to keep a dvd that my 3 year old accidently stole from a supermarket today?

goodomen · 12/08/2008 20:25

I was shopping at a major supermarket today and had agreed to let dd have a dvd for 5.99. She was holding it in the trolley.

Basically I forgot to give to the check out person to swipe so we didn't pay for it.
I only realised this after I had strapped my other 2 children in to the car and was lifting dd out of the trolley and saw it on her knee.
I didn't want to have to go all the way back in.
I feel a bit guilty, but then again I must have spent thousands of pounds at this shop over the years.

What do you think. AIBU to keep it? Is it stealing? Do I worry too much?

high five

DillyTanty · 12/08/2008 23:46

rofl at 'enjoy your dvd'...

sooooo, does that make it about four people out of hundreds who reckon it's okay to steal from a supermarket? hardly the end of MN/society as we know it. i think that our children will probably be okay...

susiecutiebananas · 12/08/2008 23:47

The accusations of snobbery didn't stem from thinking it was stealing ( indeed it was stealing )

It was the way it was said, I think?

"Posts like this give MN a bad name"
" This site is so very different from the site I joined 4 years ago. Let's just say, these days "all human life is here". "

Amongst others. I feel that it was these comments that were potentially offensive and caused the snobbish ( etc ) comments to ensue.

I could of cause be entirely wrong....

DillyTanty · 12/08/2008 23:49

"But then my defence of MN, when I get the bit between my teeth, is akin to other peoples campaigns.

Amnesty

Red Cross

Insert numerous charities....."

i think a common person might say 'you wot?' in response to this... what ON EARTH does that mean?

expatinscotland · 12/08/2008 23:50

'Amongst others. I feel that it was these comments that were potentially offensive and caused the snobbish ( etc ) comments to ensue. '

Why take it so personally, though?

It's one stranger's opinion. Big deal.

I don't know about you, but in my world there's so much more to get offended about than a website.

BreeVanderCampLGJ · 12/08/2008 23:50

Lavender

Did she just mention Lavenderrrrrrrrrrr

On that note I am deffo off to bed, having checked under the bed for pheasants.

expatinscotland · 12/08/2008 23:51

For example, coach drivers from Northern Ireland just piss me right off a lot.

Tortington · 12/08/2008 23:51

peasents are in the shed bree - as per

expatinscotland · 12/08/2008 23:52

Around here, pheasants are offensive bastards who can seriously fuck up your car.

Tortington · 12/08/2008 23:52

i'm watching you

expatinscotland · 12/08/2008 23:53

if it's not the sheep it's those pheasants.

the bastard gamekeepers who kill birds of prey to keep up the pheasant population so some twat with a three-inch cock can feel macho about shooting a few of them.

now i find that mega offensive.

TakeMeHome · 12/08/2008 23:54

"There have been several advertising campaigns that have attracted people better suited on other sites."

I don't get what people are not suited to MN (and who thinks they have the right to tell people where they are suited to !).
I, for one, am glad that "all human life is here".

Glad some of us are common !!

SparklyGothKat · 12/08/2008 23:54

yes it is stealing but its the way that Bree words her posts that come across as 'snobby'

what sites would be more suited to some posters then Bree? One with tickers and fluffy stuff? This is the WWW and we will get people from all walks of lives on here. A lot of people joined when we had the Gina Ford courtcase going on and it was all over news. At the end of the day we (and MNHQ) can't stop people joining.

frasersmummy · 12/08/2008 23:55

There have been several advertising campaigns that have attracted people better suited on other sites.

if you are out to offend its worked.

I am off... to threads where people can have a debate without being personally offensive no matter how long they have been here

I am sure that the mumsnet team would not agree with your comments

BreeVanderCampLGJ · 12/08/2008 23:55

Children are a precious gift. Teach them not to steal.

Right, I am going, going, gone.

expatinscotland · 12/08/2008 23:58

K, I sort of see Bree's point now.

I mean, how has she gotten personal and named names? YOU took it personally.

Running off to report posts to mods all the time, stuff like that, over really FA, IMO.

I mean, if someone gets that het up over some random stranger's post on this big huge website, I'd imagine they must go through real life constantly bent out of shape.

Seriously.

LookattheLottie · 12/08/2008 23:59

'However the amount of posters on here with loose or non existent morals, is deeply worrying and a scary snap shot of the world my DS has to grow up in.'

I have morals, I just have the odd slip up every now and then.

'This site is so very different from the site I joined 4 years ago. Let's just say, these days "all human life is here".'

