Was waiting for a bus yesterday, while at bus stop I saw a mother, dd (approx age 4) and grandma come to bus stop, had seen them earlier walking down the street.

DD didnt want to go on the bus she was crying saying she wanted to stay with granny. Mother mentioned to granny than dd was tired - hadnt slept that day. Mother started to wind the child up eg "you ARE going on the bus"..."noooo mummy dont want to" ..."well you are so there!"

Petty back and forth argument which was frankly rediculas, dd tried to walk away from the bus stop, the mother turned it in to an almost game, mother was laughing and chasing her but shouting swear words at her and telling her she was going to "batter you when we get in" I was Then heard a whack, and looked round to see the mum hit the child 2x. Child started sobbing - from her point of view mum was chasing her laughing next min she was being hit)

Now hittings not to my taste, but I realise some people do this so I just tried to look away - small bus stop though so not really possible.

Child was then wingey (was being ignored by mum who only spoke to her to swear at her) Child then said "I am NOT goin on bus I want to go to grannys" (I though no fekking wonder) And the mother literally dragged dd by her arm along ground. DD fell to ground sobbing, mother grabbed her collar and lifted her up by it shouting and swearing and whacked her 5 more times.

At this point bus came, I told woman if she hit her dd in my sight once more id call police. (Now in retrospect I shouldnt have said that, I should have just called, but I was furious and not thinking straight) We got on same bus mother told me to "fucking go ahead then"...so I did. (mother was now dragging child up bus by arm, I dont mean pulling I mean literally dragging, then whacking her again when she wouldnt sit on seat.

Police car was sent right away but didnt arrive in time before she got off the bus I gave a description etc. But as she got off woman threatened to "batter my face in, if she hadnt got the child with her" (I felt like saying go on then, Id rather take the pain than a poor child, then you will go to prison, child will go to foster care and be better off)

I wish Id followed them, police didnt get them If I ever see them again will phone again.

If she does that in public wtf does she do at home.

i think frasersmummy was refering to the woman who abused the DD, not refering to KM the poster.

let me clarify

I thought earlier in the day that this thread had delcared itself judge and jury on a woman that only one person had seen acting badly for about 10 mins out of her life. Thats what i was complaining about.

I dont see bullying on mn (doesnt mean it doesnt happen) I have just been lucky enough not to see it or too thick skinned to notice maybe??

On a lighter note.. someone said earler about ignoring folk in case they are drunk... I can tell you I got dogs abuse for throwing up just outside a subway station when 3 months pregnant. A man in suit told me I was an old soak and his tax money was keeping me in drink.. and I should get a job.

A classic case if you are going to intervene be sure of your facts!!!

VinegarTits · 16/07/2008 20:01

From what the op described, i wouldnt call that womans behaviour 'acting badly' i would call it boardering on child abuse!

theres no excuse for hitting a 4 yr old half a dozen times for not wan to get on a bus. I think that is what most of the posters are trying to say here, having a bad day or not, there is no excuse for it.

Flame me all you like but that my opinion.

frasersmummy · 16/07/2008 20:11

och for goodness sake ..those 2 words were not used to restart an argument...

honestly I was just trying to re-assure scottish mummy that I wasnt accusing anyone of bullying

Hecate · 16/07/2008 20:11

I notice nobody is answering poor cory's question! I wonder why that is!

flubdub · 16/07/2008 20:30

I havnt read the whole thread, I cant possibly , theres just too much, but KerryMum - there are SO many of your posts that I have seen and disagreed with, and, tbh, I honestly think you post such ridiculous things on purpose.
You seriously believe that even if the mothers husband had left her, and she was depressed, and the child was a brat, that that is a 'get out of jail free' card to beat children?

flubdub · 16/07/2008 20:33

Hang on, read a few of the last posts, I DONT know whats been said, but I am in NO WAY picking on, or any such thing on KM, just disagreeing.
Again, I dont know whats been said yet, so that may not even make sense.
AM OFF TO READ ALL THREAD NOW!

CrazyMofo · 16/07/2008 21:11

The woman in question is a knobhead!!!!

It is CHILD ABUSE FFS

KM what planet are you on???

divastrop · 16/07/2008 21:12

'I applaud anyone who till take the time to stop and help someone in trouble '

yes,and the op did this by phoning the police as the little girl was in trouble.after all,she was the one being beaten and who needed help.

cory-i cant understand this either.certainly if a woman posted that her dh/p had done something like this to her there would be a resounding 'leave the bastard'.i cant even begin to imagine what the response would be if somebody posted that their oh had dragged, hit and sworn at their dd for not wanting to get on the bus, even if there was a 'defense' of 'but hes been really stressed, hes lost his job and he's suffering from depression and hes just found out his mum has been shagging his best mate for 10 years behind his dads back'.

there would still be uproar and 'leave the bastard' s because hes a man.

Hulababy · 16/07/2008 21:24

Thse thinking that OP was wrong to intervene...have you yet answered for other similar scenarios?

not mother and young child anymore....replace with:

  • woman hurling abuse at elderly mother/father and hitting them several times

  • husband hurling abuse at wife and hitting them several times

  • woman abuse at elderly husband and hitting them several times

  • father hurling abuse at child and hitting them several times

How would you feel in the above situations? Would your instinct still be to think "oh well xxx might have had a bad day, the yyy has probably been winding them up all day..." and accept it as being acceptable under the circumstances? Would you think calling the police was a massive over-reacition still?

Just curious...

And IMO the Op can never be held to blame for making the situation worse...the only person responsible for that is the mother who was hitting and swearing at her little girl.

ScottishMummy · 16/07/2008 21:38

completely agree! the same point has been made on previous posts.when we read see town centre violnce and hitting do we think

awww diddums
extenuating circumstances
lets not label
lets not jump to conclusion
maybe perpetrator had bad day

think not

flubdub · 16/07/2008 21:54

When I was on holiday many, many years ago, I think I was about 7, I saw a little girl who must of been about 5, getting sworn at and smacked in a car park. To this day 25 years later I still wonder what happened to her and where she is now.

Good on you, you did the right thing.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 16/07/2008 22:29

It's been really hard to absorb the posts on this thread because I've been reading it whilst eating a pot of jelly beans.

Fascinating and very insightful.

And, just to be really fucking annoying, it's vicious

LittleBoSheep · 16/07/2008 22:35

Yeah I noticed that too...but decided not to say anything

frasersmummy · 16/07/2008 22:42

I have to say worrying about a complete stranger for 25 years seems a little obsessive...

do you ever think in those 25 years she could have become a successful working mum...thanks to the sense of right and wrong instilled by a loving mother

ScottishMummy · 16/07/2008 22:53

she said wonder as in reflectively consider what events transpired. worry is different phenomena

i still wonder about primary school friends, does not mean i worry or obsess. obsession is a series of fixed thoughts that trouble one and are pervasive and intrusive

VeniVidiVickiQV · 16/07/2008 22:54

littlebo

It was eating away at me...

flubdub · 17/07/2008 09:01

Frasersmumy, she didnt say she was worried .

flubdub · 17/07/2008 09:01

Oh, sorry, was already said.

StealthPolarBear · 17/07/2008 19:34

i would love to know the answer, the question keeps getting asked
My husband hit me 4 or 5 times, swore at me and dragged me by the arm. His granny's dying, does this excuse it?

JenniPenni · 17/07/2008 22:16

Disgraceful behaviour.. some people do not deserve to be parents. That poor kid Treat a child with respect and they will respect you back.
