To want my family to pronounce ds2's name correctly?

I am honestly not sure if I am. I feel like this is a big deal and want them to get it right, but they are all so convinced that their way is the right way, and it doesn't seem to matter what I say, that I am wondering...

It is a slightly unusual name that can be pronounced two ways. Not hard to say, at all.

If IANBU, how do I deal with this?

Tinkerbellesmum - if that's directed at me I pointed out that it might be an American pronunciation(and I don't even know if it is, only that the references used on here have all, until Slayerette's link, been American), but where did I say it was wrong? Or shouldn't be used?

At the end of the day from this thread it looks as if there are going to be a percentage of people who won't initially pronounce it in the way Franny intended - but there are gazillions of people in the same boat, so he won't be the only one!

belgo · 05/09/2008 16:51

yes I've heard it confused.

No, my comment was a general (friendly) dig at Americans more than anything - I used to live in Canada where they do a little more than friendly digs at America!

FWIW I think your sons name is lovely, you do not need to explain it to people, when they ask you his name, tell them, they may question it if they see it written down but if you tell people his name I doubt they would say anything. as for your family just tell them firmly that his name is pronounced Loo-shun and they'd better get used to it.

It also doesn't matter how anyone else pronounces their name, lots of people with the same name as me pronounce it a different way, that's their choice and their name - bugger what anyone else says!

I was thinking about this last night when my sister was watching X Factor. A lot of people say Louis and Lewis the same (Lewis) where Louis is actually Loo-ey. The same goes with Lucien and Lucian.

SoupDragon · 07/09/2008 14:13

A friend of mine has a Louis pronounced Lewis.

I am American, the only Lucian I have known pronounced it 'Lu-see-an'.. he was a surgeon AND although we lived in the USA, he wasn't American, off-hand I think he was French -- his son was called Jean Paul, said exactly like the Star Trek character.

So are you all going to start dissing the French on the basis they say Lucian "wrong", too?