Well all us new riff raff will all sod of then shall we lol, a little harsh, no? I have been on MN for nearly 2 years Bree, and I can honestly say it's stayed the flippin same! Sometimes it's nice, most of the time, it's......heated. Is there a points system for years you clock up on MN?

Look at this either way you want. I'm inclined to head in the least popular direction and say, to hell with it, you're only human, it's a mistake, forget about it, just be more careful with the kids when shopping. If that means I have no morals at all, well, that's just laughable. As for my 'theiving' 14mo dd, well I'm sure she'll be a tattoo covered, pot smoking, motorbike riding, junky jail bird by the time she's 3! And good riddens to her as well eh, don't want her kind of muck clogging up the school system and infecting every other child pmsl!

SparklyGothKat · 12/08/2008 23:59

BTW I am as common as muck!! My parents were working class, I am on benifits, I eat junk food (and sometimes so do my kids )
I have morals though, and do right by my kids, thats what matters at the end of the day.

Quattrocento · 12/08/2008 23:59

Hard though when they are embarking on a life of crime at three years old ...

Tortington · 13/08/2008 00:00

the anser to bree's link - i refer posters to my previous 'barf' link

Oh dear God.

What a wonderful selection of role models you posters are for the next generation.

Here is a NEWS FLASH

It is stealing

You could have called the store when you got home and asked them to debit your card, but no you would rather come on here and seek dubious approval for your theiving.

Posts like this give MN a bad name. "

too true, expat... too true...

cluttered · 13/08/2008 00:01

OK, a bit of a hijack but can people please give their opinions on what I should have done in the following situation:

About 5 years ago we were on holiday abroad when we were stopped at traffic lights and car behind crashed into us, damaging the rental car bumper and also several possessions in boot eg DP's PDA, glassware we had purchased etc. We were charged for excess by carhire company but luckily had taken out super CDW policy which refunds the excess so got that money back but were still out of pocket for our possessions. Had travel insurance but this too had excess plus lots deducted for wear and tear of PDA and other items damaged so were maybe £100 out of pocket.

About 2 years later noticed credit card had amount approx £200 credited to it which was unexpected. Rang up credit card company and was told it appeared to be from car rental company abroad but they didn't have more details. I had a bit of a search but couldn't find paperwork relating to accident or car rental.

So basically I did nothing further. I am about 99% sure that this money was from the excess we paid being refunded when insurance company of driver at fault sorted out claim. If the insurance company, car rental company and CDW provider had talked to each other and worked out I had been refunded twice and contacted me I would have returned money although I would have been out of pocket then owing to damaged possessions so am not sure if I would have had a case to claim for this?

Do feel a bit guilty for keeping money but am not even sure which company it was as we booked through one company (holiday autos?) and then had to go to a desk called something else and the name on credit card statement was something else again. Couldn't find my credit card statement relating to holiday to find exact date of original car rental transaction either. So my question is, in a similar situation how much legwork should you put in to return something you're not entitled to? Also, should I have given the money to charity to assuage my guilty conscience?

expatinscotland · 13/08/2008 00:01

I guess I'm 'common', too, about as common as a foreigner can be. Not that I give a flying fuck about anyone's 'class'.

But it's not cool when you see your kid has a DVD you didn't pay for and you're in the shop's car park not to go and take it back to the kiosk and just say, 'Sorry, she nicked this.' and move on. I mean, takes 5 minutes.

And then say, 'Oh, well, it's cool because I spend lots of money in there.'

Yeah, okay. That's fecking lazy, too.

SparklyGothKat · 13/08/2008 00:02

and and and.... I gave Callum a bit of a saugage roll the other day while he was in his pushchair!!!

susiecutiebananas · 13/08/2008 00:02

Oh Expat, I wasn't offended personally I was just offering explanation as a couple of people said they'd not read the whole thread thats all.

I rarely get offended by much on MN, i just flick to another thread. Unless i'm particularily p'd off with life and want a rant... actually, I don't think I ever do that either, just think it possibly.

Right now I am talking shit. I'm tired, its late. my dd has decided that she'd much rather be awake between 4am and 9.30 am than All night. Why/ how did this happen???????

Blame the holiday with my parents and DH who spoiled her rotten i every sense and have left me to get her back to normality... how do you explain to a 19month old why we can't go to the beach or sea at 5.30am? and no, not even after 'bekfas' OR 'pasta lunch' because we don't live near the blardy Sea!!!!
