to keep a dvd that my 3 year old accidently stole from a supermarket today?

I was shopping at a major supermarket today and had agreed to let dd have a dvd for 5.99. She was holding it in the trolley.

Basically I forgot to give to the check out person to swipe so we didn't pay for it.
I only realised this after I had strapped my other 2 children in to the car and was lifting dd out of the trolley and saw it on her knee.
I didn't want to have to go all the way back in.
I feel a bit guilty, but then again I must have spent thousands of pounds at this shop over the years.

What do you think. AIBU to keep it? Is it stealing? Do I worry too much?

really?

Tortington · 13/08/2008 15:50

trashy romcom?

oh my dear lord ... i fear bree is right, we once had people who read real books

Earlybird · 13/08/2008 15:50

Have to say I'm absolutely amazed that so many people have posted here about stealing stuff - admit to it, feel justified in doing so, we've even got a bit of gloating....!

LittleMissBliss · 13/08/2008 15:51

that really as about my posts. i was joking on most parts. tong in cheak. Can you point out my posts that compare to Brees.

ipanemagirl · 13/08/2008 15:52

I don't think it's ever morally ideal to steal at all but I have a hard time thinking people who steal food when they can't afford to buy it are morally very wrong!
I think the optimum is to think it is wrong. But a lot of that depends on your upbringing. My mother is totally honest and would never keep anything she hadn't paid for. I'm glad she gave me a high standard. Now I do volunteer to pay if I think I've underpaid for something, but people are often very surprised if you do that!
It's so much how you were brought up I think.
My dh has a far less sensitive conscience than mine!

Bumdiddley · 13/08/2008 15:53

It's the thrill of not getting caught! I'm admitting it on a public anonymous site.

Will the world stop? Will anyone die? No.

HappyMummyOfOne · 13/08/2008 15:54

"I think modern morals are that if it was a little shop you should def go back and pay for it. But if it's one of the big 5 they've been ripping us off for years."

If they are modern morals, I must be quite old fashioned. It's never ok to steal, regardless of the size of the shop.

So you'd be fine with your children growing up stealing from large shops and would see nothing wrong with it?

Personally, I would have taken the kids back out of the car and taken the dvd back. Its not exactly a hardship to take children back out of the car.

expatinscotland · 13/08/2008 15:54

You got personal, LMB, in retaliation. That to me is pretty snidey.

Yes, I used to write trashy historical romance, purpleheaded warriors and the depths of womanhood and all. No nasties like syphillis, unwanted pregnancies or childbirth fever included.

Marne · 13/08/2008 15:55

I walked out of Fat Face the other week, looked down to dd in the buggy who had a pair of mens flip flops , i turned around and took them back, no one noticed, no alarms went off, but i dont think dh would have liked them

We have walked out with things before and noticed until a few shops latter.

Earlybird · 13/08/2008 15:55

Bumdiddley - has anyone ever stolen anything from you or your family? Would you care if they did?

LittleMissBliss · 13/08/2008 16:00

what by asking her if she was the real Bree? That was in shock to the post it on the vending machine! Some people are too good to be true. Then outlining how not so perfect the character was just amused me, i was bored it's raining and i can only read to my 9 month old so many times in a morning.
The swan thing is hardly shouting you f-ing c-nt at someone is it.

It is wrong to steal but i wold never shout theif. Because i am one. Like i said about the something for nothing thing. All be it a mars bar.

LittleMissBliss · 13/08/2008 16:02

By saying i'm a theif i don't steal but i have had something for free and not returned it. I think i even got extra change from a vending machine once, yup you guessed it i kept it.

DarrellRivers · 13/08/2008 16:04

Not taking the £5.99 DVD back is stealing and wrong
I work hard for my money and would be gutted if anyone decided to take something which belonged to me
I could concede a grey area if you maybe didn't pay for a grape that your toddler stole but not enough to fight over it

LittleMissBliss · 13/08/2008 16:05

I think Bree was getting personal early on. Then talking about the people on mumsnet now. Come on.

LittleMissBliss · 13/08/2008 16:08

I love how other well known mumsnetters stick up for other long timers even if they are out of order. Tis great.

BlackEyedDog · 13/08/2008 16:10

expat: 'think what Bree was trying to point out is that more and more folks cry foul and 'mean' and snobby and unfair and various other lazy adjectives whenever they encounter a ppoint of view they don't like.'

bollox.

Tortington · 13/08/2008 16:13

am liking that well thought out argument there BED
pmsl

expatinscotland · 13/08/2008 16:13

my point well-proven by your own post, blackeyeddog.

and yours as well, LMB, i'm sorry to have to write.

Tortington · 13/08/2008 16:16

here ye

here ye

this is the truth according to me ( so it must be right cos i say so)

both bree and LMB - and others could have used other ways of phrasing things.

but LMB dear, tis you who is harping on endlessly - move on.

its not her fault or yours - lots of people had a go during this debate get over it

IorekByrnison · 13/08/2008 16:21

This thread is even better than the one about the toddler/supermarket apple theft.

LittleMissBliss · 13/08/2008 16:24

sorry custardo i completley forgot that being here uder a year i only get my allocated amount of posts per thread.

enough with the 'dear' thankyou!

Quattrocento · 13/08/2008 16:25

LMB I am not an old-timer, and yet I happen to agree with Bree that stealing is wrong.

If you want to carry on justifying stealing, why don't you go and start a thread for you and the other self-confessed thieves.

laweaselmys · 13/08/2008 16:28

this is a ridiculous thread. I feel bad for the OP. She accidently stole something and has said she'll take it back and pay for it. Surely that means this topic is OVER.

LittleMissBliss · 13/08/2008 16:29

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH- I have never ever said once on this thread that i condone the actions of the OP for goodness sake. I have said that i would take back the dvd. I was just pulling up Bree on her shouty finger pointing theif thing. Because where do you draw the line that's why i posted up the double mars bar question.

[bangs head on keys. then flees before custardo can slap hands for extra post]

BlackEyedDog · 13/08/2008 16:32

" stealing is v bad. Put dvd BACK"

see? said without a sneer. tis possible after all
