To be bloody delighted MAGA is dying

Just that really! 🥂

(for the record I’m not ultra left, would probably be a moderate Republican in the USA, but I cannot STAND the bully boys in MAGA and their hideous lack of accountability)

Delighted for the USA and it’s such a tonic to see everyone celebrating.

Because that person will need to make a lot of tracks to become President in two years time. This is a win based on gas price in the here and now.

That's not actually how the American system works. And that's a very simplistic analysis.

There will be an eager gaggle of Republicans who'd sell their granny to be the next Trump, the next party figurehead, but it's hard to see who that would be. JD Vance has all the charisma of a genital wart, Ted Cruz is allegedly despised as much by his own side as he is by the Dems, De Santis had a go last time and had to drop out early on as his people skills were woeful. Millions of people were spellbound by Trump, so even though lots might be eager to take over it's hard to see who could have that same sway.

I'd love to be happy but my concern is that the Democrats will squander this opportunity and double down on the woke bollocks that got them annihilated in the first place.

They have less than 2 years to decide on a candidate to unite the party and try to unite the country, a few names have been mentioned.
What I find about this situation is despite his appalling first term when his actions caused problems outside America, he was reelected in 2024, in 2026 his actions on the world stage are having a huge detrimental effect on Americans, eg fuel prices, and suddenly they start to turn on him!
The next 2 years will be very difficult for America, he is not likely to take this massive defeat graciously, he will try to side-line both houses to do crazy things.

It is good, but it's a bit depressing that it seems to be purely about prices going up. Harris lost in 2024 cos of inflation, and now Trump has lost due to inflation. It's true that he caused the inflation with his war, but a bit sad that this is what it takes to get people to reject the Trump regime when there are many other good reasons for doing so.

Actually the biggest swing was from women who didn't like sexism....

That's really encouraging if true. Not surprising as Trump was surprising woke in his first term, and only revealed his sexism in his second. Source pls.

Without Googling, name the Sultan of Essex.

What's your point?

Do they have a leader, in the sense that we do? One name that seems to be gaining traction is Jon Ossoff (pretty close I think) he is 39 and he is Jewish which with the current attitudes would be an interesting choice. Apparently Kamela Harris is likely to put herself forward.

Trump has so far failed to offer support to JD Vance who many saw a a shoo in to run in 2028.

MagpiesAndJays · Yesterday 19:07

Not going to pretend I am an expert on US politics, but speaking with my American colleagues today and hearing the joy and relief in their voices has been so uplifting. One in Iowa in particular, admitted that he was getting no work done because everyone was in party mode. I was asking him what next and he was confident that this is just the start, that there are at least 3 solid candidates for 2028. I hope the groundswell against hatred and chaos continues.

There's no such thing.

As Trump has spent a lot of time during the run up to the mid-terms commenting favourably on the 'ass' of many men, maybe a lot of men turned against him too. He has been sexist since before he first ran, golden rain etc. so why have the women just woken up to him?

user001236547 · Yesterday 19:10

There will be a primary where any dem can throw their hat in the ring for 2028 and whoever is left standing is the nominee. A good, bruising primary will be a very good thing for the Dems, imo.

itwasyourshowallalong · Yesterday 19:10

Is it becoming safer to assume that, as the Democrats have a majority in the Senate and the House, that even if slimer tries to run for president again he won’t be able to amend the constitution in order to achieve it?

Ratherhaveacupofteaandabiscuit · Yesterday 19:10

Oh happy day!
Looking forward to watching the rats desert the sinking ship.
Too little too late for the US in terms of their credibility with the rest of the world though. That's long gone and it's never coming back.

Trump's sexism and attitudes to women in general was clear before he even ran in 2016, it's nothing new!

My greatest fear too. As the French are finding out the world has as much to fear from the far left as we do from the far right. The left paved the way for Trump to win a second term it is up to them to provide a genuine alternative.

Ossoff definitely has the X-factor that you could see propelling him to heights. Great speaker too.

I hope Harris doesn't run again.

Harris lost because of Biden.

Should be amusing watching them tear each other to shreds, the finger-pointing, the denial of any culpability, the shifting of blame, the back-tracking, the lies about lies, and desperation to distance themselves from people they were cosying up to less than 24 hours ago for the sake of trying to save their own skins.

Seems like the US has finally woken up to the fact they are being governed by a criminal cartel of idiots, just a pity it's taken 10 years for what has always been obvious to dawn on so many.

Just what the democrats did 2 years ago?

It's the same cycle, the same people, the same arguments. USA is tearing itself apart because of attitudes like this, the polarisation.

It's fine. It might get ugly, but it needs to all get hashed out in the open.

@Shloopie Yes, agree, Ossoff certainly looks like a standout right now.

EverybodyLTB · Yesterday 19:24

I am loving the songs about gas prices, but of course it’s not gas prices in the simplest sense. The US is like 98% or something rural and agricultural, it’s a huge part of its GDP in terms of tangible real-life output, what people can see and feel in their homes and communities. Like as in, not something tech bros or finance bros are contributing towards the economy from some far away office, but just in terms of the sheer amount of people who relate to farming in some way. It’s such a huge part of life as soon as you set foot out of an American metropolis. Even some actual huge cities, farming is so close to it, especially in states like Texas. The gas prices going up 70% when they use thousands of gallons just to harvest and get the work done, plus the distances needed to be driven just by people in their normal day to day lives is huge. Then the cost of living on top of that, like in the UK, has had the knock on effect. The poorest people voted Trump previously, with some deluded hope he’d turn things around due to him supposedly being a financial Rottweiler, a big money man. Now they can see that he’s royally fucked them and not only that but the sense of betrayal in his enrichment of tech bros and oligarchs over them. They’re now in revenge mode. I still don’t think most of them are actually becoming democrats, but their loved up MAGA days are over, they now know they’ve been sold a lie by a maniac. It takes things to happen physically to people sometimes to get into their heads. I don’t think half of the people who voted against him still give two shits that he’s a rapist and abuser and everything else on top of that. It’s not a moral victory as Obama is making out, unfortunately.

Bonkers that Texas went blue.

Why? I think James talerico is a brilliant candidate and I'm glad he was voted in I think he will be good for Texas. Well due a change from the criminal Paxton.

That’s the thing @InterIgnisvoters are very fickle. Should Trump sort the Iran shitshow and gas prices drop there is no guarantee of a Democratic President win. Don’t get me wrong, I’m as pleased as punch Trump’s got a black eye in the mid-terms especially in hard core Rep states.

more than that if Iran had folded and there was every chance the Republicans would have swept the board yesterday.

its always, always, the economy.
