while, not consciously though. It takes a while to retrain your mouth to a new way of pronouncing words or using words even

I would pronounce it the way you do. We had a similar thing with ILs pronouncing DD's name 'differently' to us. I just said, "Actually, I prefer how we say it". She is Eleanor - we said, Ell-en-ah, they said Ell-e-NOR.

They caught on remarkably quickly and actually blamed DH for telling them this wrong pronunciation.

SoupDragon · 02/09/2008 12:48

I've never heard it pronounced like that before either but really, it's not difficult is it? I've never heard some of DSs friend's names pronounced before but I still manage to pronounce them correctly.

I'd probably only mispronounce it in my head when reading it (like I always pronounce the D in Django!) but saying it as the child's name? Not a problem.

Majeika · 02/09/2008 12:48

I think you are going to have to change his name. What was option B?

I pronounce it Loo-see-an too so I can see where your family are coming from.

Loo-shun - never heard of it.

Do you not like Loo-see-an? It is nice!

teafortwo · 02/09/2008 12:49

the s in my daughter's name is pronounced ssss my sister pronounces as a zzzzz sound - she told my Mum "I think it is really pathetic that you don't say your own Grandchild's name correctly!"

My Mum pronounces it properly - ssss.

My sister thinks she is the only one marching in time!!!!

Hey, Franny - Lets laugh about it!!!!

fryalot · 02/09/2008 12:49

ronaldinho - eh???? zoe? chloe?

what, do your family just rhyme everything???? They are nothing alike!!!

PuppyMonkey · 02/09/2008 12:49

Call a family meeting. Explain how you pronounce the name. Accept their argument that some people would say Lu-se- yun, but that your son is called Loo Shun. make them put 50p in a jar if the pronouce wrong...

Talking of Esme, which someone was earlier, that's my dd's name. We pronounce is Es-mee, but my big sis is an annoying cow who believes we are quite wrong and it should be prnounced Es-may. I don't like Es-may, so have told her we will be pronouncing it Es-mee thanks very much.

She is the only one in the family who still insists on doing it her way, and I know it's just to get a reaction from me and so she can direct me to XXX internet site that says how you should pronounce it Ez-may. I feel quite pleased with myself that I just ignore her and can see her stewing away quietly...

hecate · 02/09/2008 12:50

Well, I can't tell you on here, TMMS! But if you email me, and you promise to keep it to yourself I'll tell you both their names!

That being said, my Mum calls DD Ellie - even though she knows I don't like it. She quite rightly although I'll never admit it said that DD can correct her when she is old enough, if she doesn't like it.

Majeika · 02/09/2008 12:50

and I would say Eve Lyn not EVER-Lyn too!

LOL re Chloe not Zoe!!!!!

ElfOnTheTopShelf · 02/09/2008 12:54

I dont know anybody who pronounces it Eve Lyn and have only ever heard it as Everlyn.

I wish we'd put an R in her spelling

My MIL still says Eve Lyn. My FIL gives up and just calls her Evie. My cm used to call her Eve Lyn, despite me correcting her to begin with, but DH corrected one day and from then on, its been okay.

QuintessentialShadow · 02/09/2008 12:55

I thought there was Lu se an (Lucian) and Lu se en (Lucien - my sons middle name). Never heard it pronounced as Looshan.

Pinkjenny · 02/09/2008 12:56

Dd gets Alexis, Alexia, Alexi. I've often been pushed to the brink of sanity and shouted, 'IT'S ALEXA!!!!!'

seeker · 02/09/2008 12:56

I think we ought to keep this thread and revive it every time someone wants to call their baby a really really unusual name. If people can't manage Lucian and Esme, what hope have all the little Sequoias got?

DaisySteiner · 02/09/2008 12:56

One of my ILs calls ds3 by a completely different name entirely - it's not just a mispronunciation but a completely different name!

Ronaldinhio · 02/09/2008 12:58

Are you part of my family Daisy?

moopdaloop · 02/09/2008 12:58

I've never heard of looshun either now others have admitted to it

SoupDragon · 02/09/2008 13:00

Thing is, no matter whether you've heard it before, once you're told it shouldn't be difficult to remember what your grandson is called!
